442 And Steve L Interview

Apologies if this has been posted already but....

I only buy 442 once a year (for the pre-season preview) but there is an article in the Sept 2004 issue (page 136) on City. In it, Steve L outlines, in pretty strong terms, why he believed it was time for a change of manager. Too many quotes to fully reproduce but some of the following might produce some comment:

"Last season, the division was there to be won, we had the squad to do it and we had brought in players to strengthen the team. Having not succeeded, there was annoyance and upset"

"You go through three different emotions - as a fan you are very very disappointed; then you try to be philosophical...and then you get downright angry because there was a golden opportunity missed and the consequences are quite severe"

"We had to look at expenditure and trim as much as we could without killing off the opportunity to do well this season. That was when the friction started to arise between Danny and myself. I was going to make some tough decisions that he wasn't going to like. I didn't want that situation to arise so I just felt we ought to start again"

Then Tins talks about us being more of an attacking force and how we have the players to do it and that "..the fans at Ashton Gate...appreciate attacking football". Oh, all right then, I admit it Brian, we prefer to see free-flowing football than not.

Finally, Steve is further quoted and says, about Tins, that he's not there to consolidate but "...we are looking to go up this year and that's his (Tins) instruction". He concludes by saying, "Missing promotion once is forgivable; missing it twice is unacceptable; third time - lets just go and do it". No pressure there then Brian!

All in all, though it didn't tell me much more than I already knew, the article confirmed to me that Steve L is a fan first and Chairman second and that we shouldn't ever forget that we are fortunate to have him. And boy, does he want us to succeed, even if he resorts to misquoting Lady Bracknell. :)

Two other quickies about the issue - Dave L does a great job in previewing the season and refuse to answer the question about which player he'd most like shot of by saying "As long as they wear the red shirt with pride, they all have my full support". ...is the right answer Mr Lloyd. And secondly, the 442 end of season prediction for the top six is:

1. City

2. Hull

3. Swindon

4. Tranmere

5. Wednesday

6. Barnsley

which, apart from Hull and Tranny swopping, I can go with. So stick that where the sun don't shine, Sky!

Thanks Niall. When I wrote the article the two players who I might have mentioned had already left. No names, no pack drill, but they were both called Lee.

I can't remember anything else I wrote though. I'll have to go and buy a copy now to remind me what other rash predictions I've made.

When asked where you thought we'd be at the end of the season, you said 'promoted'. Very grown-up again, I'd have said 'Champions, of course'.

Its also worth buying for the Steve L quotes. My admiration for the bloke just goes up every time I learn more about him.

I recently saw last seasons 442 predictions and the same David Lloyd predicted that City would be promoted....so I wouldn't put too much faith in Dave's predictions this season.

That said, the law of averages says that he's got to be right eventually!

This season it is then.

But what you fail to understand is that I was right last season. It was City who got it wrong :)

I really did believe we'd go up last year - and we should have done. I'm even more confident this year. Let's hope I'm right.

I wrote the article for 442 on City (though haven't seen the printed version yet - must buy one on the way home tonight!).

It doesn't contain any 'revelations' but I hope it accurately reflects the passion Steve L feels for the club, and the positive vibe that is building at AG again.

Nope, no 'revelations' but quite rightly conveys Steve's commitment to the cause. Good work Martyn....
