I think more happened than just 5 goals! ??. Always odd highlight reels these!

Trying to watch the goal highlights but links going to Sky Sports come up "unsuscribed location"

Will probably have to wait until tomorrow when the club adds it on.

Great win though. Sounds like it was a cracking match.

It is a bit weird as just watched the Chelsea and Liverpool goals 2-2 on Foxtel.

Looking at the 2 goals, and there are better people to pick them apart than me.
First , I think Vyner isn't too much at fault, the guy hits the cross fairly early and Vyner could not afford to dive in. The 2 CBs are too far across IMO. Good movement by Bradshaw and Afobe, both on their man's blindside. I would like Kalas & Towler to be in a position to see the man and cross, but you can't always be in the perfect position. That said Towler should do a bit better and try harder to get himself there. Allows the striker to get a run oh him. Didn't really mark the man or attack the ball. Brilliant cross all the same.

I did say at the time, I'd like to see the keeper come, but that may be a little harsh.

2nd Goal
Lovely ball into space and we all know Afobe's power and pace. Towler had been left one on one with Afobe. I would have liked Towler to wait, take a chance on Afobe missing or being able to get back into a better position. Doubtful he was ever going to win that ball fairly. It did look as though he was getting back, rush of blood I guess, we've all been there, ball looks like it's there to win, but.....

I thought Towler had done pretty well, he needs to get up to speed quickly as it's a massive step up from the National League. Makes the choice for next week interesting. I wonder how close Cundy is, I wonder what the Medical advice on Baker is. Simpson could be given a try and allow Zak to step inside. Looking forward to see if we have some players returning, Williams possibly, King should be available I think. Be a good time to give Wells a run & Weimann a rest maybe. Who knows.

I think both Towler and Benarous play on Saturday in the cup match. Get yesterday out of the system in an unimportant match in the grand scheme of things. I don’t think you are being harsh on O’Leary at all. He has shown us he can deal with high balls and that ball was in the air a long time, as good as the cross was. He dealt with tougher situations than that cross very well yesterday such as the cross he held when getting battered by two players.

A question for people who have played centre-back.

As a keeper, then centre-forward, I was never coached in the art of being a centre -back. To those who have, are you taught to get in front of your attacker on crosses? I know as an attacker, on the majority of occasions I would try to get in front of the attacker - ball-side - with crosses.

Seems to me most of our goals come through the centre-backs being on the ‘wrong side’ of the attacker.

Thanks for the pictures, I described the goals on the NP thread and also thought Towler had done well up to then, experienced defenders get done the same, we have conceded many goals where a run has been made in behind Kalas or Baker. The problems was after the 2nd goal you could see the confidence of Towler and maybe team mates was shot and we did well to survive to half time. Towler looks a good player and will add to his learning experience.

I think the other thing to say it’s a result to some extent of the current risk reward we are happy with. We are getting more players forward and creating more chances. It also means when we misplace a pass (in this case I think it was Kalas for the first) then we are much easier to break on than before. Both goals came when we had a lot of players ahead of the ball. Towler is not the first defender in history to get caught by a good through ball to Afobe and find themselves one on one and losing out. It’s his bread and butter.

Against this the winner came when we had five in the box and another two just on its edge.

edit: to add extended highlights

I am not sure you can see it on the highlights, but both for the penalty and a couple of other occasions, Benik uses the fact that Towler is along side him rather just behind him. He gies shoulder to shoulder, knocking Towler off balance and using the impetus to gain a yard or 2 in the chase to the through ball. Excellent forward play.

For various reasons I haven't been on social media much, or had a chance to chat much about the game, but can anyone inform me why Atkinson wasn't playing?  Did Pearson honestly think an inexperienced 19-year-old deserved a chance because he'd trained better than Atko, or was Rob carrying an injury?

Depends on the situation.

If I was Kalas, I’d be thinking whether I could set a line rather than run back towards the area.  I don’t think he needs to much deeper than the next Lighter green shade of the pitch.  That gives Wallace less to hit. I’d probably be where Kalas was (on my left shoulder) albeit I’d be tighter on Afobe than he was.

As the move developed, it would need to be a brilliant cross to bee at Kalas and find Afobe.

The question to be asked is whether I’m (Kalas) comfortable Towler has Bradshaw.

It looks ok in this shot.

As we progress:

Just before the cross, you can just make out Bradshaw.

Heres the point of the cross:

Kalas has just dropped deeper than Towler, otherwise Bradshaw is offside!  We don’t get the camera angle to see if he was though.  He might’ve been.  If Kalas stayed a yard higher, both strikers are offside.

The speculation, and it’s very much speculation from me is that he’s suffering from his bout of covid.

I hadn't seen that he'd had COVID, or forgotten it. He hasn't looked the player he was a few months ago. I did wonder if he'd played Towler for pace.
