Bristol City convinced up to seven more Championship clubs face points deductions for FFP breaches

Middlesbrough and Stoke also face severe scrutiny as Covid-inflicted collapse in transfer values makes it impossible to offset FFP losses

Up to seven Championship clubs are feared to be heading towards financial fair play breaches, as pressure grows on the Football League to agree new force majeure Covid allowances.

Bristol City, who last month became the first club to admit they may be forced to take a points deduction next year, are now convinced they will not be alone.

With the transfer market remaining depressed during the January window, Middlesbrough and Stoke are among other clubs facing intense scrutiny as the EFL enters the next 12 months of its three-year "profit and sustainability" cycle.

"I'd have thought there will five, six, seven in our league in a similar position as we are and there will be others that are struggling," Jon Lansdown, City's chairman, now believes.

Richard Gould, the club's chief executive, told Telegraph Sport last month how the Covid-inflicted collapse in transfer values in the second tier cost the club £30 milllion alone.

Under the ownership of the Lansdown family, the West Country club has long been perceived as one of the most financially-stable regimes below the Premier League.

Overspending at Ashton Gate will be eased slightly next season by a new club record sponsorship deal. Ecommerce firm Huboo will now feature on the shirts of all the Bristol Sport teams - City's men and women sides, Bristol Bears rugby and Bristol Flyers basketball.

For City, the decision to part with MansionBet could prove wise ahead of the Government's gambling bill white paper, which could ban betting sponsors on shirts.

Another option for City is to secure naming rights at Ashton Gate for the first time, but, while the club continues to lose £412,000 a week, the introduction of new controls, such as a soft salary cap, and a recovery in transfer values appears most urgent.

"I'd like to think that Bristol City is looked at as a very stable, well run football club, locally-owned, with sensible actions," Lansdown, whose billionaire father Stephen owns the club, added. "We've all got slightly different models but you can see our track record that we use the transfer market  so we can have a slightly higher wage than a club of our size would normally have."

Is anyone going to ask Gould how he justifies the £30m claim? Looks like a hypothetical extrapolation from past sales to me.

If not, exactly which players would we have raised an aggregate £30m from bearing in mind that Semenyo and Scott didn't have the profile they have now and we tried to offload Massengo to Brum?

It is exactly that, I had it confirmed when it was first covered.

There are many threads on FFP and calculations relating thereto. I've not had the time to look into all of this recently, from our point of view nor indeed as it relates to any other club. Is it not so that our net loss over the last 3 financial years is around - £37.5 M? Is that no within the £39M for 3 years? Hope you can answer Dave, as I know that you do spend a lot of time on this point. I don't need detail, just whether that is broadly correct, notwithstanding recent announcements & hysteria:

2018-2019 Profit: £10.95

2019-202 Loss: £10.07

2020-2-21 Loss: £38.40

Are we the only club in the championship to release our figures

No- also see Birmingham (via HKSE), Blackburn (via Venkys London Limited), Millwall and QPR.

Plus Brentford and Norwich who went up last season and Wycombe who were relegated last season.

Of those we appear to be comfortably the worst placed so far- although of those who may have an issue, we are the only ones to release. Still some devil in detail with Birmingham and perhaps Blackburn.

Derby and Reading already punished for the period to 2021 but no accounts yet but we can extrapolate perhaps.

Yep, that policy worked last Spring, with Scott and Conway.

Really need to have a proper look at Cundy and perhaps Idehen as well if we are serious about keeping him beyond the summer. We really need to move on Kalas as there is money to be made, albeit not huge, + only 1 year left for him. Either way, a full defensive rebuild is needed to freshen things up.

Assuming Cundy shows a semblance of being Champ material, then he’ll be on such a low wage, giving him and extra year is a no brainer!  Idehen, likewise, just 19, he isn’t gonna get a better opportunity than us at this point.

Worth saying as well that had Brentford not been promoted they would have been in trouble had they not had the Watkins and Benrhama sales. They bought to sell, and managed to get promoted despite it. In a way they gambled and won.

They were more discerning than us in their purchases. Less scattergun, fewer £1-2m pound punts and expensive loans. But their strategy wasn't a million miles away from ours, and almost could have gone the same way.

Possibly so although I think they might have had a year or 2 longer on us before a crunch came- with those sales but no promotion, they would have turned a profit. They also had a £20m+ profit as starting point in 2018/19- do tend to agree however although would Toney not have attracted a good few quid if necessary?

True. Canos would have brought them some cash as well. I'm not trying to sell them as being in exactly our position, they've been run far better. But we're not so different.
