Carey 6
Derrick Williams more deserving of a place than Cunningham. Can’t argue too much with the thread title though.

1960maaan
Tommy Doherty not good ???? Qualified as Irish, so ...... I liked Sproule too. Pretty slim picking though, looking through the list. Kevin Nugent was a surprise (Republic) https://www.worldfootball.net/teams/bristol-city/10/
Silvio Dante
Thinking about it a city Irish XI is the stuff of nightmares. GK - Gilmartin RB - Ryan McGivern LB - Cunningham (good, but nob) CB - ?? CB - ?? LM - O’Dowda RM - Sproule CM - Tommy Doc (he’d go mental in this company) CM - John Burns?? CF - Andy Smith CF - Andy Keogh (think he played on loan?) Bejaysus it’s bad

Bejaysus it’s bad John Burns, I had completely forgotten about him, he was absolute litter, couldn’t even work out what he was supposed to be good at, let alone see any evidence that he could actually do it. His signing was the first evidence to me that Pulis was actively trying to sabotage us, he came as part of the Jim Brennan deal, he was a makeweight I know but I would rather have had whatever Forest paid & nothing else, than him. Terrible player.

pongo88
You only have to have a grandparent who was Irish to play for Ireland, so quite a few City players could have qualified. Things have been a bit fluid over the years as Tony Cascarino played for Ireland even though he had no blood ties to the county. His mother had been adopted by someone who was Irish, so he played even though he didn’t qualify. Over the years there have been managers who didn’t check too rigorously about players backgrounds and if your granny had a next door neighbour who had a friend who was Irish you could play

The Republic are nowhere near the force they were in Big Jack’s plastic Irishman days but actually fielded a side recently with every single player born on the island of Ireland so difficult to criticise them for it these days.

Maybe off field things were what stopped this from happening. Great range of passing, tenacious, great touch, always had time on the ball.
