CanaryCouple Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Hi everyone, Norwich fan in peace. My wife and I are coming down to Bristol for our away match on Saturday 11th – we've been looking to come to Bristol for a while as we've heard it's a great city, and we're booked into a city-centre hotel from Thursday to Sunday. Primarily we're looking for a pub that'll be showing the rugby after the match – Wales v Scotland kicks off at 4.45, so the closer to the ground the better. Obviously it'd need to be away-fan-friendly, but it's just the two of us and we're very friendly types Any other recommendations for must-do, must-visit, must-eat or must-drink are gratefully received... although the cheaper/better-value the better, as we're certainly feeling the pinch like most people at the moment. Anyway, looking forward to a great weekend and a great match to boot – we certainly seem to like playing high-tempo and high-press under our new manager David Wagner, so you should certainly get chances! How are you finding life under Nigel Pearson? Does he still retain the majority of the fans' support? Cheers, Matt. 4 Quote

Hi Matt, Have a look at this thread, plenty of comments / suggestions on restaurants in city centre and around Bristol. Certainly a wide range of recommendations Enjoy Bristol , I’ll let other’s recommend a pub for the rugby! 1 Quote
Davefevs Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Suspect the rugby will be on in the Sports Bar at Ashton Gate, but going in there might be best judged depending on the result! 1 Quote

1960maaan Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 The ones close to the ground may not be the best idea, probably ok but just to be on the safe side. The only ones I can think of are Rising Sun, Coopers & the Sports bar which come under the above. Best bet IMO would be Head back to the Centre area or Clifton. Few tips here. https://www.westcountrygames.co.uk/watch-rugby-bristol/ https://www.designmynight.com/bristol/where-to-watch-the-six-nations-in-bristol Quote

CanaryCouple Posted February 6, 2023 Author Posted February 6, 2023 Many thanks for the replies, folks. We've booked in at Izakaya one night as we're keen on Japanese food, and we're planning to check out some craft beer places (Wiper & True, Small Bar, Left Handed Giant). Wife usually likes wearing her Norwich shirt to games, but might be more sensible to go incognito... I like the idea of the bar at the ground post-match. Most places we go people tend to be friendly, Norwich fans don't tend to make many enemies on their travels 7 Quote

Last time we were at Carrow Road we stayed in the hotel on one corner of the ground and ate at the Delia Smith restaurant up the other end of the ground! No need to leave Carrow Road at all - although not to do so would be a crime in a lovely City like Norwich. Quote

Shocked to hear that somebody from Norwich would be interested in watching the rugby. Back in 2007, me and @The turtletried unsuccessfully to find a decent bar to watch the Rugby World Cup final (yes the final, with England in it) after we'd played at Carrow Road. The only place we could find was some random bar, where the vast majority of the customers were dancing the night away while about ten of us stood watching the rugby (with no sound). My only conclusion from this was that the nice folk of Norwich had no time for rugby! 1 Quote

My only conclusion from this was that the nice folk of Norwich had no time for rugby! We're not a big rugby city, it's true. Plenty of pubs will show the Six Nations, but very hard to find anywhere that'll show domestic games (we're Harlequins fans). We went to Japan in 2019 and we're off to France later in the year, but don't have many rugby-following mates up this way, sadly. North Walsham (about 10 miles north of Norwich) has a half-decent team, but nothing compared to the West Country heartlands. We'll have to try and come back for a Quins game down this way. Quote

Most places we go people tend to be friendly, Norwich fans don't tend to make many enemies on their travels If you’re looking for real ale pubs (aka craft beer) after watching the rugby in more sports orientated bar there are lots of great choices all around the Harbourside area to check out. The Golden Guinea and nearby Ostrich Inn at Bathurst Basin (300 yds from St Mary Redcliffe church, towards Ashton) are both great pubs. The Shakespeare on the Waterfront, adjacent to the Arnolfini arts place, is another very central great pub. Just off the Centre, in Denmark St is The Smoke and Mirrors pub, which is a pub which does magician shows (no, it is good!) and they have people doing tricks in the bar if you don’t want to pay to watch a show. The Christmas Steps pub - at the bottom of….Christmas Steps, is another pub full of character as is the walk up the steps to….Zerodegrees micro brewery (proper craft, not ale) who also do good food. King St is the major area for lots of bars, the Beer Emporium is downstairs and has a huge range of beers. I’d avoid the Small Bar opposite as it charges pint prices for 2/3rds glasses! Oh and King St Brewhouse is good as is the Llandoger arrow opposite. That’s probably enough for your first day, someone else can advise for the rest of your trip . 2 1 Quote
underhanded Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 I'd recommend Bristol beer Factory for a post-game pint. They've just opened up their back room, and its an impressive setup for watching sport. If I was an away fan who wanted a sports pub near the ground, that'd be my best best 1 Quote

Five minute walk from Cabot Circus on Wilson Street and from there it's not far to a great restaurant "Caribbean Croft", especially if you like rum to go with your food as they have loads. Most places we go people tend to be friendly, Norwich fans don't tend to make many enemies on their travels Re: Left Handed Giant, I'd recommend getting the Bristol Ferry (if during the day) as one of the stops is opposite the LHG and you can walk over the bridge. The ferry is a great way of getting around and seeing the site, especially if you come down by train to Temple Meads or are staying in the centre, have fun! https://www.bristolferry.com/waterbus/ Quote

Oh Louie louie Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Twice in pubs up North ive been asked if I'm from Norwich, the accent must sound similar up north, pull off the accent your golden around bemmy cc Quote

I can see the similarity to the untrained ear, but there's a huge difference to a 'loocal'! 3 Quote

If you are supporting the reds at Rugby, I could lend you a shirt and scarf. But we'll probably not do any better than last weekend against those things from the island west of Wales. Quote
Oh Louie louie Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 There is a similar burr to the accent to the untrained ear I agree, I was going to ask the bloke with lufc tattooed on his forehead how he did at geography at school but I decided against it 1 Quote

Spent a fantastic long weekend there with some mates last year. Particularly liked the Kings Head in Magdalen Street as not only did they have lots of interesting ales, but the staff and locals were great VFM. Though, as@CanaryCouple will doubtless be able to tell you, Norwich is full of decent boozers, many of them with very interesting histories. We all booked to do a repeat visit this year. Quote

Hard to pick a favourite Bristol Craft Beer brewery but it is right up there. Moor beer is a great one, too. 1 Quote
weepywall Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 If you fancy a proper cider, go to the Barley Mow in Bedminster, Cheddar Valley cider( strong and local) is £2.60 a pint, no need to worry about wearing a Norwich shirt in there, most of the locals can't see further than their own nose. 2 Quote

Not easy to spot squeezed in amongst the new buildings but another fantastic pub. It used to be the ‘tap’ room for Courages when it was brewing on the site that is now LHG. The Kings Arms around the corner is another unique type of pub with its seating arrangement. The Cornubia is a great pub , get some interesting characters in their. Quote

Scrumpty Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 If you’re on a budget, then the Mardyke might be the place for you. It’s on the way back to town and I promise it’ll be an experience you’ll never forget. ps. If you’re not an experienced cider drinker, I’d suggest giving Cheddar Valley a wide berth. Try a half perhaps, but venture beyond that at your peril Quote

Few years ago mite have been different, but against Norwich! I don’t think so. Safe as houses with yer missus. AG is a peaceful ground nowadays. Enjoy Brizzle. No bother from fans of course, it wouldn’t surprise me if the stewards had a blanket ban on away fans post game though. Quote

I know you've had a million recommendations but Merchants Arms in Hotwells does great beer and will probs have the rugby on. Cosy, real pub and away fan friendly 4:45 ko might be a stretch post match. My recommendation would be the sports bar at AG. The chap and his wife will be fine however I would just bring a non football top in a bag to remove all doubt as they will be in Briz for four days I suspect Mrs Canary will have one. @CanaryCouple Edited February 6, 2023 by REDOXO 1 Quote

Definitely makes sense to watch it at the ground, so we'll miss as little of the match as possible. Although if you guys get your wish, we might as well knock it on the head at half-time and go and watch the end of the Ireland-France game... 2 Quote

The Fat Cat Brewery has three pubs around the city and frequently wins CAMRA national awards. Look forward to seeing how many of your fine tipples and ale houses we can squeeze into three days.
