Mr Popodopolous
Good though! Good. https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/bristol-city-mark-sykes-ban-8308087 Dunno if it's already in the Sykes thread. In some ways it's pertinent there, in some ways it's valid in itself as a standalone topic. Edited March 31 by Mr Popodopolous

To be honest, the standard of officiating is so bad that the clubs need to band together to get these complaints heard and a solution found. It's absolutely abysmal that so many incompetent fools are promoted beyond their abilities to the professional game, but the lack of talent available is the key aspect. Former players should be encouraged into reffing. Refereeing individuality should be removed and the laws should be adhered to strictly and consistently. That's the only way you get this right. No more "letting the game flow" or nonsense about an early red ruining the game- a red is a red, minute one or minute 90. I reffed plenty of games when I coached, and it is hard but with professional levels of fitness and a team of assistants there's really no excuse for how bad it's got. Andy Davies was a former player don’t forget…

I recall in 2020 late 2020 there was talk of numerous Championship clubs jointly lodging a complaint about the standard but...nothing much since. However there seem to be some very different criteria applied to us in any event.
maxjak
It has to be the right thing to do. When players are being banned for 4 games, when their offence is just mere petulance, in comparison to some of the leg breaking/career threatening tackles that have taken place, only to be disregarded, and receive no punishment? Which then sends out an appalling message to player's, manager's and supporter's? Attention MUST be drawn to this.....if ever standards are to be improved. Officials and referees should be mature and aware enough to take constructive criticism onboard, and realise that they have a duty to be fair and consistent. That is all that managers are requesting, which seems to me, more than fair enough?
GrahamC
The inconsistency is the issue. Pearson rightly points out that Joe Bennett clearly did the same thing as Sykes against Joe Williams & nothing happened. The tackle on Williams by Norwood of Sheff U was an absolute shocker but again nothing happened. It was patently obvious when we played Huddersfield that Warnock had sent them out to kick us off the park, Hogg repeatedly fouled Scott, Pearson kicked Matty James (another player deliberately trod on the back of his leg) again, nothing happened. If the FA had applied the same standard with Sykes it would be wrong but at least consistent.
