shahanshahan
England v Australia International Friendly/the Alzheimer's Society International (the men's teams will have a corresponding friendly later in the year) KO 7:45pm Live on ITV4 from 7pm On my way to the game! First visit to the (ahem) Gtech Community Stadium. I've been to Griffin Park before. This may be the smallest ground I've ever seen the Lionesses play in This is the first meeting between England and Australia since October 2018, a 1-1 draw in a friendly match at Craven Cottage. Team GB did face Australia in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but lost in the quarter finals. VAR & goal line technology will not be in use for the match. ● Australia are winless in their two away games in England against the Lionesses (D1 L1), with their one defeat coming back in September 2003 at Burnley's Turf Moor, losing 1-0 to a Rachel Yankey goal. ● England are unbeaten in all 30 of their matches under Sarina Wiegman (W25 D5), conceding just ten goals across those games and keeping 20 clean sheets. ● Australia suffered a 1-0 defeat to Scotland in their last match – the Matildas last suffered consecutive defeats in September 2022, losing twice to Canada. ● England have conceded in each of their last three games – they haven’t failed to keep a clean sheet in four consecutive games since between July and October 2019 under Phil Neville (five in a row). ● After failing to score in their 1-0 defeat to Scotland in their last game, Australia are looking to avoid going goalless in consecutive matches for the first time since July 2021. ● England have only failed to score in one of their last 22 matches, a goalless draw with Czech Republic in October 2022. ● Only Beth Mead (21) has scored more goals for England under Sarina Wiegman than Ella Toone (15), who netted the Lionesses’ goal against Brazil in the Finalissima last Thursday. Head to head The Lionesses have met Australia on four previous occasions, with England enjoying three wins and one draw against the Matildas. The first game came back in September 2003, when it ended in a 1-0 win for Hope Powell's Lionesses at Burnley's Turf Moor, with Rachel Yankey scoring the winner. England 1-1 Australia, 9 October 2018, Fulham FC A Fran Kirby goal saw England settle for a draw at Craven Cottage in a friendly match. Kirby opened the scoring in the first half, but the Aussies hit back with a late equaliser from Claire Polkinghorne. England 1-0 Australia, 27 October 2015, Yongchuan, China The nations met in the final game of the Dewellbon Cup in China, when a goal from Izzy Christiansen settled the match in England's favour. England 3-0 Australia, 6 March 2015, Nicosia, Cyprus A hat-trick from Jodie Taylor helped the Lionesses enjoy a comfortable win in the 2015 edition of the Cyprus Cup, as (former Bristol Academy coach} Mark Sampson's side prepared for their 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup campaign. RoystonFoote'snephew
I imagine Chelsea's Sam Kerr will play for the Matildas tonight (she sat on the Bench against Scotland). Pity it's at such a small ground.

Probably saw that Abi Harrison wasn't in the Scotland squad & didn't fancy a contest I've never seen Kerr play live before (she joined Chelsea in the season that (WSL) games were still behind closed doors). Slacker
Real shame that this game is clashing with the Champions league games.I love watching the Lionesses but I think I will go for the Man City game.Hopefully I will be able to catch up with this somewhere tomorrow. Silvio Dante
Watching this now - no BT sport! England poor, really bad defending by Williamson to let Kerr in for the goal. Certainly a gulf between Belgium at AG and Australia in terms of quality. As mentioned in the original post, this game is being played in support of the Alzheimer’s society. If you’re watching, you may notice some of the shirts don’t have names - this isn’t a Tottenham 87 mistake, but intentional. The shirts (and players with no names will swap to named shirts at half time and vice versa) are intended to highlight one of the effects of Alzheimer’s in that names can be forgotten or sufferers can be confused. All will be auctioned off post game. A great gesture to raise awareness.

Poor goal to concede, although if there was VAR would have been pinged as clearly offside. Not undeserved though.

RoystonFoote'snephew
2-0 to the Matildas who are looking comfortable. Looking like the Lionesses first loss under Wiegman will be tonight.
MelksRed
Lionesses genuinely look disinterested.

Northern Red
I for one blame Gareth Southgate.
RoystonFoote'snephew
Lionesses not on it tonight and beaten fair and square. Only a friendly but work to be done if we hope to lift the World Cup. Australia successfully stopped Walsh from influencing the game (as did Brazil the other day) and England have to find a way of coping with that as it is likely to be a common game plan used by the top sides against us. Admin phantom Posted April 11, 2023 Admin Report Share Posted April 11, 2023 England haven't been that flat in a performance in years Too many players off their game, the usually reliable spine of Williamson, Stanway and Walsh all made too many unforced errors Needed more subs and much earlier changes, fortunately this sort of performance was tonight and not in the summer
Midlands Robin
I expect this will be written in a number of places and no one likes to see them lose but getting a reminder that they aren't unbeatable may prove a help as it will focus a few minds. You often learn more from your mistakes.
shahanshahan
(Apologies for delayed post, I haven't been on OTIB since Tuesday) Disappointing to see that result. 30 game unbeaten streak over. People say it's better to lose before the World Cup starts than during it, so there's that. First 2-0 loss I've seen at Brentford since City lost at Griffin Park in April 2017! More photos below from the night. Brentford (or Gtech) Community Stadium is nice. Luckily I was sat where there was no rain...
