This is invaluable intel, no joke. I'm 6"7, so leg room is pretty important. That said, I'd love to be in a standing area if there is more of an active stand

Don't worry BK, even littl'uns like you are warmly welcomed.

If we should ever have a floodlight failure, would you mind standing in one of the corners with a headtorch?

Hey folks, apologies if this isn't the right place to post this, I'm new on here. I'm a Kiwi lad who is moving to Bristol in 6 months time and really want to immerse myself in the Bristol football and get along to as many local games as I can (City games that is, Joey Barton being in charge of the other lot was all I needed to tell me not to go up there). I'm a massive footy fan, but coming from a country with one pro club, there's a lot of things I've read and heard which are a bit unknown to me. Just looking for any advice on how to get tickets, where fans congregate before games, etc. Again, sorry if this sort of thing has been covered ad nauseam already on other threads. Cheers if anyone can help me out! From a freshly minted Robins fan.

Welcome to the rollercoaster ride that is Bristol City, hope you have many years of lows, mixed in with a few highs!

We need someone to start the singing off so perhaps we could get some sort of Bristol city Hakka going to help with the atmosphere .

away games are good it goes like this

train station much earlier than you need to be - ( if there not on strike )

loads of cider for the trip

stone island clothing

a cap

arrive at away city train station

nearest Wetherspoon - more cider

escourted to the ground by local plod

some pavement dancing with the homes fans before you go into the ground ( you will soon learn the steps and arm movements )

watch match usually annoying other city fans whilst staring at home fans

game over

on train more cider annoy a few - sleep

arrive back at Parson street - you will get the jist.

we have all done it - enjoy the ride

ONE TEAM IN BRISTOL - you reddzzz

Hi BigKiwi,

Welcome! Wear red and you will have friends.

Will this be your first visit to Bristol? And come to that, do you know where you will be living once you arrive? Forgive me probing but it would be useful to know in terms of overall understanding. Although you're right to make football the centre of the universe, Bristol has a lot of other things to offer.

Yes, my first visit. My partner and I were looking to live in the UK for a couple years and we heard a lot of great things about Bristol. We currently have no clue what area of Bristol we want to live in though, so would appreciate any advice anyone can give. We're in our mid twenties, and definitely keen to hear about things in bristol aside from football - the misso only comes to footy games occasionally for the overpriced mini donuts at Wellington stadium, so the love of football isn't unanimous for us!

Try and plan an away game, they really are the best games for atmosphere and a togetherness amongst our fans and surprisingly little moaning compared to home games. I think this is similar to most clubs to be fair.

That's something I'm really keen to do. Away trips for me so far would mean booking return flights to a country 3 and a half hours away, so needless to say I haven't been on one yet. Sounds mean as though, would love an away day.

it has a good music scene, art etc. Perhaps start a thread in general chat for that kind of advice?

In that case then, it will be best if you give it a little time to get yourselves sorted when you arrive. Once you have a roof over your heads you can let us know and we'll give you the grand tour - or explain the eternal verities of life in Ashton Gate. Oh, and you realise you've set a challenge to make your missus part of the family.

Where to live ? Bristol has some brilliant areas, but all comes down to budget.
As has been said , probably one for "General chat"

https://www.otib.co.uk/forum/23-general-chat/

But allow for the amazingly slow moving traffic in Bristol . Public transport is, umm variable and if you intend to drive (which I advise not to if you intend to watch City , you will need beer) , as an example. I drive to night matches, sometimes I have done Fishponds (where I live) to where I park in 20/25 minutes. At other times it has been nearer an hour.

Bristol is an amazing City to live. Location will probably easily depend on your affordability etc. Bedminster/Southville (so near Ashton Gate) is fairly expensive these days but it’s great and easily walkable to the centre.

Clifton/Redland are probably the nicest parts but very expensive.

Horfield (Where Gas ‘play’) is great despite the local stain in blue and white. Gloucester Road runs down from Horfield into the centre and is packed with bars/restaurants etc and is my favourite part of the City. I live in Horfield and can attest that it’s not swamped in Gas these days.

East Bristol is a bit more affordable generally but big disadvantage of having no train link really, which given the traffic would be a bit of an issue for me.

Bristol City wise…just try and the various pubs etc around the ground. Feel free to say hi for a beer when you eventually make it over! Happy to answer any other pre questions you might have!

Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the posts, they've been helpful. If you see a lanky New Zealander at Ashton Gate looking confused in six months, it's probably me. Looking forward to meeting some of ya!

You might find it useful listening to The Wurzels before you get here.

For authenticity pre-match get down the orchard for proper West Country cider and a traditional ciderhouse. The West Country is the spiritual home of cider and it’s a real art down here. It’s a constant theme in a lot of the greatest poets and musicians work from the South West. Just go careful if it’s your first time, bends your legs. If not there’s the three lions, which is old school Bristol City personified in a pub. El Rincón is also a fun place very near the ground which is a little Spanish nook that has been adapted into our fan culture. Try different things pre-match and you’ll find your ‘place’ and favourite routine. Most of us do the same thing and visit the same places before every home game, it’s part of the day and often much more enjoyable than the football itself. Lots of suggestions for the fan zone, it’s okay but very family orientated, pints are flat and expensive. not quite the authentic experience you can get away from the now quite commercialised (but lovely) ground. If you are going solo get into a pub, perch at the bar and strike up conversation, people will be friendly and interested in your story. Depends what you’re into though and the vibe you prefer.

If you’re priced out of Clifton and Redland for somewhere to live, I’d recommend somewhere near Gloucester Road (as has been mentioned). The section from the Zetland Road junction to Ashley Down Road junction is packed with bars / pubs and shops. (Have a look on Google maps to see)  It’s reputedly the longest stretch of independent shops in the UK.  The areas near there are Horfield, Bishopston, Ashley Down.
