Leeds United at home match thread

Thanks Jerseybean.
Its a bit unclear but I think the second programme is the one from September 1955 the season after our winning of Div 3 South with a record number of points.

I remember it very clearly. A big crowd over 30,000 and a City team who had started the season so well. The result was a 0-1 defeat which seems to be a regular loss since then.

The major reason I remember it was that Leeds had at centre half, the very great Welsh international John Charles. That day he was at centre half but also was real quality at centre forward. He snuffed out Atyeo and Jimmy Rogers who had scored 53 goals in the previous season.

Charles moved to Italy and became a legend for Juventus at a time when players rarely moved abroad. At the end of his life he was visiting Turin when he became very ill. Juventus hired a hospital plane to take him home to Leeds where he died a short time after, because he was such a well thought of former player. I rate as one of the greatest players that I have seen playing live and that includes Matthew’s, Best, Di Stefano, Eusebio and Puskas.

We also lost at their place 2-1-that season.

I think we've got a better chance in this one than we've had for a while although it will be a difficult match for sure. They've lost some key players from last season and have a few injuries (as do our squad), but if we can continue to create chances like we have in the last few games we must be in with a shout, their fans are not particularly happy with their keeper Meslier and he has looked a bit shaky in Leeds matches I've watched on Sky, perhaps Nahki can get one of his scoring streaks going!

The club will remember at Saturday’s game against Leeds United the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

The players from both teams will come out of the tunnel earlier than normal ahead of kick-off for a small ceremony and period of silenced observed.

Please note that a minutes applause in memory of Theo John Manning will follow the remembrance ceremony.

We kindly ask that you take your seats by 12:15pm.

For me the overwhelming positive is that we come in to this game on the back of 4 points in a week when many thought we'd get nil.

Doesn't make it a free hit, but at least there isn't huge pressure to get a result.

Dress it up however we like, the reality is that the Leeds 1st 11 & wider squad is man for man better than ours.  We could play really well tomorrow & still get beat.

To end 3 games in a week with an early KO v Leeds is tough; they normally out run / over power us. I wouldn't be disappointed if Hogg shakes things up a bit to get fresh legs, & if he does this & we lose, I won't hold it against him. I'd be more frustrated if a virtually unchanged 11 puts in a leggy performance I think.

Could 4-2-3-1 become 4-3-2-1 tomorrow with McGuarn coming in to bolster midfield?

Not expecting much, & would be overjoyed with a point & a decent performance.

Game starts at 0-0…anything could happen…see Meslier at Sunderland.

Agree, don’t like the free-hit concept.  I’d be selling it as “6 unbeaten, couple of great results in the last 7 days against tough opposition, in tough circumstances, go out there are extend it to 7”.

The result will be whatever it will be, but Leeds have dropped points in 45% of games this season.

I gave up trying to predict how a game will go a very long time ago. However on paper Leeds are a stronger outfit but as we all know the match isn’t played on paper.

Strangely I don’t have any pre match inclinations about this game - probably means that it’ll be a draw…...:dunno:

As usual I look forward to an hour before kick off, one because I will be in the Pub but two to see the team sheet.
Usually an interesting option or two, this time it's mainly what happens with Williams absence .
Will we shuffle those involved at Stoke , or will McGuane get a long awaited run .
Of course there could be a surprise , but I doubt it . Wells must surely start , unless he is deemed tired (which I doubt) .
Leeds FB's seem to like to get forward , maybe swap Mehmeti for Yu and use his pace in behind .
What I do know is, the Pub opens at 10am and they should have City Poppy badges. Everything else is a mystery .
Would be nice to beat them for a change though.

A free hit! Who keeps saying that!

They didn’t get promoted last season and are not in the top two at the moment.

City as will be pointed out relentlessly by some podcasters and the odd journo are on a decent unbeaten run and have started taking chances. On top of that are now playing (it seems largely due to Mr Hogg) front foot attacking football. We could have had eight at Stoke.

I expect us to at least pick something up IF we don’t start either half with our effing slippers on. As seems the norm!

This doesn’t worry me:

“Recent form is horrendous!

Most recent on right. Leeds have 47 points from a possible 54

WWWWWWDWLWWDWWWWWW”

I’m worried when City play a team who are on a losing run, as you can guarantee City will go out of their way to help them stop than run. Let’s be positive and remember the match from ‘74. It is one of the best away days I’ve attended. For younger supporters, it was a bit crazy as the match was played during a period of a 3 day working week and various other actions to reduce electricity use due to a miners strike (most electricity was produced by coal powered power stations in those days.)  As a result, although a midweek match, it was an afternoon kick off, but there was a crowd of 40k +

Why would anyone be in a ‘spoons at 830am drinking beer.

Come to think of it, why go to a ‘spoons ever?

Why not?

If it doesnt suit, no need to look down your nose at those who do.

Pint with breakfast on matchday,lovely.

Enjoy an ethical fruit juice in a North St bistro instead

Seems strange seeing Sweeney, Tainton & Ritchie in that photo from 50 years ago and all three were sat right in front of me for the Cardiff game two weeks ago

Not that i'm a regular spoons customer but Isn't it quite obvious why people go to a spoons unless you're quite happy to spend over £6 in a city centre pub

Thank you to the late Beryl Fudge for organising my Supporters Club coach ticket and, of course, my match ticket.

It was a truly memorable day for so many reasons, not least the approach to Elland Road, seeing the washing lines (with washing hanging on them!) from the windows of our coach as we drove underneath, and the ‘warm’ welcome of both young kids and grown men spitting and throwing stones at the coach windows as we arrived to park close (not close enough!) to the ground, luckily no bricks, as this was ‘only’ Leeds, not Millwall.

Cheering like an idiot when we scored, and then running the gauntlet back to the coach at the end of the match.

Oh, and resigning myself to an inevitable detention for missing school.

It was all worth it though.

Oh Yes, and remembering the late Bill Shankly’s comments on the previous Saturday’s MotD, about how a Leeds vs Liverpool match in the next round would be a cracker.

A draw would be good Robbored but fingers crossed a win for us would be exceptional. With a lot of emotion within the club and the football community plus a potential to keep a good run a close home win in front of a full capacity gate is a potential outcome. Wonder if Mcguane will start with Williams suspended, or if they will pair Knight with Bird CM and play Earthy in the no. 10 role?

I think this is the main question for me. The other dilemmas are who starts up front and Yu or Sykes on the wing. Suspect with Yu being rested he will come in. If we're going to get a result we'll need to defend as a team and take the chances that come our way. Leeds I think are very quick in the press and likely to have a lot of pressure.

As an 8 year old this was my first away game and my dad took me to what was to be a famous win. Looking back and even now I can recall the disbelief that we won as we walked through the Leeds fans who even back then weren’t a particularly pleasant bunch with a big smile on my face

Probably the equivalent of us going to Man City and beating them, it was that momentous

Difficult game against a good side, and it’s going to be an emotional experience too with it being the first home game since the recent tragedy for LM and his family.

Hopefully the players will be fired up and we’ll see a performance like those against Leicester and Southampton last season. We are due a result against Leeds.

Rennie could play a bit, too, and was a key part of my all time favourite City side under Joe Jordan.

betting odds most favorable are City 1 Leeds 2. However, they said the exact same against Stoke. We will prove them wrong again and it will be a home win with a hard close contest with a resounding 3-2 home win.

Truly memorable. Think I was 17 and was certainly there on my own, when we scored I went totally wild only to then realise that nobody anywhere near me was celebrating, yep there I was ‘exposed’ in the middle of thousands of LUFC fans in the 70’s when things were very different than they are today

Hello all!    Don't like these 12.30 ko's, although it's at 14.30 here.  if the team that did well in the end at Stoke turns up and the sell out crowd gets behind them, I don't see any reason why we can't win. Mind you that's thinking with my heart, my mind says a draw would be a good result, anyway as long as we play well and don't look as if we are frightened of them, then I don't mind if we lose by a goal. Hope is a good win, so COYR's.

Some Cornish **** rocked up with son in full Leeds kit and wondered why he couldnt get in the home stands as I recall.

Entitled Leeds, "they go where they want"

Bet theyd welcome hundreds of Man U fans doing that at Elland rd....

I would have missed 2 days school then as I went up to Liverpool the day before to stay with my brother before heading to Leeds from there.

No chance of a detention (or worse) though, it was half term!
