MMc pre-match thoughts: https://www.bcfc.co.uk/video/interviews/mcguane-previews-plymouth/

They have drawn two and lost seven of their nine away games this season and were stuffed 6-1 at Carrow Road on Tuesday.

After the game Rooney said ‘I could probably put the under-18 team out there and they wouldn't concede six goals, so I'm very disappointed, angry, frustrated and the next 24-48 hours are not going to be very nice for the players, but we need to get to the bottom of why this is happening.’

They are currently 20th on 17 points.

Somebody on their forum has tagged this game ‘The battle of Thrashton Gate!’

They could be without both Morgan Whittaker and Lewis Gibson, https://the72.co.uk/2024/11/27/plymouth-argyle-rooney-whittaker-gibson-fitness-update/ other injury news here: https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/sport/football/wayne-rooney-plymouth-argyle-injury-9750742

What’s on matchday, https://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/whats-on-plymouth-argyle/

Argyle have sold out their allocation of more than 3,200 tickets for the game. It is the Pilgrims' shortest round trip of the 2024/25 campaign at 240 miles.

Plymouth Argyle Football Club was born in 1886, when two friends decided the town (as Plymouth was then) needed a football team which local people would be proud to play for and support.

The friends, F Howard Grose and Mr W Pettybridge, arranged a meeting at The Borough Arms. After a discussion, the name "Plymouth Argyle" was agreed on - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Centre-back Grose became the first captain of the new football club, which had no ground of its own so played its early matches in the 1886-7 season at opponents' grounds.

Shortly afterwards, the fledgling side made its home at a pitch in the Mount Gould area Plymouth.

The team's first game was on 16th October 1886, when they lost 2-0 against Caxton - a team from Cornwall.

Premier League referee Tim Robinson takes charge of this game, so far this season he has issued 52 yellow cards and one red in nine games, six of them in the top flight. He will be assisted by Tim Wood and Steve Meredith while the fourth official is Dean Whitestone.

Played for both

Kieran Agard, Paul Anderson, Ian Baird, Tyreeq Bakinson, Andre Blackman, Yannick Bolasie, Joe Bryan, Richard Davis, Keith Fear, Arnold Garita, Rene Gilmartin, Trevor Jacobs, Joe Lennox, Guy Madjo, Sean McCarthy, Alan Miller, Kevin Nugent, Karleigh Osborne, Scott Partridge, Forbes Phillipson-Masters, Bobby Reid, Gary Sawyer, Steven Sessegnon, Enoch Showunmi, Phil Starbuck, Ryan Taylor, Robbie Turner, Zak Vyner.

Last time out we recorded at 4-1 win https://www.bcfc.co.uk/video/red-zone/red-zone-bristol-city-4-1-plymouth-argyle/

In May Rooney was appointed as their Head Coach  https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cl77gj4pknwo The 38-year-old succeeded Ian Foster, who was sacked after we beat them.

In June they announced that Pete Shuttleworth would be Wayne Rooney's assistant head coach. The 45-year-old also worked with former Manchester United and England star Rooney at Birmingham City, DC United and Derby County.

In November it was confirmed that filming had begun on a behind the scenes documentary at Plymouth Argyle following the Championship side and their head coach Wayne Rooney.

At the end of May they signed former Swansea City full-back Nathanael Ogbeta. The 23-year-old was a free agent. The former Manchester City and England youth player spent the second half of last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers and has also had spells at Peterborough United and Shrewsbury Town.

In early July they signed midfielder Darko Gyabi and forward Muhamed Tijani on season-long loan deals Gyabi, 20, returns for a second loan spell at the club, after first joining from Leeds United in January. Tijani 23, arrives from Czech side Slavia Prague and could make the switch permanent when the loan expires.

They signed Netherlands Under-21s winger Ibrahim Cissoko on a season-long loan from French club Toulouse, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c1e5jzldq2yo

Also signed Icelandic international Victor Palsson on an undisclosed contract. The 33-year-old central defender joined from Belgium side KAS Eupen where he made 36 appearances last season, scoring two goals. He reunites with boss Wayne Rooney, who was Palsson's coach during his time with MLS side DC United.

Added Hungarian defender Kornel Szucs for an undisclosed fee.

On deadline day they signed midfielder Rami Al Hajj from Danish side Odense.

In October they signed former Watford and Burnley striker Andre Gray on a short-term deal. The 33-year-old was a free agent having left Saudi Arabian side Al-Riyadh in the summer. He has signed until January after Nigerian striker Muhamed Tijani was ruled out until the new year with a hamstring injury.

Let’s really get behind the Reds and cheer them on to three points, COYR.

Wouldn't be against us working out a suitable arrangement with him in January,, certainly still has something about him- will give a bit more experience/depth up top & allow Sincs/Fally time to work on their respective games!

Also wouldn't be too heavy on the finances..

Plymouth Argyle famous for being a bloody long way from most places. They must dread being in the same division as Carlisle.
Their home record is decent as opponents are knackered from the journey however they haven’t won away this season as they themselves are always cream crackered from the travelling.
To be really successful they need to move Plymouth to the midlands.
They are now managed by the first Cabbage Patch adult and record man Wayne Rooney. His arrival in Devon has created a big stir as Grandads everywhere lock up their wives.
Their last match was a 6-1 thrashing at the hands or beaks of the Canaries.

Most teams would be  licking their lips at the prospect of piling on the agony for our Southern cousins but this is Bristol Cosy Football Club where generosity abounds.
I want to see us tearing in to the opposition and leaving the long suffering home supporters with smiles on their chubby, rosy cheeked faces before the Christmas period.

Get into ‘em.

Sunderland is a worse journey, and not just because you have to go to Sunderland.

Annoyingly my ankle hasn’t quite recovered enough to attend tomorrow’s game.

I’m getting there, in fact I could probably hobble to Rooney’s rental home and ask if he could give me a door to door lift but not sure he’d go for it.

I'm going for a nerve wracking narrow 2-1 victory.

Arnold Garita is a blast from the past. His name cropped up a few weeks ago in a post match conversation in the pub. We were discussing Mayulu and Armstrong (depressing) and the various punts City had made on forwards that didn’t work out. At least with Garita he only cost £50k

Always makes I chuckle - especially when they sing it to Exeter!

I remember it being reported that Newport IOW sang it to Pompey when they played them in a friendly. Torquay have been known to sing it to Exeter as well!

Fun fact: Garita was on the bench for the Man Utd game. So all the memorabilia you get for that with things like Teamsheets, graphics of the goals etc includes old Paul’s name (I know because my sons got one on his wall)!

Zac Vyner also on the bench the last survivor of that day.

I love Sunderland. Had a bird up there many years ago at that globally known college of excellence Sunderland Poly! 😂

Anyway will never forget going into a pub and ordering two pints of Foster’s  The landlord said to me “is one of those for her” I said yeah! He said I’ll serve her two halves but she can’t have a pint in my pub! Love the place! A town that really respects their birds!

We are a much better side than Plymouth so we should win by 2 goals. I expect Plymouth to also get a consolation goal which might be even the first goal scored in the match as I suspect we will come out starting nervous. The 2nd half should see us scoring 2 or3.

Good luck to all attending tomorrow and let's get the three points in the bag

Hope you're right mate, our record against struggling cellar dwellers is pretty dismal so I won't be holding my breath but I am quietly confident 🤞

Managed to carve out a decent career in lower league football, he’s now at MK after a spell at Stockport.

Since leaving us Big Arnie Garita has had the most random career going, he’s currently with a club in Israel, his previous two teams have been in Saudi Arabia & Romania.

Bit of a hiding to nothing game today really. Win, and it’s meeting expectations. Draw - or worse, lose, and  this place could be toxic tonight.

For me, although the last couple of games were a useful yardstick about how far away we are from the better setups in this league (players, in game management, the whole shebang), this is a useful yardstick in a different way.

People have referenced the Birmingham away game last year for good reason. And by god, that was some of the most turgid unrelenting shite I’ve had the misfortune to witness. But equally, the last sides of this “ilk” we’ve played recently have been Cardiff and Wednesday, and they’re not a distant enough memory to recall how awful those were.

So, for me, a win is pretty much minimum expectations today. But I’m equally as interested in the manner of that win. Because “that’s the real quiz”.

Back on track; I'm looking for a good solid performance where we can dictate the play and showcase the improvements we've made this season. Again, if we want to be a top ten/top six side, then matches like today should whet the appetite.

No disrespect to Plymouth but their defining matches will be how they compete with the likes of QPR & Cardiff.

Definitely agree with your first sentence mate.

Obviously, this isn't like like pre-Oxford whereby we'd just been humiliated two games in a row. Quite the opposite, we've been pretty valiant in defeat. Nevertheless, two losses in a row is about the maximum that football fans can stomach before getting stressy (a few on OTIB only need one defeat to go nuclear!)

Oxford was a much needed win, and a fairly bright, if not exciting, performance. I'd probably take that again, without worrying about us looking too special. It's just about getting back to winning ways, and start building momentum.

But we'll win 6-0, so it's fine.

Just a win will do for me please. We need to stay close to the pack that’s battling for the top 6. To have another season done by Christmas will be so disappointing.

Big two ‘winnable’ games coming up.

Tbh Sheffield Wednesday while average, are pretty close in the league, statistically  and positionally etc. They've had a strong run since late September, they aren't the same category IMO.

Birmingham Away in a busy Christmas Period is fundamentally trickier than Plymouth st Home on paper still to really hit the busiest stages.

Early goal for and fast stsrt by us would help a lot today.

One similarity is Rooney, coming off conceding quire a few goals, may look to keep a Clean Sheet at all costs as he did in 2023 vs us by his own admission.

Just like the aforementioned Birmingham game, a Rooney side has conceded 9 in 3 Games before facing us. Omen?

I fully expect us to dominate and create chances but whether we convert those chances with our strike force is another matter

A bit worried about this one tbh we've only won 2 at BS3 they are going to shut up shop after last weeks drubbing, they will have a sold out away end roaring them on  Unless Nahki is on form I can't see us scoring I hope i'm wrong obviously but we are desperate for a natural goalscorer young than 35

It’s an interesting one - we were utterly dominant in the first half against Watford but the stats show 15 shots and only 1.47 xG. That kind of suggests we’re creating a lot of low quality chances so is it the phase before conversion where we could be looking?

I’m not sure this Plymouth team know how to shut-up shop.  Not been impressed with their CBs, and Sorinola and Mumba at FB/WB don’t have much of a defensive bone in their body.

Looking forward to watching Adam Randell (no20) in CM today.

Attendance estimate today 24,000.  24,003 if you allow 3 seats for Two Bellies Rooney to sit in.

Muff have sold 3,200.

I get the feeling that they will play 11 behind the ball though and that we won't have the creativity or tactical nous to break them down.  Hoping I'm wrong.

I think this is going to be a lot more difficult than people think. A -16 goal difference and a 6-1 midweek defeat makes it seem easy but football’s not like that. If it’s an open game City should win easily, but I feel that they’ll sit deep and try to score on a breakaway

a win is a must if not lansdown has a decision to make.

They could lose the next 3 and no decision will be made! This is a long term project, really don't see any decision any time soon.

Win, and talk off play offs remain active. The classic dangling carrot

Lose today, and wording changes... Building blocks, bring in one or two in windows,  before progressing to summer.

As others have said , progress is subjective. People feel like the football has been better to watch since Cardiff, however the best results have come away from home v team who want more of the ball in the modern disrespectful way(Boro, Norwich)

That said, moving forward. There are two running themes.

1. Recruitment in forward positions is simply not what we'd hope it would be. (So far) I mean LM isn't giving Fally major game time just for the banter.

2. Doubts remain about manning in the second half of games. Too often the feeling is he's been out manned.

3 how much of one effects two? (How many players do we truly have on a bench that are potential game changers? I mean we have good players, but the game changer wild card type?)

Not any more difficult than I think.

We’ve scored 3 goals in our last 4 games & one of those was a penalty.

Any win for us will be in a tight game, we don’t hammer anyone, for balance we don’t lose by many often when we do, either.
