Guest Officer Dibble Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 Christmas nostalga! On Boxing Day, The Independent had the old 1st Division Results from BDay 1978 - 25 years ago. Showed City in 8th place following a massive 5-0 win over Coventry with a hat-trick from Joe Royle and goals from Peter McCormack and Tom Ritchie. This must have been City's pinnacle as it all started to go down hill the following season. I think I was there in Block D of the Dolman - where they even found something to whinge about in those heady days! Anyway, as the memories came flooding back I'd thought I'd start some controversy by listing my best ever City team in watching since 1970! (Didn't watch much in the late 80's early 90's ). Sure the Forum has done this before but here goes. Gibson Cooper Collier Hunter Merrick (Capt) Murray Gow Tinnion Walsh (deadly free kicks) Galley (just keeps out Paul Cheesley) Jackie D Subs Shaw Whitehead Kellard (hard running midfielder from the early 70's) Ritchie (50/50 v Murray) Cheesely Left out Andy Cole as never saw him and thought he was never a true red. Joe Royle and Mick Hartford were also great players but never around long enough to qualify. MH in particular was a fine player in a struggling team. JD argueably wasn't around much also, though along with Norman Hunter was the greatest player I've seen in the Red Shirt. Let's all Hope in 5yrs time we will look back and laugh from the Premiership with names such as Miller, Coles and Lita in the all time great list. Happy New Year Dibble! (previously Tooting Red)

REDOXO Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 I like yourself was a John Galley fan... but....To say he was better than the Cheese is stretching credibility a notch or three to far Nevertheless I'll give this a go Shaw Emanual (spelling??) Collier Hunter Sweeney Whitehead Gow Spiring Walsh Jacki Cheese-----Subs Cole Taylor Cashley Tinnion Merrick...............
Claverham_Red Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 what about the bloke who has scored over 350 goals? surely john atyeo has to be in the dream team
Br 1st ol Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 Keith Waugh Andy Llewellyn Sean Taylor Rob Newman Darren Barnard Scott Murray Gary Shelton Brian Tinnion Jackie Jackanoski Andy Cole Bob Taylor Janov...you must be aged 30-37.... Like myself you have picked players from the 80's..and probably your first exposure to city.... Your first love never dies.... cant argue with your selection: Plus on the bench: Keith Curle Alan Walsh Steve Galliers Ralph Milne Stevie Neville Howard Pritchard But what about that nippy s0d, Trevor Morgan??
England Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 Interesting thread that will probably draw teams based on the period each of us has watched City - those older amongst us having been lucky enough to see more players. My team:- Gibson - one of the very best but calls for Cook would be difficult to put down Cooper - still had international class although the pace had decreased Connor - was a rock but Hunter and Rookes pushed him close in my list Low - bit of a wierdo but read the game brilliantly and worked well with Connor Merrick - best captain City have had and always skillful - timing of tackle superb Tainton - pushed very hard by Murray and Skirton but his workrate swung it for me Gow - arguably City's best ever player, hard, industrious, skillful and scored goals Tinnion - just edged it for me over Walsh for overall workrate - equal left foot skill Ritchie - superbly skillful who could run all day -only City player to play like Cruyff Garland - great player who went on to play well in the then first division Atyeo - cannot leave out the greatest goalscorer ever in a City shirt - superb Subs - far too many to mention
Lita For Congo Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 Players for City who played during my life time. Welsh Brennan Taylor Sebok(really rated him) Llewellyn Tinnion Shelton Jackanoski Murray Goater Taylor
GrenadaRed Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 In my viewing days: Welsh Curle Barnard Taylor Newman Walsh Tinnion Murray Jackie Goater (Tough call between him and Taylor) Cole
22A Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 Not a full team, but three positions I will choose; Gibson over Cook and Cashley for goal; Gow in the midfield and most definitely Galley up front. The trouble is though, none of us have a knowledge of every City player. The team that was league runners up in 1906/07 presumably had some decent players in it. How about a Wedlock & Gow midfield pairing or Alan Skirton putting crosses over to Bob Taylor or Murray passing to Atyeo?
