Jamie Smith

In the WDP, at the bottom of the article that Lita may be leaving, there is an interesting paragraph about Jamie Smith. It says:

'Out of contract defender Jamie Smith will decide later this week whether to accept City's offer of a new one-year deal. Smith claimed last night: ''i have had offers from some other clubs''

If i was Smith, and had the offer of a first-team place at a league one team, i wouldn't blame him for leaving. I can't see him getting ahead of Carey in the line-up. Will anyone be bothered when he goes? I won't

If Smith can get a 2 or 3 year contract elsewhere at 31 he should take it. Cant see City offering him more than a 1 year contract.

Our offer is apparently only for a year and as Smith commutes from Birmingham, if he can get something similar or even a longer deal that is nearer to his home, I think he'd be wise to take it.

Carey's return to us means that I can't see him being more than a squad player next season anyway, and with Coles now likely to stay Carey is pretty certain to be used solely as a right back and as Smith can't really play in any other position, I reckon he'll be on the bench a lot unless Louis picks up an injury.

I thought he lived in Surrey

It as a suprise to many that Smith was offered another year. With Carey's return Smith is surplus to requirements especially as Coles can play right back when he has to.

I heard that Smith is a positve influence off the pitch which is partly why he was offered another deal but if he can a longer deal elsewhere then he'd be wise to take it.

How often is he likely to be on the pitch though? I say don't bother to wake me up before you go...go. blushing.gif

Bradley Orr can also do a very job at right back and it wouldn't surprise me to see Griff Jones have a couple of games there this season.

Last close seasons bad deal was offering MB another season.

Smith is this seasons bad deal.

We've got Carey, Coles, Orr, Harley & Jones (Academy) who can all play right back and with one central defender in and another possibly on the way, especially if Coles goes (I think he won't)then we've enough options at RB.

Save his wages and sigN another centre half to cover.

Ryan Harley plays RB.

As i_am_red said, so too can Scott Murray and as we're paying him a fortune and he's not delivering on right wing, I'd consider playing him there. He'd also fit in at right wing back if we go for a 5-3-2.

Cover also from Coles and Orr in addition to first choice Carey I don't think we need him.

Hopefully Stewart will also bring the attitude in the dressing room that Smith might take with him when/if he leaves. I'm not sure why he was offered an extension in the first place.

I wish him well if he moves on of course.

I have never thought Smith was great, rash tacles and bookings cost us,I feel he is slow and never linked up with Murray as Carey use to.

Makes more sense to save on wages and buy a good centre half.

Let him go! Smith has been a weaklink in the back 4. With a defender reportedly coming in, carey can play right back and rekindle the old carey/murray partnership. i hope he's got a better contract somewhere else! praying smiley.gif No offence to him.

Murray has played at right back as you say but he's pretty hopeless.I can remember him being constantly out of position and missing tackles last time he played there under Wilson about 4 seasons ago.

Murray at right back would be a liability in my opinion.

yes Murray was awful as a right back. No pace and kept chasing shadows and made himself very exposed! Hence we let in lots of goals at the back that season. Murray has lost some pace already so a right back birth would not be a good option imo.

its interesting because after Carey left us last summer, there was nothing but praise for Smith, but as soon as Carey came back, i think we could all see who was by far the better defender. I hope Smithy well, but as a full-back, i was never convinced of his defensive abilities.
