As we have a few Bristol City fans from the USA on this forum. I was wondering what they think the score will be tonight?

englandsmile4wf.gifUSA 1 - Engand 3 englandsmile4wf.gif

Not sure what sort of team the yanks are putting out but given its a pretty young and fairly inexperienced England team i wouldnt be surprised if its a lot closer than 1-3 - and i may even go so far as to say we could easily get beat!!!!!

its pretty much England B

....and as such, if USA play anywhere approaching their strongest side they will beat us.

Even if we were fielding our strongest side ourselves, I suspect they might beat us anyway what with home advantage being exaggerated by the amount of travelling our players will have had to do at the end of a very long season anyway.

USA are ranked (joint) 10th in the World. That's the same ranking as Italy, 2 places higher than current European Champions Greece and 9 places higher than Germany.

Is there actually a point to flying half way around the world and playing the USA right at the end of the Premiership season?

If I'm not doing anything I'll watch it, but otherwise I won't worry too much if I miss it.

At the end of the day it's an England game and Being English I will watch it and cheer them on with a few lagers as well. Although I predict a tough game I think we'll come through it.

Well I will be watching the match on ESPN this afternoon as we have cable TV, supporting England, while my wife no doubt will cheer on the USA.

The interesting thing here is that 99% of the population (and probably a little more than that) are completely unaware that this match is actually happening. The only media to mention it was NPR radio (America's public broadcasting station - a bit like Radio 4).

Those that I have mentioned it to seem convinced that the USA will get murdered. There is still the misconception in the general public that they have an inferior side, until they get reminded how far they made it in the last World Cup. That said, I expect that the true fans know that it is likely to be a close-run thing.

However, mention Women's soccer here and there is a completely different reaction. It is much bigger than mens soccer and they consider themselves to be the best side in the World.

I have to agree. when i was in the USA last year (April 04). I went training with an ex-city trialist (Sean Doyle) and who was in the middle of the park training a group of girls? ex-Forest & Btighton striker Peter Ward. I watched them training and the commitment was second to none. If i am not mistaken i think they are/were World champions.

Unless the system has changed, i have always had my reservations about FIFA rankings...Mexico were world number 4 for ages, and let's be honest, they aren't the 4th best team in the world. Similarly, i don't think that the USA are really the 10th best team in the world, although i have a feeling they might put in a good performance tonight and get a decent result.

Crouch is injured.

I wasn't aware Crouch was injured... I've been at work today, thus missing that bit of news

Good tour for Johnson though. If he scores I suppose he will be worth 30m to Jordan.

Sounds like a certain bunch of fans when a certain player scored a goal in a friendly international this season rolleyes.gif

You know I joke.

I'm going with a 2-2 draw. USA are an ok side, as are England. A draw would be a decent result for both sides.

I don't disagree. If Parkin is worth about 750k which is what I think will be accepted for him then Lita isn;t worth 1 million.

2-0 England (Richardson again), I am really enjoying this.  Shame most of my colleages and neighbours (or should I say neighbors) here are completely oblivious to the event.

It's an interesting encounter... Far better than I anticipated.

The U.S. are quite dirty actually... Eddie Pope is a major hacker!

Well they got through to the last eight in the World Cup, so I'd say that's about right. Thing is, though 'saaah-caaah' does not have the penetration in the US like it has in the UK, with 270m people, even a lower percentage being interested means they have a huge following. During the World Cup, it wasn;t just ex-pats that filled the streets when their teams - like Mexico, England etc - were playing. Matches were in the middle of the night, yet when the USA were playing the streets of Manhattan were packed and bars showing the matches were literally full with people waiting outside in the vain hope someone would leave and they might be allowed in. It was amazing. We underestimate the following in the US even though they get far less coverage than traditional US sports.

Additionally, saaah-caaah is being played in more and more schools now - partly because the kids love it, and partly because it suits the schools as the insurance is nowhere near as high as it is for gridiron or baseball. You can go up Central Park any weekend and see kids up there playing games of saaah-caaah, jumpers for goalposts, small boys in the park, isn't it? Mmmm? etc. (sorry, got into Ron Manager mode there).

Anyway, like I say, America has 4 1/2 times the UK population, and a serious attitude to any sport, both socially and scientifically. The nation loves winners, especially in sport. They see it as a way to export and showcase the philosophy of capitalism as successful around the globe, and their society is geared towards producing winners. As these kids currently playing at school progress, the US national team will get better and better.

Mark my words, the States will win the World Cup in the next 20 years.

If we have quality around the squad like we normally do, shaun wright phillips and Jermaine Defoe would be alot better than these friendlys!

I also thought Michael Carrick was fantastic tonight and deserves to be in the England squad for the world cup, Jenas was bloody rubbish along with Alan smith, Wes Brown and David james! chant6ez.gif

While I agree that the kids are playing more and more soccer in the schools in the US, the top young athletes here are still being lured by the almighty dollar into American Football, Basketball and Baseball. Major League Soccer (MLS) just does not have the pulling power of these major sports...yet.

That said, if they start finding money in domestic US Soccer, then there is a very good chance that the athletes will end up playing soccer rather than the main-stream US sports. However, that will need significant investment in MLS and more competition on the domestic front.

The US needs kids like Freddie Adu (played for DC United aged 14) to come through and develop the commercial aspect of the sport here. We need kids like that to become the Tiger Woods of soccer, become superstars and really put the sport firmly on the map here as it is still perceived as a minor sport.

Most fans still follow European soccer and ignore the US domestic leagues. With improved domestic exposure, the money will flow and that truly is the only thing that counts in this insular, inward-looking society.

Once the money flows into MLS - the rest of the world had better watch out.

I've been here 13 years and have witnessed the continued growth in both general awareness of the game & of the continued participation.

For youngsters involvement in actually playing soccer is now firmly established as the U.S.A.'s 2nd most popular sport. It's interesting how it is often the kids who actually educate the adults, yet another dimension of its broad appeal is how girls and women embrace the game.

Although MLS is a limited product in its availability ,its development generally is well managed .Significant over the last year or two has been the shift away from charismatic "oldies" to a more youthful focus. The MLS has already established itself at a level above that of our beloved club both in playing standards & attendances.Therfore its not surprising to see a flow of American players making progress elsewhere in more competitive markets.

With such a huge resource of talented athletes ,I too believe the U.S.A. one day will win the World cup,but that probably still will not be until they fully realise that soccer is the Worlds game.Greater coverage is the key, satellite & cable contribute, but the real elements are of course the traditional media channels.

Kind of intrigued to see how Glazer will handle the Man.Utd brand and whether another Chivas is in progress?

A group of us out here watching the 2 games, have so far had a really good time but unfortunatly have to go to the game tomorrow. It's definatly been an experience with the amercian approach to the game of soccer. Also taken in 2 baseball games whilst over here, seen the cubs and the yankees. A few other city fans over here but not as many as I would have thought. If there are any that will be about tomorrow I'll be in the car park enjoying the planned bbq before the game tomorrow with City flag flying high.

I've been saying this for a while now....I think they will win it before we do basically because the US players want to win and prove to the country that the sport is worth watching.....the majority of England's team seem to be more concerned about posing in some trendy bar with a hot bird on their arm for the tabloids...the English public is so hungry for success that you can feel the pressure on the team and each time we buckle under it.

Also I am surprised how many people I know over here now that follows the sport because they played in college etc. Only a small percentage of these kids playing in school will be considered good enough for 'Football' or Baseball....there will still be plenty of talented athletes looking for alternatives when they get to college and soccer could be a good choice for them.
