Why The Big Deal About A Players Age?

Many post's on here over the years have complained about signing players over 30, there are a couple questioning the loan signing of Quinn, quoting his age (31). We need a short term fix, the immediate concern must be to get away from and stay away from the relegation zone, then be looking at the top six.

For those who cite a players age as a negative when he's 30+, how would you feel about Teddy Sheringham on loan for a month - he's 39 and has scored 22 goals in 41 appearances (33 starts) for West Ham. Fitness and ability are surely the criteria for the short term, not age.

Exactly! I don't want to turn this into yet another tinnion thread but he was a good example. It wasn't that long ago we were proud of the fact that he could outplay most players almost half his age!

In Quinn's case I think it is the fact that he has never been a goal scorer rather than his age. He is definitely not the 'sniffer' that the manager is looking for. Sheringham on the other hand has an excellent strike rate throughout his career - I don't think there would be much negativity from supporters if he was signed on loan.

G.J. - "I've always wondered wheter he would score more goals playing for me and now I've got a chance to find out"

We must assume that the "I've always wondered" is based on something more substantial than a whim, GJ must see something he believes he can work with and Quinn himself claims to be an unselfish player who is happy to set up opportunities for others - but that's taking the thread off on a tangent.

Never understood why it matters, there are countless examples of players over 30 still doing the business well into their 30s - I think Alan Shearer was still knocking them in for England at 32 and is still scoring in the prem at 35. If someone is still cutting it there's no reason why they can't play till they're 50 as far as I'm concerned - but there's no pleasing some people on here who seem to think that under 30 = kid with no experience, over 30 = past it !

Maybe GJ has in mind that with the absence of a "sniffer" at the club already, he can look deep inside Quinn and reawaken the selfish side that lies in all human beings. It's just hidden more deeply in some than others!

All hail our new 60 goal a season striker James Quinn :D

Alex Russell is 32 and he is a year (if not two years) older then Quinn and have seen loads of posts on this forum saying how we have missed him a lot this season.

:grr:

Perfect comback comment!!

Can you miss something you've never had?

I'll have a little wager that if Russell's debut isn't as the masterful playmaker, who dictates play for 90 minutes, scoring a hatrick himself in a 11-0 victory over the team at the top of the table, there will be plenty of negative comments about him, including that at 32, having suffered an injury, he's past it.
