My Day Out At Oldham

Remind me to thank the chaps who have decided, for reasons best known to themselves, to cone off large areas of the M6 between J11-19.

I didn't see a soul working and the improvements seem to consist of cats eyes which, whilst pleasing on the eye, did nothing for my demeanour!

A tad miffed, I feel.

Despite using the M6 Toll, I arrived around Manchester at about 4.15, so, met up with some mates after the match, had a great time discussing the game I didn't see :( :@

That's the second time this season that travelling to see our heroes in the North of this great country, visiting our whippet owning cousins, has ended with a return trip on the Motorways that serve to stop one from reaching a destination, as opposed to speeding ones journey to it

Anyway, can't stop, I'm leaving for Chesterfield now, see you Wednesday :city::city:

Had the same problem with both the recent England matches. Only got to Old Trafford 45 min before kick off for Austria match and arrived 25min late for Poland match. Despite leaving 6 hours before the match.

Just think in that time u could have boarded a flight to Spain watched LA Liga match say Real Madrid boarded the plane home and had tea.

what time did u leave. we got there at 12.30 found a nice pub and managed to wach some footy on sky!

Left at 9am on the Sat, someone cleverly allowed a wide load on the m6 which blocked up two lanes!

On the Wed didn't leave Bristol until 2, slightly later than planned but that should still have been ample time.

If I never go on the m6 again that will be too soon.

You have my sympathies. We set off 8.30am from London expecting to be in Oldham in time for a leisurely lunch. We only just made it for kick-off. I couldn't work out what all the delay was. We were stopping and starting for about 30-odd miles before any coned-off area. The roads in this country are a disgrace. Those of you down in Bristol should just be thankful you don't have to negotiate the M25 daily.

When we went into the ground just before KO, there were three City coaches. When we came out after the game, there were six plus a minibus, so presumably some of the CATS coaches also missed kick-off.

See you all at Chesterfield.

It's not the roads RedTop, I think it's more the sheer volume of cars. Not enough people share cars, and there is no cost-effective and reliable public transport for people to use as an alternative.

When I went to Sweden my friends there were shocked that I kept commenting on how good their train service was; they take it for granted. We need a socialist government!

Left home at 0730hrs and was at the ground by 1130hrs, the key to away trips is planning.

I always leave loads of extra time, as I would rather get there early than miss the game!

Left Birmingham at about 11.15 leaving 3 hours 45 minutes for a journey which the rac route planner informed me would take 1 hour 40 minutes. At 2.45 we were still in traffic 20 miles from manchester but after some schumacher-esque driving we got to the groung only ten minutes late,by which time i had already received my official text message to tell me that we were one nil down.Flew into the visiting directors car park to see a saab fly in almost as quickly, containing amongst others Steve Lansdown. After a thoroughly entertaining game that finished 3 all(didnt see the first goal so it doesn't count) made all the more entertaining by the p*ssed up subbers falling over each other during a rousing rendition of "i predict a riot",the return journey was completed in 1 hour 20 minutes on a clear m6. :grr: !!!!

It will be a long time before i go on the m6 again!Left enough time anticipating some traffic but that was ridiculous.Remember that chap who cycled to all the games a couple of seasons ago?Think he was onto something!

Yes, we do need a socialist government.

But there are more immediate ways of improving things.

As you say accurately, the real problem is the volume of traffic on the roads. This stems from the fact that we are a ridiculously car-dependent country, the most car-dependent in Europe in fcat. It's not an accident that this coincides with the fact we have on the whole a poor transport system.

I actually live nearer Oldham than I do Bristol so it was relatively easy for myself to negotiate the transport system and get there for a decent time. But I can appreciate for most of you using the train would have been either impractical or ridiculously expensive.

A real solution would be an effective and affordable integrated national public transport service. Otherwise people won't be inclined to give up their cars and frequent congestion is the obvious by-product.

Just remember it was a socialist government that spelt the end of the railways as the primary trnasport system under the Beeching reforms of the 60s.

But just to give a political balance to this post the 80s saw an uncontrolled investment in roads and under investment in rail!

In 1961 the Macmillan government (tory) appointed Dr. Beeching as the mad axeman to sort out the railways.

That sounds more like 'Never To The Darkside' than you Robins72......... mind you, he would not get off the plane if he did?

Do Ryan air fly there????

Old joke I know but still a good one?????

In 1961 the Macmillan government (tory) appointed Dr. Beeching as the mad axeman to sort out the railways.

And so my place of birth lost its railway station and the line....... in the end the powers that be built a road and a sports centre and loads of houses....... hmmmmm
