Keepers Ball
I was a goalkeeper.Ok an amateur one but a goalkeeper all the same. Now correct me if I'm wrong but I was always under the impression that when diving for a ball not only do you launch yourself in the air but you also have some trajectory in the process towards the ball.Twice now Ive seen this Basso bloke jump and position his body horizontally but with no direction. He did it versus Swindon and again today against Chesterfield. Now if he had directed his dives properly I can't say if he'd have reached the shots but i'll bet any bottom Dollar, Phillips would have got to one of them. What was all that whinging about coming for crosses ?I've said it before and I'll say it again. What would you rather have ?An agile shot stopper with sharp reflexes or a some bloke who "supposedly" comes for crosses but can't launch into a proper dive ? mozo
I do wonder if Johnson dropped Phillips because of the moaners on this forum, because I can't see why Basso was considered a replacement.Phillips has had the pointless rest that the moaners wanted and Basso has had his chance.I think we've learnt today that Steve Phillips was not, after all, the reason we were leaking goals. I've defended Phillips all along but still gave Basso a good cheer befor both his games. He isn't an improvement and we need SP back in the team.quick edit: moaners is being harsh, i mean detractors. I think he would saved the 2nd goal possibly. Generally Basso is better at kicking, commading his area and crosses. What we need is a bit of both! Picky. I thought Basso made a couple of decent saves 2nd half too, especially the 1 on 1. But having said that Phillips would only have conceeded 3 today. Guest rgr
Looking back on it we should have just signed Chris Day on a free when he was available. I haven't seen todays goals yet (I'm living in Nottingham at the moment and as a student it costs far too much to travel) but the second Swindon goal Basso should not have let in as goalkeepers should not concede on their near post like that. As an amateur goalkeeper myself I would have been disappointed with that.

farmeronecow
Steve Phillips commanding his box, just like John Shaw did!! we could do with a john shaw or a ray cashley right now, along with the rest of the boys from back then.

But having said that Phillips would only have conceeded 3 today. You'd have dropped him because you've blamed him for just about every goal we've conceded this season, even though the back four changes every game and the midfield offers no defensive cover at all.The facts are that Phillips was PFA divisional keeper in 2003 and also conceded the least goals in the entire four divisions in Wilson's last year, Basso is a 30 year old who hadn't played above Conference level up until last Friday. Admin Maesknoll Red Posted November 19, 2005 Admin Share Posted November 19, 2005 Until the team learn to defend we could play Basso & Phillips at the same time and still concede goals. To blame Basso for todays defeat would be ridiculous, we could have had Petr Cech in goal today and still lost. Phillips is an excellent shot stopper, but he has still conceded at an unacceptable rate - also due to the defence in front of him.

The anti-Phillips stuff always was shallow and, if nothing else, today highlighted where the real problems lie.

dagest
If anyone thinks Basso is a better goalkeeper than Phillips, please tell me what you are drinkingBased on the two individual's last two performances, Basso is the better keeper. Only a member of the Phillips Mafia would blame Basso for any of today's goals.
