Bournemouth - Striker bid rejected

01 Feb 2006 17:11

Bournemouth chairman Peter Phillips has confirmed the Cherries snubbed an eleventh hour bid from Bristol City for the services of James Hayter.

Phillips had already rejected two offers from the Robins last week, before a deal worth in the region of £300,000 was tabled late on Tuesday.

However, the Dean Court supremo took little time to decide the bid was still short of the club's valuation.

He told the Daily Echo: "They tried very hard to close the gap, but we were still too far apart and the difference was substantial.

"The guaranteed amount of money didn't change and although the new offer applied lots of add-ons, we weren't inclined to gamble.

"Accepting the offer would have meant this football club wagering a large sum of money on the future success of Bristol City, which I don't think would have made much sense."

Reading this you'd think wow, Bmth turned down £300k when, from what we are told, they actually didn't!

Had they accepted the deal quoted in the EP from Bournemouth media sources, they would have got:

£75k now.

£75k over twelve months (Football League Rules)

£150k.......possibly never :(

I know that if you're as skint as Bmth claim to be, £75k is a lot of money and far better than nothing..........my point is that it's not £300k, probably never would have been and that makes their standpoint even easier to understand.

I liked it when Phillips said that if the deal had gone ahead, they would have been relying on the future success of Bristol City to get their money, and that would make no sense. He knows us so well.

Leaving aside my loyalty to BCFC I'd have to say well done B'mouth. They have a player they rate highly and had the courage of their convictions to keep a player they know MAY walk in the summer. We held out for £1m for Leroy adament he was going no-where for less than that figure. I hope our board will have the same resolve if we ever find ourselves in Mr. Phillips's situation.

I have also got to admire GJ and SL for not bowing to pressure to spend more money than we can afford, this especially true of GJ who's word "Judge me in January with MY team" could come back to bite him on the a***. The January transfer window creates a sellers market with clubs either end of the table knowing it's the only chance to strengthen their squads with first team experianced players so they can up the price.

So having seen BB's figures I'm not suprised B'mouth didn't go for the deal and the goals Hayter get for them between now and the end of the season may be the differance between mid table and the relagation dog fight.

The difference is that as soon as the offer was tabled Leroy was out of here. He didn't want to stay whilst it seems Hayter is. IMO Hayter is looking for a big pay out on the signing on fee. One greedy b****

You've hit the nail on the head. If clubs, in the summer, know that they don't have to pay B'muff anything for Hayter. they can get him by offering him huge personal terms including a signing on fee. Clever.

The other difference was that we were offered £1m cash up front, no strings attached. That's a big difference. I doubt we'd have sold if the £1m was split the way Bournemouth deal appears to have been.

Or perhaps it might be that a move to a club eight places below your present club in the same division isn't quite as attractive as a move to a club already in a higher division and likely to be challenging for promotion from there.

Just a thought :farmer:

How does it make him a greedy *******?

The guy is approaching his late twenties, he's never played for a big club, he probably doesn't earn as much as a few of the people on this board, he probably has 7-8 years left in him if he is lucky.

Surely obtaining the best deal for him and his family should be of paramount importance to the guy?

And why would WE be such a big draw to him?

Amazes me, some of the comments on here!

Rubbish. Greed has nothing to do with it. The lads in his mid twenties, and as he said, this next contact he takes is very important to him. He may have a family and/or kid to support, nothing wrong with making sure he can get the best deal possible. A footballers career can end tommorow, and by the time he is 33/34, he could be retired. What if he has no qualifications? what then?

Fair play to him. Greed in my eyes is Rio Ferdinand turning down £95,000 a week because he wants £120,000 a week!!!!!

Nothing wrong with this lad getting the best he can out of what could be his only big(ish) money move. We would all do the same.

I totally agree with the last two points. Another point is that by joining City he is actually dropping down the League, from what I have read, you would think that we are some masive Championship Club. I have a feeling that he might stay at Bournemouth and sign this decent contract that he has allegedly been offered.

I'm not particularly sad that the Hayter deal did'nt come off, certainly though it would be nice to start playing at full strength with players filling the strikers shirts who can fulfill that function instead of being in breech of the trades description act.

With regard to buying players we have over the last 20 years as poor a record as any club in the entire country.Only 10% of the players purchased for fee's have proved their worth to such an extent that they have subsequently moved on for a bigger fee.So succesful are we in the transfer acquisition stakes that most players who sign for us on high wages eventually turn into lame ducks that we can not even give away. The Pulis era established him as a great exponent of how to turn a pound into a penny.
