Left Side of Midfield

Whatever way you say it or see it, we haven't had an orthodox attacking left winger since Aaron Brown was injured, Micky Bell took his place......then got injured.....then CW became the first in a long list of players who can do a job.In other words it wasn't their best position or perhaps, putting it yet another way, where they woud choose to play if they were given that choice.

DW had signed Goodfellow who was very left footed as a right winger and the lad was never given a chance on his favoured foot.

Over the years we've had some top class wide players on the left like:Whitehead, Sharpe, Walsh, Smith and Tinnion. All different players and Aaron Brown was probably the last in that line although, despite "potential" he will never be seen as one of our best, due to a mixture of inconsistency, doubts about his attitude and a lack of goals.

Since then DW, BT & GJ have used Woodman,Murray, Wilkshire, Brown, Myrie Williams, McAllister & Showumni in the role, all have had some successes but broadly fall into three camps.Defenders, who can't attack Central Midfielders who can do a bit of both or Attackers/Strikers, who can't defend.

At long last, it now seems that we are signing a wide player from Cheltenham who:

a.Wants to play wide.

b.Can play on either flank.

c.Can also play as a full back.

d.Is Ex Man Utd.

f.Is highly rated at Cheltm.

If, as rumoured, Scott Brown is going the other way, that's a shame, but with Scott currently third choice for the wide left berth and fifth choice for the central midfield place that many feel he would be better in, in GJ's team, it's one of those moves that would appear to stack up at face value for all concerned.

I wondered at the time that we signed LJ, why, because we already had Brown and three other central midfielders.LJ's presence in the squad has made an appearance in central midfield even more unlikely and the lad needs games.

A loan might suit everyones purpose with Cheltm getting an immediate, quality replacement, even if it's only for a month & City a genuine wide left player that can defend and attack.

I think this is one where we need to wait and see especially with Brown OOC at the end of this season and wondering where he fits in GJ's plans.

Now, where's that striker :whistle2:

Good post, hopefully he gets a chance from sections of Citys support who back Scott Brown.

Whether anyone likes it or not Scott Brown is obviously not in GJ's plans so what's the point in having a player who will not get a look in when you can get a player who could do a very good job in a position that were poor in.

Haven't seen enough of this Wilson but from what I've read he's done well at Cheltenham, fingers crossed if he does sign for us he can continue to do well and maybe push on again.

Good God, actually agree with every word! :clapping:

I to hope that Wilson if/when he comes is given every chance by the Scott Brown fan club. This seems to bring a better balance to the squad without extending it greatly. It also ensures that the Academy guys don't see potential opportunties disappearing in front of their eyes.

GOOD POST!

Its all about getting the right balance for the team and this is what Gary Johnson excels in.

Scott Brown is a good player who gets goals but he doesn't fit into the team very well plus he is nearly out of contract.

Everyone should get behind Gary Johnson, with his credentials is obvious ge knows what he's doing.

Good post.

In my eyes, Brown is a central midfielder and we have 4 better in Noble, Skuse, Russell and Johnson.

A wide player is required to this current squad, and I from what I have heard about this Wilson guy he could do a very good job for us.

Then your eyes are like two peeholes in the snow. Add up all the goals from the above formentioned and see if it equals Scott Browns tally.

The only problem I can see with this deal is I would be amazed if Scott Brown agreed to a move to Cheltenham

His scouser mate Gillespie is there, and he would have a better chance of first team selection.........like Stewart at Yeovil.

i cant realy see how we can come to any conclusion about scott playing in the middle, his prefered roll, we aint seen him play there, add to that the goal threat that he brings and he was nationwide player of the month when he had a run in the team and scored 3 important goals.

ok, he looked rusty at rotherham but other players looked of the pace when they first returned(brooker for one), why get rid of him???, i know for a fact he loves life at city, hes been unlucky with injurys.

i do agree we need a wide player who can cross a ball and go past players but why lose a versitile asset like scott brown.

i still think skuse is getting better but still cant track players coming into our box, russell wasnt part of gj plans at the start of the season but now it seems hes a regular, lee j is still a bit enigmatic, noble has had is nose pushed out, only murray has performed over and above what we expected.

by all means get this bloke but not at the expense of scotty.

Scott, who, for the record I rate & like, has a few options.

Let me also say I would offer him a two year contract when he returns from loan and, before someone else points it out, I know it's not up to me! :D

If he comes back here he can weigh up his options at the end of the season, although I don't think he's over 23 and therefore not entitled to a Bosman.

Having said that, City would have a difficult case to argue for anything but a sell on clause if they don't offer him a contract, based on his appearances this season, at any tribunal and a compromise nominal fee + sell on, is likely.

He's going to get, relativeley no pressure, first team football as the crowds and expectation level at Whaddon Rd and the away support isn't what it is at AG and a relegation dogfight will suit his style, particularly if he gets a chance in central midfield, which is his preffered position from his youth days.

John Ward is an excellent coach and a very nice chap who has a record of improving young or "discarded" players......sometimes ours  ! The lad's had a tough time and needs an arm around the shoulder rather than a kick up the backside.

At the end of the months loan, we may have two of our four central midfielder injured, so we may well need him, particularly if LJ got a knock and I'd still like to see Scott in a central midfield attacking role.

If he doesn't want to stay at Cheltm, then I have no doubt that there will be numerous other options and if we don't don anything else, WE MUST, get a clause in any agreement because this young man will be an excellent player in the near future, given the opportunity. :city:

Let's hope this is a win, win opportunity for both club and players.

Having spoken to Scott and seen him home and away, I think he would be better there, it's where he played as a youth player and I think he would have more goal scoring and shooting opportunities from there.

Agree with the resst , but just remember it's only a loan to start wth.

I don't want to start another GJ debate but Cole Skuse on the left or right of midfield  and it's taken ages for him to sign a genuine wide player.

Everyone should get behind Gary Johnson, with his credentials is obvious ge knows what he's doing.

I have no doubt that everyone wants him to succeed however, as has been debated on many occassions, that doesn't equal blind faith and never will at AG.Get us promoted and keep us there, then kick on and he'll have a great deal more belief from all quarters.Track record gets you the job then you prove yourself to fans who have been bruised and battered by what has gone before......that's not GJ's fault he and every other manager inherits it, fair or not

Course he'll be given a chance, not like it was his decision to let Brown go!

I'd like Scotty to do well at Cheltenham and come back for us to become a regular member for the 1st team. But GJ may not quite favour my idea

Looking forward to tomorrow, seeing what Wilson adds to our team.

Shame it wasn't Russell, for two reasons:

1. He's knocking on and is highly unlikely to get a new contract at City, so a chance elsewhere to secure a future deal.

2.IMO Brown is a better all round player,I am mystified that people think Russell has defennsive qualities, he reminds me of Matty Hewlett!!!!!

Still agree fervently that it is nonsense to equate Wilson's arrival in any way with Scotty being out of favour, that was already the case.
