Rising Our Game

I don't think many people would disagree that the last two games at Coventry and Oldham have culminated in our two best displays of the season. I actually think Oldham provided us with tougher opposition than Cov, but if anything it spurred us on to an even more impressive and resounding display yesterday.

Our results and performances against the better teams in League One have on the whole been pretty decent. We've beaten S****horpe, played well in beating Crewe, come back and beaten a good Tranmere side and did ourselves no disgrace at Forest in the league and beat them in the cup. It seem that at the moment, the bigger the occassion and better the opposition - the better City play!

If this is true, then beware Middlesborough on Saturday!

Do people think this is true and if so is there a danger that we will be too complacent against lesser teams?

Remember, over the Xmas period we dropped point at Cheltenham and Orient and also at Ashton Gate versus Bournemouth...

That may have been the reason that City dropped points against lower teams in the first place.

The bottom line is that the more realistic of us on here have pointed out many times that City have managed to remain in the mix all season without playing well consistanly. We had seen a couple of good halves here and there but by and large City had been playing well below par and at times shockingly bad (first 45 against Cheltenham,Trannie et al)

The last two games have been what we have been waiting for all season - good, solid and consistant performances for 90 mins where City actually look the biz.

The upcoming Brighton game will be interesting as its the first game at AG since City have started to hit some form.

Maybe, and I'll be there again. But personally the JP Trophy does not interest me at the moment. I want to see us shine next Saturday against Boro and continue our success in the league, we already have two rearranged games and I'm not sure if we'll be able to cope with too many more. That said I've no doubts Johnson will be going out for a win Tuesday with the strongest possible team.

We actually have the best record in the division against sides in the bottom half and are the only side not to have lost to a team in the bottom half.

I think that over the years I've been watching, generally, City have had a habbit of adapting to the standard of their opposition, statistics this particular season show otherwise but I do see where you may be comimg from.

What we need to do and what success is all about is taking charge of your own being, confidently going about your way; doing your thing.

I personally think Gary Johnson is the greatest thing to happen to this Club in my 11 year regular attendence, possibly over sensationalised, possibly caught up in the current success, have to go with instinct though.

He's not playing games mate, he's not here to make up the numbers, he means business.

Thats what I reckon anyway.

In my many many years following the mighty reds I have pretty much seen it, done it and got a variety of tee shirts...

However I have felt for sometime that Mr Johnson is the winner we have so desperately craved for what seems a hundred years...Whilst it is clear some are yet to be convinced not helped by the fact that Marcus never really worked out, Mr Johnson has changed attitudes and mentalities at this club....

We have paid the highest wages in this division for as long as any one can remember and yet all we have achieved is abject mediocrity, this having been coupled with a policy of valuing imports above our own has anchored us to this god awful division...

We now have a decent mix of imports and rising stars whom we hope will underpin the development of the club and whilst Mr Johnson is not responsible personally for our academy (that one or two on this forum have made ridiculously negative statements about in the past) he has allowed the like of Williams and several on the fringe to push first team players for their shirts....

We are equiped to make it this season...barring an injury crisis, so now is the time to get behind the manager and the club

I often consider some of the other teams that have managed to get out of this division. Teams like Plymouth, Wigan, QPR, Colchester etc all shared a common theme for me & that was their aility to play good solid football. No real 'stars', just 11 men working hard for each other. Their standard was their standard and not really one that they adpted to suit.

Over the years, it's almost become more of a fear to watch City play struggling sides as (as you have already put it) they seem to have adapted their standard and not done themselves any favours. Whether this is complaicency, bad management or tactics I've yet to decide. Having been to a few away games this season, it would seem like we are still adapting standards to an extent. Brentford was an example for me. They were/are struggling and we should have looked to have taken 3 points yet the game was dull & lacked creation from both sides. It was not the type of City football I'm used to at AG. However, I firmly believe we should have walked away with at least a point at Forest based on our performance, thought I didn't get to go to Oldham this weekend, it sounded as though we dominated much as we did at Coventry & deserved what we got.

Hopefully, we are begining to not only find our standard but also not compromise it when facing teams of varying quality.
