Been looking at the Boro bord on the rivals site there fans are looking forward to this Saturday big time!

They are saying will be nice to visit an older ground with an old fashioned noisy hostile atmosphere! Its hows how long since we last played them if they think the gate regulalrly rocks!

Lets make sure we really do cause a noise and and not let them down!

Come on you reds!

Hmm, well thats opening a can of worms.

Making noise involves losing inhibitions, letting go, expressing passion. Not something City/Football's current fans seem particularly comfortable with.

Wasn't a problem at Forest & Coventry.

Although, there'll be plenty of room in the Boro End by the sound of it their fans have voted this one a miss

There's a sweeping statement. Are you saying that today's football fans are less passionate than, say, the fans of the Seventies?

Are you saying that people in general are less passionate than the seventies? If not, what do the passionate people do today? On-line gaming? Surfing? Porn websites? Sorry to be so profound but I'm not usually up this early and I'm all passionate for the online shop to open.

You seem to have overlooked the word 'expressing'.....passion.

Yes, the gentrification of the game in the last 15 years has unquestionably contributed to the stunted atmosphere in grounds, as a generalised stereo-type the middle classes do have a stiffer upper lip in regard to expressing emotion.

Have you ever been to a rave? This was an integral part of youth culture during the 90's and up to today, emotion vividy being demonstrated physically and vocally, I believe the phenomenon, and the wide introduction of the drug extasy coincided causally with the demise of atmosphere in Football grounds to a certain degree.

'Can of worms' like I say.

Nah, it had a huge impact on the hooligan scene, but it can not be attributed to the lack of atmoshphere, neither can 90's youth culture.

Interesting that you should use the word "gentrification". I think the lack of passion can be attributed to the increased attendance of women and children to football matches (the mummification of football perhaps). When there are children near me I will not swear; when there are not children near me I will swear. Whilst I accept that I should be able to express passion without swearing somehow it just feels better to rant and rave with a bit of effing and blinding.

On the whole, I prefer the greater attendance of women and children to the game even if it means a "gentrification". However, if I were younger I suppose I might have a different opinion.
