Guest HambrookRed Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=17661Haha Tom, you sure its this one...youve changed your mind so many times...
RedLionLad Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Looks like Preston took a bit of a gamble with £130,000.
JonPikeUK Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Here's some more details... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Smith_(footballer)
boadle Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I wish him well at the club, and hopefully no recurrences of this incident, from Wikipedia:"Sub the sub" incidentSmith is most renowned for the humiliating "sub the sub" incident which occurred during the Wales vs Northern Ireland World Cup qualifying match in September 2004. He was brought on as a substitute late in the game, but was only on the field for a short period of time before being substituted himself. The change was not directly tactical in nature but was attributed to his poor performance and the Northern Ireland manager's desire to waste some time towards the end of the match.
WesM Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I don't wish to be cynical or negative, but he's played in over 40 games and not scored a single goal anywhere??At 5'11, isn't a big old unit. Just wonder what he's going to bring to the table.Good luck to him.
pdgifford64 Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Hmm Career blighted by injuriesYet to score a goal as a pro as far as i can gatherBut...He hasn`t cost us anythingIts only a two month contract......and who knows, maybe GJ has pulled a master stroke. Only time will tell.I have to say though i have a horrible feeling of deja vu.That aside......Welcome Smudger, wish you the best of luck.PDG
deadratinmycider Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Not a single goal in his whole career to date! Just whats needed in a promotionpush!!I'm all for giving people a chance but, come on, why would you look at thatrecord and think "yes please, I 'll have some of that" !!!!
BCFCfan Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Preston paid £130k for that record. Must do something right.
Barrs Court Red Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 It's worth a gamble, if it pays off we'd have spent nothing. The thing is, with players like Plummer and Benyon do we REALLY need to sign this guy?Give the youngsters a chance.
Nibor Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Been training with us for a week so clearly GJ sees something he likes. Other players he's plucked from seeming obscurity have done well. Seems like a no lose situation, if it doesn't work out it's only a 2 month deal. Let's see how he does.

Seems like a no lose situation, if it doesn't work out it's only a 2 month deal. pdgifford64 Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I agree.Think this goes down as "Not exciting, but worth a try at litte cost"I wonder what Sharps record was before he joined S****horpe?I would wager it was a lot better than Smiths. Wouldn`t it be nice if he suddenly found that sort of quality though ?Ahh.....in my dreamsPDG

Port Said Red Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I agree.Think this goes down as "Not exciting, but worth a try at litte cost"I wonder what Sharps record was before he joined S****horpe?I agree BB, Johnson has once again taken the unorthodox approach of watching the guy play, have him train with the other players and make a decision based on that. I am amazed he doesn't look at the statistics like all the armchair managers....
Rednready Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 It's worth a gamble, if it pays off we'd have spent nothing. The thing is, with players like Plummer and Benyon do we REALLY need to sign this guy?Give the youngsters a chance. Andy Smith has a goal scoring record like Bass Savage, maybe they were Andy Savage and Bass Smith in the orphanage. If thats the best striking option from a list " as long as your arm", it would appear we need a qualified reader of lists, rather than a blind fold selection from a random arm list. I know, give the guy a chance.........he's 26, been around the clubs, gets injured, and done nothing to damage the back of the nets. Stunned !
Guest HambrookRed Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 to be fair, weve brought people in with fine records and its gone pear shaped ( MS for example ). Whats to say this guy finds some form here. Maybe he'll suit our type of football.......Theres so many factors surrounding scoring goals. Its not only about the player himself, but the team around him.I hope we give him more than 90 minutes to prove hes not a waste of space, i doubt it though.
Guest swindlered Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Not a single goal in his whole career to date! Just whats needed in a promotionpush!!I'm all for giving people a chance but, come on, why would you look at thatrecord and think "yes please, I 'll have some of that" !!!!57 goals in 97 appearances for Glentoran. Just over a goal every two games. Now you see why Preston took a punt and why he played for Northern Ireland whilst still a part-timer.Clearly a promising early career has been blighted by injury and two months gives GJ a chance to assess how much talent remains and whether the injuries are over. Good business.
Guest swindlered Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 And i'll just add, if you're going to slate a player at least do your research first.
Guest HambrookRed Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 And i'll just add, if you're going to slate a player at least do your research first.you go girl !
citytop22 Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 All for giving the guy a chance, but its hardly an inspirational signing to get me going.Perhaps GJ is an angel in disguise, giving players who have never scored a chance to open their account, look at Bas now scoring for fun, not sure about Barry Corr
bh_red Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 some very harsh comments so far, but yet typical.has scored in english football as of yet but has barely played a decent run of games in fairness due to injuries, possibly found the step up from Semi-Pro in Ireland tough, have looking at his record for Glentoran in ireland he scored 60 goals in 97 games so knows where the goal is without doubt.whether he can step up to this level remains to be seen but he's played a for games for NI and warrented Preston splashing out cash for him 2 months deal......it's well worth a shot!http://www.irishfa.com/squad-profiles/361/...-smith-forward/http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/northern_ireland/2868897.stmhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/northern_ireland/2868897.stm

Guest NEWTONRED66 Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Let's give the guy a chance and some encouragement , if he's given the opportunity to prove himself and bangs in a few you never know. We are not exactly scoring as a team at the moment, last decent score was the 3-0 Oldhan win. Might give us the kickstart up the old backside we are looking for. Also noted he can play wide, realise we have a few wide players already but is he left footed? Scores the winner at the gas next week everyones hero.

Guest HambrookRed Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I have some sort of faith in GJ, and i don't think he would consider bringing him in ( after watching him in training ) if he didnt think he could add something to the team. What would be the point in that. He obviously sees something there, as did preston and NI, lets just hope it materialises into some goals.

Guest CGS RED Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Bristol City are in a dire fight for promotion, I would hope with no expence being spared at this stage of the season. Fact, we have scored just 2 goals in our last 4 league games............. we need a striker, a striker !!! Brooker+ Showumni, is it, but when do we get them together, Jevons just does not have it . Andrews may have it, needs a run of games, at least he's scored more than Smith in the English Leagues. We needed a gold nugget, we have Brooker when available, and some scrap metal.
richwwtk Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 My wife could get a cap for NI if she was a paddy, he has all these injury and as we know from the past most players who get injured a lot keep picking them up it just the sheer lack of ambition that peas me off with this clubI don't think Arsenal were too keen on us getting Henry, but I'm sure we tried
Red under the bed Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Maybe he has been brought in to add some competition up front. Our present stikers are not really scoring for fun at the moment so maybe this might shake them up!
Guest HambrookRed Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Good luck to you AndyHe'll need it here.....

They got him from Cork playing in the Irish league which is worse than the NI one. I'm not saying he's going to be that great just that where he comes from and his career history is much, much less important than how he actually plays.

richwwtk Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Why are people comparing him to Bas Savage as though that's a bad thing?Bas was an invaluable player for us in his time here, contributing to a massive improvement in our results. If Smith has half the effect that Bas had then I will welcome him with open arms.
deadratinmycider Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 And i'll just add, if you're going to slate a player at least do your research first.I couldn't give a monkey's if he's scored 500 goals in Outer Mongolia or wherever it was, i'm looking at his record over the last few years.I'm not slating him, i'll give him a chance like i do all new signings but I want us out of this league and are you confident he'll get us out of it? Are you happy with this sort of signing?
Red Cloud Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 maybe he's mainly here to put pressure on the likes of Jevons to start performing!
Redhyde Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Well he's not as bad as the last Northern Irish international striker we signed....Hard working but looks technically inept as far as i've seen the guy. But that's at international level. Must be something in him, Billy Davies usually makes good striking signings. It does fit into GJ's striking policy. We don't really know who he is, and he doesn't score goals.Good luck to him, hopefully he'll have the non goal scoring impact that Bas had last year, in terms of putting momentum into the team and maybe score!
Guest HambrookRed Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I couldn't give a monkey's if he's scored 500 goals in Outer Mongolia or wherever itwas, i'm looking at his record over the last few years.I'm not slating him, i'll give him a chance like i do all new signings but I want usout of this league and are you confident he'll get us out of it? Are you happy withthis sort of signing?I'm happier with this when the other option is nobody. People seem to think that SL / GJ don't want players like Billy sharp / Leon Best. Sure they do, but sometimes they don't want to be here. I'm sure this is what GJ sees as the best AVAILABLE option so hes trying it. So to answer your question, yes i am happy with it.
Guest Topbuzz Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Not sure we are comparing him in a negative way just the goal record Hes gnna be small n pacy apparently
Guest ashtonyate Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 i'd also like to add....again...GJ has watched him at training, there must be something to it !!!!I wonder did he watch Bas Savage as well in training if we can pick up a player for free that can go straight into the first team squad that tell you a lot about the team sorry i am getting very depressed with City at the moment

Guest HambrookRed Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Perhaps we should give one of the Academy lads a chance instead!!Maybe he fears they wont be able to deal with the pressure at this crucial stage of the season. I mean, pretty much every game since Coventry at home has been labelled a massive game. The pressure will only increase with every game that passes, you could quite easily damage a confidence for life by including him now.
Guest BCFC Matthaus Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I text a Preston supporting friend of mine for his views on Andy Smith given that he is someone who has actually watched him play a few times. This was his short, and to the point reply....."Sorry buddy, a big pile of #### ..... I hope he plays better for you"
Guest ashtonyate Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 I'm really sorry, ive read this several times and i have no idea what your point is.BS was a very positive influence and was partially responsibile for a good run of results. My point is if he watch Bas no one in his right mind would have signed him he is the poorest play i have ever seen play for the City in my 50+years and I have seen some right Donkeys

bh_red Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Maybe he fears they wont be able to deal with the pressure at this crucial stage of the season. I mean, pretty much every game since Coventry at home has been labelled a massive game. The pressure will only increase with every game that passes, you could quite easily damage a confidence for life by including him now.spot on the last thing we should do is throw in a player with no experience into the first team yet and see if he sinks or swims.Andy Smith has spent the last couple of season with injury problems however prior to that scored goals for fun in Ireland, although not the highest level probably equal to that of the Conference/League 2, considering some of the names people have thrown around of players we should be signing we have brought in someone with a proven goal scoring record when fit, albeit at a lower level of football, fact is Johnson has watched him before when he was at Yeovil but got turned down by the player who understandably went to Preston instead, so Johnson knows what he is signing when the player is fit.He has 2 months to prove himself worthy of a first team place and if he gets one and takes his chances then we all benefit

mookey Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 OH DEAR, apart from Smith being ANOTHER player, which is undeniable, I haven't read one thing positive about this player. 22A Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Injury prone hey? Let's go back 40 years; Alan Dicks signed a forward who was not allowed to play for a month as he was in plaster! John Gally was that player. Let Smith play a few games before we decide if he's good enough for us or not please.

Also, regarding Barry Corr, Johnson came out in the paper and said he was exactly what we needed, and then proceeded to not play him. I'm just waiting for a similar quote from him tonight.Oh yes, and the new boy saying what a big club we are, and we should be in the Championship. No, you don't say.

Guest repro-red Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Never heard of the guy and by what i'm reading he doesn''t sound to hot, but tbh i was a bit wary with the signing of enoch and he's turned out to prove me wrong so willing to give the guy a chance.
