Ecko
Possibly the worst police force I have ever come across at a football match. Totally heavyhanded and they must of arrested atleast 15 City for no reason at all. Before the game, we got escorted from The Howards pub to the ground (took about 40 mins when should had taken 10 mins) Sheff Utd fans were giving City abuse throughout the escort and when one City said something back, he was quickly thrown to the floor and so was a younger lad (possibly his son?) for no reason at all. They proceded to smack his face onto the concreate before lifting him up and taking him away. Inside the ground, mulitple City fans were ejected because they jumped on the tarmac when we had scored. Pathetic and way over-handed, and people say we have the best police force in the world?!
Guest
The guy who got ejected after the offside goal did seem to be dealt with extremely harshly. That said the guy in the home stand to our right got chucked out for little other than flicking the bird back at us all!

I think there is a law that says they can, if they believe that you are liable to cause a public order offence, and that is obviously at their discretion. Yesterday, anybody who dared to step even close to the edge of the cordon was shoved back in or thrown to the ground and manhandled away. Finally, another point is that we were being filmed on camcorder the whole way to the ground, yet the police tried to stop us filming them on our phones. Wonder what the law states about that? Guest Red Dave
I know i'm going to be in a minority but I thought it was all handled in a sensible manner up at Sheffield. I have it on good authority that there has been a lot of trouble up there before recent games and to have an area segregated for our sole use makes good sense. You only need to see the way some of our 'followers' were behaving in the escort to understand why they do it....it was as usual particularly unpleaseant especially for those with children. Why people have the inability to listen with good grace to sensible orders & directions from someone who is there for your safety beggars belief. We were having friendly banter with the Police right along the route if you choose to try and escape the cordon to get 'involved' with the oppos fans you get what you deserve. By the way NickJ i saw you escaping the cordon with the old fella!

By the way NickJ i saw you escaping the cordon with the old fella! Yeah my dad! We walked on ahead and by the time the escort arrived we had queued for and eaten a very unhealthy but delicious triple decker burger. You are not necessarily in a minority Dave, I happen to agree that the policing overall was quite good. My point is whether the police can legally oblige you to leave the pub in a police escort. Surely there is something ironic about the police acting illegally, even if they consider it to be in the overall public interest? We were drinking in the Globe without a hint of trouble when the police demanded that everyone marched down to the Howard to join the escort. They were even guarding the back doors to ensure no-one could escape. I have mixed feelings on the issue, but my views are influenced by several instances this season of City fans being unfairly bossed around by the police. If I want to go somewhere, and I have done nothing wrong, it should be my choice, but on several ocassions this season I have found myself being coerced against my will into police escorts, whether on a coach or by foot. If the police consider you being escorted to the ground is for your own safety, they should make that clear.

EmersonsKev
I again recieved a positve impression of Sheff police. Myself and a mate arrived at train station was offered the pub over the road as a sanctury but decided that if the police were sending people in there that it would be busy and asked if we could just go to the ground, he said yes and pointed us in the direction of the ground. We ended up in a pub the Royal Standard nearer the ground full of City fans mixing freely with Sheff Utd fans with a good and friendly atmosphere free of police. On the way out I was expecting a Southampton forced escort but nothing materialised however there was a escort for those who wanted it.

When English fans get bothered abroard by police ie Moscow (England fans), Roma (Man Utd fans), Sevilla (Tottenham fans), the media are full of it, and the Government make inquiries. But when it happens in this country ie yesterday and I'm sure many grounds across the country every Saturday, our media, quiet as a churchmouse. Guest 0738parkway
The police are making a very dodgy situation for themselves in my opinion , twice this season i have got caught up in this so called bully boy escourt tactics and it has really pissed me off , so now what i do is sneak away from the police ,( u can do it if you try )i don't go anywhere near the police offered or the so called away pubs as this is how u come mobbed up by the police , yesterday i ended up in a club full of utd fans ( and there was some big lads in there i can tell you ) as soon as said ( excuse me me old babber n e chance of giving i a nice pint of cider ) the rest of the club looked at us , GULP , i thought time to die , but no need to worry they were good as gold and made us really welcome , but what I'm trying to say is that it could have turned nasty ,this is what could end up happening with fans avoiding the so called away pubs and mingling in other pubs mixing with the locals and they might not always be as accomadating as the sheffield lads we met saturday and things could be kicking off everywhere, oh and by the way only £1.60 a pint , we may have lost but great day, great performance , and great support , well done allround

madmax
Managed to get away from the Globe as some kids were winding up a guy we were with and I had my 15 year old nephew with me, so we didn't want any bother. Had a word with a copper outside and told him the story who asked his Sargent if we can leave and when I repeated the story, he said we can leave but stay away from pubs as the Sheffield fans wanted blood....so to speak! We walked around the corner and found a pub full off Sheffield Utd fans but families and older generation. It looked closed but when we got inside it was half empty and a great atmosphere. Had a nice time and was not bothered by anyone and likewise. Man, I'm getting old! We even stood and watched the convoy of city fans walk close by, which yes, I disagree with. I enjoyed the day and it was nice to see a great performance from the guys on the pitch, but have you seen so many ejected from the ground for little reason?!??!?!?!!?? Portland Bill
The Police - especially the Yorkshire Police - have got an appalling reputation for corruption. Their actions - especially during 1984/85 - against Trades Unionists are infamous to this day...... In fairness, a lot of the Police who treated the miners like scum were bought in from other areas including The Met
Mr Popodopolous
I do hope the club will follow this up, indeed how many games have our fans been lumped into one bracket away from home this season, any others?
tin
I again recieved a positve impression of Sheff police. Myself and a mate arrived at train station was offered the pub over the road as a sanctury but decided that if the police were sending people in there that it would be busy and asked if we could just go to the ground, he said yes and pointed us in the direction of the ground. We ended up in a pub the Royal Standard nearer the ground full of City fans mixing freely with Sheff Utd fans with a good and friendly atmosphere free of police. On the way out I was expecting a Southampton forced escort but nothing materialised however there was a escort for those who wanted it. Yep, that's where we wound up as well. Luckily, we went took a minibus up and didn't get herded around like you often do when you go on the train. No hint of trouble from fans or OB and everyone was enjoying a pint in the sunshine which is how it should be. The amount of times, particulary this season, that I've had an away day ruined by them is far too high. Made a pleasant change not to be involved with the shite the OB dish out for once. The only encounter we had with them is when we Trundle was walking past the Police Escort after the game and we wanted to go out and congratulate him on his performance but a copper just told us to get back in. Ecko
Yep, did I read somewhere Wolves there were issues, or was it Crystal Palace? Maybe it was neither though. Wolves definatly and Palace not as much. Also, Leicester.
tin
The Police breed their own problems. They want to provoke pissed up people and others into a reaction so they can nick them and fill their quotas. The real troublemakers attached to club's will do their business elsewhere, away from the eye of this lot, so to treat the rest of us like this at the majority of away games is going to cause a backlash one day. All it takes is one of them to go a tad too far and something will happen.
tin
Yep, did I read somewhere Wolves there were issues, or was it Crystal Palace? Maybe it was neither though. Wolves, Plymouth, Palace, QPR, Leicester, Cardiff and Sheff Utd (by the sounds of things) have all been marred by over zealous policing this season. That's far too many for my liking. 4eveREDDy
Not ONE policeman was charged with any criminal offence during that Miners' Strike despite there being thousands of witnesses, photographs and film footage showing the police acting with reckless yet co-ordinated violence. Margaret Thatcher's description of miners and their Union as "The Enemy Within" was basically a green light for the police to become a political army which had the task of dealing with this working class 'Enemy'. The 'Enemy' were battered senseless and terrorised whilst the top ranks of the police congratulated the lower ranks on a job well done as the truncheons crashed down on the skulls of British Miners. Our police would do well to remember that those Striking Miners were our fellow countrymen not our 'Enemy'. Most of the criminalty and brutality by the police against those Miners happened in Yorkshire. In a country with a fair Criminal Justice System it would probably be the leaders of the Yorkshire police from that time - now comfortable in retirement at taxpayers' (our) expense that would be prosecuted first. Beezey
Its not that the police can arrest for anything, anyone who has had the joy of reading a copy of Pace will know that an officer can arrest if he 'thinks' you may commit an offence. Basically he can say he believes that if you fail to join the escort into the ground you will go on to commit a public order offence. Trust me no copper signs up for football duty on a Saturday afternoon, not defending some of the more cocky police out there but the Majority just want the game to go off without a hitch and not get spat at or abused! I can promise you that most of them would rather be watching the game!!
bartolona
Luckily, we went took a minibus up and didn't get herded around like you often do when you go on the train. Our minibus was met by the police who then searched us all including women and kids looking for drugs and alcohol, they also had a look through our wallets and searched the bus. We've took a minibus to most match's this season, but with the over reaction of the police the last couple of weeks it doesn't seem worth the effort. Had a 14 mile escort into Stoke last week. Guest RSG3191
How hard would you like me to read it?. Complete and utter rubbish. They like to make a point at football matches of actually "getting in the way" just to try and antagonise people. If you havent seen that then you walk round with your eyes shut. The Police do NOT antagonise people! Its the FANS who do that to the Police! And, as you saying I walk around with my eyes shut, Crap! I am giving an opinion, you don't like it, don't read it!
