22A Posted July 1, 2010 Report Share Posted July 1, 2010 Following on from the <Stalwardts> thread; Tony Cook played in goal for City for a few years, Mike Gibson for (afaik) 9 years and Cashley was around for a similar length of time. In the last 30 years though a whole string of others (10 maybe) have played in goal for City. Other clubs too had the same goalie year after year. Look closely at playing squads from 30 years ago and you will find that clubs often had the same outfield players year after year. That all changed when freedom of contract and later the Bosman ruling was intoduced. There was a shift in power from the clubs to the players and any player loyalty when out the window with it. The higher salaries on offer these days also make it more attractive for players to move. Maybe they have all not been as consistant since Gibson, Cashley & Shaw etc more games these days which could lead to injuries which maybe left the 2 keepers battling it out to keep the shirt, could be a number of reasons.
