Willem II

Last Saturday it was our first away day of this season. And it was against Ajax Amsterdam. Last year we lost in Amsterdam with 5-0, being 4-0 behind and half time... That was quite frustrating. Still you support your team, thus once again in the bus towards Amsterdam to watch the match. I already said against some friends: being a supporter of Willem II you must love SM... Before you go, you already know that you are gonna be hit hard, and still you go...

Ajax won their first match against AZ quite comfortable with 0-3 last week, and although we got a draw I would be very happy with 1 point. Away games against Ajax are not that popular so we went with about 150 supporters towards Amsterdam. Last week the police in The Netherlands were on strike and it seemed that the police in Amsterdam was gathering their lost hours of working, since there were almost more police officers as supporters of Willem II in Amsterdam...  THe match itself: as expected Ajax was the better team on the pitch. Still Willem II played a lot better than they did last year and the defending went quite well. Nevertheless it was one of our defenders who was under pressure and passed the ball nicely to Ajax, from which a nice attack came and a score by head. 1-0. The rest of the first half was not really interesting untill a few minutes before the end when Willem II hit the cross bar. Half time: 1-0.

Second half Ajax was still the better team and with an Europa League game this week to play, they didn't really push but played comfortable trying to score once or twice extra. Unfortunately they managed to do so twice. First a beautiful kick from the 16 metres line and the second one with a shot over the keeper once again from around the 16 metres area. End result: 3-0. Losing against Ajax away isn't that end of the world and Willem II played a good match. What is worse is that our attacker Bruno Andrade broke his leg during this match. As a result we now have only three attackers left for the rest of the season who are also inexperienced in the age of 18 and 19. We must find some extra attackers on a very short time frame. Hopefully we will succeed, since our defence and midfield are strong and we gotta have people who finish it!!!!

Sunday an away game against AZ ALkmaar who ended third in the Eredivisie last year. Again a strong opponent, but (hopefully with some new attackers) we are in good faith and hope for at least 1 point... Especially since AZ has to play also Europa League this week and next week!!!

Sunday an away game against AZ Alkmaar who finished third last season... They only had 1 point out of two matches yet and after playing Europe League on Thursday we held our fingers crossed for one point.... Biggest problem for Willem II is at this moment the attack... With two players injured for at least half a year and a nr. 9 who is not in his best form we have troubles with scoring. This week we sold our biggest talent of the last 10 year to Ajax and he will stay on a loan basis at Willem II for the rest of this season and we got Andersen from Ajax on loan too (probably part of the deal with our talent sold). So at this time we have 5 players on loan from Ajax...

The match itself: we went with about 250 supporters to Alkmaar and saw AZ being the best team on the pitch in the first half. They had a lot of position changes during the matches (constantly) and our defence had troubles coping with that. Luckily our keeper is in good shape and he managed to keep the 0 on the scoreboard. On the other side we hade one kick on the cross bar, but were not able to score either. Half time: 0-0.

In the second half Willem II was getting better, also in coping with the position changes. But we were really missing a good nr. 9...Some small opportunities but we didn''t manage to score. Luckily AZ Alkmaar were not able to do so too and after quite a boring match the endresult was 0-0. We were happy with that extra point against a strong opponent.

This Friday a  home match against NEC Nijmegen who promoted back to the Eredivisie after being away for one year. This is a match which we can/should win. Hopefully with some extra new players in the attack...

Yes we have Zivkovic on loan. Perhaps he's a future world beater, but right now he is really, really out of shape.... He only looks to the ball, not where he can pass the ball to. When he is in front of the goal it looks like he is refusing to kick towards the goal.... Not the things you would like to see from your number 9..... For that reason he did not start in the first 11 last match...

Yes, we are now on place 16 of the Eredivisie. That means relegation area (play offs). Apologies for not putting that much updates in here the last couple of months. There were some personal circumstances which caused that.

Willem II is not in the flow they were in last year, but we lost lots of players too. Problem is the attack. We have many injured players and for that reason we are not able to score. Furthermore the players we have on loan are not performing as we hoped they would. Still, we played against 8 of the first 9 teams in the eredivisie (PSV EIndhoven we haven't played against yet, but with the support of the City fans coming over we hope for a good result). This weekend a home match against Excelsior Rotterdam. An important match, since they are one of the teams who could relegate too...

I will try to put a report of this match next week on here...
