Just a note to those who shot me down when I declared that City were one of the best payers in the First Division, from the horse's mouth;

" City increased my basic wage from what I was getting at Liverpool to € 240 a week "

Make of that what you will .

Very modern for those days to pay in euros?

His basic may have been higher, but I'd bet his bonus was lower and paid less frequently.

Norman Hunter said exactly the same thing about his wage increase on joining City in his biography.

He does go on to say at least at Leeds he didn't have to take his own kit home to wash after a game.

Maybe that's how we saved the money to pay for player wages?

I distinctly remember an article in the News of the World in 76 which publicised the alleged highest and average wages for the first division teams. As I recall only a few paid more. Everton, Spurs spring to mind but not many others.

Nuts absolutely nuts.

Very interesting, thanks for posting.  Being a bit picky, Jimmy Mann was never played at centre forward as PC seemed to remember.  I wonder if he was thinking of Paul Cheesley, who started at CF and scored the winner at Highbury but then got injured in the very next  game against Stoke.  Other than that Tom Ritchie played up front as well as Keith Fear, also I think Donnie Gillies played there as without Cheese we had no physical presence up front until Joe Royle was signed the next season.

I can't open the link unfortunately, but if it refers to 76/77 then Chris Garland did the business up front as I recall and had a major say in keeping us up?

Yeah you are right about Chris, but he didn't arrive until December 1976, and I just can't think why Peter seemed to think that Jimmy Mann played at CF when he clearly didn't - he always played central midfield.  It may be that in the days of no squad numbers Jimmy Mann took over the no 9 shirt from Paul Cheesely after he was injured.

Further thoughts on Peter Cormack, I seem to remember he made his debut at Tottenham and set up the winning goal for Keith Fear with about 5 minutes left.  Cue lots of Spurs fans in the "City" end looking slightly miffed and just as I was about to leap around my "minder" Mike (for those who remember he was the late "Ashtonyate" of this forum) who grappled me halfway to the ground so as not to alert the baying mob! Good times!!

Peter Cormack scored the only goal of my first ever City game - a penalty in a 1-0 win over Spurs - Chris Garland also scored with his fist but that was strangely disallowed.

Thanks for the memories.

Didn't Spurs go,in the East End that night ? , recall a few being escorted around the pitch

Can still see Cormack netting the pen at East End !!

That was the night we sent them down. Absolute carnage afterwards. I got a right good kicking off about four of them out by the old Winterstoke Road bus garage.

Happy days!

I don't recall, but I do remember people being escorted round the pitch in most games at the time.

The one I always remember is Man City at home. Think Chris scored the winner for us.

About thirty City suicide squad being dragged out of the away end by the cops and being applauded as they were escorted around the pitch.

Tell the snowflakes today and they wouldn't believe you.?

I seem to recall Mann wore the no 9 but played midfield and Cheesley no 10 playing as a striker through the promotion season and if you look at the Youtube of the Arsenal game at Highbury in 1976, the first one after the promotion season you will see the same.

The bad run Cormack refers to was after a good start we had a run of 7 defeats in 8 with 1 draw including 6 defeats on the trot, AD signed Norman Hunter and then shortly afterwards Cormack to add experience to a relatively young team, and as Cormack mentioned Chrissie Garland later. No transfer windows in those days.

Similar but not as bad as our run this season, except we had to wait until Jan 1st to sign the experience we needed.
