  1. While there's no doubt he's an athelte who might improve, I see a player that's neither a winger or striker. His two league goals were charge downs and he's consistently shown a lack of composure in key positions. Unlike late bloomers like Reid, Semenyo hasn't come through any academy from a young age and doesn't have that football brain. I thought the penny might have dropped in the Cup at Millwall, but we've seen nothing like that since. Personally, I would accept £3m+ for Semenyo in the current financial climate with several add-ons to ensure payment if he does develop. Those funds could be used to inject more quality over quantity back into the squad. If a deal could be done quickly and reinforcements could be in before the start of pre-season, it's a no-brainer for me.

  2. Only player we have that can shift the ball and run past players and has shown his eye for setting up teammates. Goals will come with more game time. How much does £3-5m get you nowadays in terms of getting creative players? unless its a shot at a fairly unknown foreign player, not a lot. English premium will prop him up value wise if he improves in the next season which I'm sure he will under NP if he buys in to what he wants. Pearson has already said don't get ahead of ourselves in terms of an instant rebuild and in these financial circumstances I would keep and wait and see how this young man improves in our side. This boy has big potential.

  3. I think he easily could surprise us but so much can happen in a player's career between 21 and 23/24. Best recent example I can think of is Saido Berahino. At Semenyo's age he was on the fringes of the England squad, being linked the various big Premier League clubs and looked like a fantastic talent. At 27 he's on the fringes of a Belgian football club. And then you've got Connor Wickham. At 21 he'd just come good at Sunderland and was being touted for a place in England's 2014 World Cup squad. Seven years and multiple injuries later he's probably out at Palace this season and may struggle to find even a Championship side who'll take a chance. I think Semenyo, if he stayed, could be a key player next season. But I also think - with every young player for a Championship club - it is a balance between keeping them and gambling on them fulfilling their potential or cashing in at the right moment and, if we get it wrong, we could find we've a player whose annoyed that his chance at the top flight has passed and who - sometimes through injuries and no fault of their own - suddenly finds it is too late to fulfil their potential. I'd rather we kept Semenyo that sold him but I also think that, if we got £5 million and a generous sell-on clause AND if he had his heart set on a Premier League move, there are very valid reasons why the club might choose to sell.

  5. You're bemused why we let go someone who had 12 months left on their contract, no intention of signing a new deal and as a club using a system which didn't involve wingers? Add being offered a couple of million at a time where the club had very limited income for months

  6. I completely disagree but there we are, that's life ? As others here have said, he's not actually a natural footballer. He's an athlete with a well developed physique for his age who happens to play football. So he's just not my type, I'm afraid.

  7. For 3 or 5 mil, I wouldn't entertain a sell. He isn't experienced enough to be bothering a Premier League first team, and he is a strong first half of next season to being worth 3 times as much. I'd roll the dice and go again.

  8. I'd take the money and reinvest in a targeted way personally. I'd prefer a smaller, more elite squad with clearly defined/understood roles and after a year of watching him I'm not entirely sure where he fits in for us. Is he going to play regularly? If not, how are we going to play or develop him? A decent player with potential to perhaps be very good, but I don't want us to hang on to a load of players like that around the squad on that chance personally. For every "but look at Bolaise" there are ten more people said until they were blue in the face on here they were the next big thing we should be playing every week who disappeared completely. Taking risks on youngsters goes both ways - letting them go as well as playing them. I hope we keep him and he does it for us but that's what I'd do if I were making the decisions!

  9. He's an athlete who can play football. But he is not a footballer. His timing and ball control is haphazard and his "reading" of the game is almost non existent. Sell while a Premier League club is daft enough to pay £5 million. And watch natural goal scorers like Sam Bell, Conway and Britton improving with match experience.

  10. If we rate him highly we should do a Peterborough. Tell Palace the asking price is £10m. If they stump it up, great. If not, he’s stays with us and potentially increases above that value.

  11. This is a difficult one. He has amazing pace and can turn whilst receiving the ball BUT his end product in passing and shooting is awful, he gives away some stupid free kicks and his marking from set pieces is poor. Normally I would think he could be coached but I have the feeling he lacks football intelligence and plays from instinct. Considering the rebuild we need, I would sell for £4 mil providing there were good sell and appearance kickers

  12. Am I the only person still not rating Yannick Bolasie then? I thought Palace got lucky that Everton paniced enough to splurge on him. I suppose if you get on the PL merry-go-round all the numbers start to look silly.
    4 points
  13. Palace interested apparently. Want him for £3m. We want £5m. Don't shoot the messenger ? And, in anticipation of the "hahaha bite their hands off for £3m" posts, I don't necessarily disagree. However, word of caution: we all said the same regarding one Yannick Bolasie.

  14. Spot on! The South Stand should be renamed “The Terry Cooper Stand” with immediate effect - Why not The Alan Dicks Stand, or even The Harry Thicket Stand, who are the only two managers to get us promoted to the top flight. In ADs case, I believe he is our longest serving manager. Harry Thicket took us to a cup final and to a runners up spot in the top flight. If you’re naming stands on merit, both men seem to be more deserving of recognition IMHO.

  15. Spot on! The South Stand should be renamed “The Terry Cooper Stand” with immediate effect - and, I’m gutted that Des Williams’ immense contribution and recognition seem to have been erased with the renaming of ‘his’ stand - I know a guy who is married to his granddaughter and the Williams family is very upset that his name has apparently been ‘dropped’ from our history. But, if you put that issue to one side, having four stands named Dolman, Atyeo, Lansdown and Cooper would not be too shabby in terms of reflecting people who seriously influenced the standing of our club ...

  16. Think I'd be happy to get £3m-£4m for Semenyo, give Louis Britton a go at the striker role but look to bring in a decent winger then with the monies. Think we dropped a bollock letting Elliason go as a provider.

  17. Take the money. The assessment that he might improve to score more than one goal in every 10 appearances is too uncertain. He might. He might not. Take the money.

  18. But did Toney go from scoring 1 or 2 a season to suddenly scoring 20? No. 8 in 14/15 (L2) 12 in 16/17 (L1) 12 in 17/18 (L1) 16 in 18/19 (L1) 24 in 19/20 (L1) 31 in 20/21 (Champ) There's a gradual increase there over the seasons you mention - granted Semenyo is younger but I'd be extremely surprised if he went from scoring 2 goals off his arse in around 40 appearances for us, to scoring 20 (our highest league scorer since Tammy) in one season. What makes you think he's capable of that exactly? You're expecting him to go from scoring 3 in L2 3 seasons ago, 2 in the Champ this year, then 20 in the Champ. We need to be realistic. I've heard this said so many times over the years about young players. People have a huge confirmation bias when it comes to them, forgetting all the ones who didn't make it they were backing. There's a reason you remember the names of them, but forget the other 3-5 young strikers at every club in L1 who haven't gone on to do what Toney has. I hope you're right of course and quoting me in a year! That'd make us all very happy.

  19. Lets just remember that Conway and Brittain have scored as many league goals in their combined minutes (200?) as Semenyo has in two years and were keeping him out of the side at the end of the season, appreciate there is more to his game than that but if the £5m can be used to sort out other area's of the team then I would be happy enough to see the likes of Brittain, Conway and Bell be blooded next season in a more settled team.

  20. We sell because we can get a better replacement, in the current market. Maybe more than one. Players who aren't learning on the job and who can fill a specific role immediately - what is Semenyo? A winger, a wide forward, a centre forward? Right here, right now we don't have the time to wait and found out, given the mess we're in. In a way, he would be a victim of our circumstances if we decided to sell him, although moving to the Premier League would hardly be a hardship. Personally, I'd sell because I find the idea of Semenyo ever scoring 10-15 goals fanciful in the extreme.

  21. I’d rather keep him and risk he doesn’t develop rather than sell him for 3m. 5m maybe but probably lowest I’d go. I’d be looking for 7.5m guaranteed. Pretty sure he has multiple years left on his deal. Risk it and if he scores 10-15 he is worth more than 3-5m even with a year left. He isn’t a great finisher at the minute and may never be. That said, he gets into good positions often and a bit more composure his goal return could easily go up. We have finally developed him into a championship player, so why sell him? We sell too early too often. Let’s build around some of these players for once.

  22. Composure...OK, in an unimpressive season for City, the guy has most assists out of anybody... so there is some end product there. My view is that he is a Nige type player. He likes players with pace and power. So, on balance, I think I'd be disappointed to lose Semenyo.

  23. You've been a member of this forum since 2004 so I look forward to you providing the links to posts where you said Bolasie would be a £25m player after leaving us, playing for one of the biggest clubs in England. Yours, in anticipation...

  24. 3-5 million seems very little money for a young player with so much potential. Having to get rid of this type of player before they’d had a chance to shine, just to fund a rebuild frustrates me especially when you look at how much we’ve wasted on our scattergun approach to buying players over the past few years.
    3 points
  25. Yes please. Goodbye, good luck. Not saying he won't have a career, he's just not what we need right here, right now.

  26. Given it is likely Nimes are going to get relegated, we might be able to buy him back - for a cut-price fee ?.

  27. If we sell both Janneh AND Semenyo I'd be slightly disappointed.

  28. I think the overall vibe from the forum is that at £4M then thats about right and will give NP more room elsewhere... Thing is with Sem have we really seen him reproduce that form from a year so back when playing for Newport in front of match day cameras and the pundits were drooling over him then... and i recall watching him those televised cup games when he terrorised M'boro and was it Leicester ? Martin Keown the pundit was drooling over how good he was.. But he was being used wider and deeper, getting the ball deep and then motoring...the thing stuck to him. He walked past players like they weren't there... Perhaps I feel he is still not being played to his strengths here. I for one hope he stays as he has another 2 years to run on his deal. Let him have a great season next year and that value might rocket still.

  30. It’s been an awful season and the one consolation is that kids like Semenyo have got more game time and experience then they would have expected. Having to take this season on the chin as some sort of youth team development experiment I thought the trade off was going to be the excitement of watching these players kick on. Clubs clearly think Semenyo has the potential, I’d like to see that developed here for at least another season.
    2 points
  31. He actually has 5 goals this season when you include the cup (50 total appearances) and 6 assists. He is young and the improvement from last season to this was huge. Add in how he can go past players and the number of shots he had that flashed just wide and I don't think it's that hard to see the potential. I would rather we kept him, but it really does depend who we want in. Same goes for Bentley - we may need to sell whoever we can get a decent fee for to free up funds for wages and some transfer fees. Which other players are we likely to get a few million for? However I think he could be huge next season.
    2 points
  32. Why would we sell him, he's a boy with so much potential, with a decent year of coaching under his belt he could be worth a lot more than 5m, who are we going to buy for 5m to replace him is what you have to ask yourself.
    2 points
  33. Not against selling him. Just not for 3m. We are a development club and Semenyo can progress more with us. So we’d be selling in a buyer’s market with an asset that will probably get better. We sell a year too early often. Bryan and Reid understandable. Kodjia and Webster we had leverage. Brentford were able to keep Watkins for more than a season. We need to have a better balance. All that said, we do need to keep an open mind this summer. Also, who is replacing him? Someone from lower league? What would Semenyo’s stats look like at a Peterborough? It is easy to say sell and get a cheaper and better replacement but in practice it is much much harder.

  34. Done deal, sold to Ipswich for £1 who will then sell him to Palace for £15m

  35. I reckon Semenyo will flourish under Nige. He’s pacy and if he can utilise that ability to its full benefit he’ll become quite an asset. He’s been learning from the likes of Wells and Martin on when to make runs and find space and work on his finishing. Next campaign could be his breakthrough season.

  36. So after a brief scan - my view is looks like Derby fouled up. 1. They had no Expert Evidence at the Disciplinary Committee. 2. The EFL's Expert was unchallenged on the key matters. As the Appeal Tribunal says - you need damn good reasons to ignore the expert, that's why they are there. As an aside Derby's press release whines that there was no accountant on the panel. However the panel is made up of one appointee from each party and an independently appointed chair. So Derby could have appointed an accountant if they so wished. As I suggested previously maybe they couldn't find one to agree with them!

  37. This. He is by no means guaranteed to continue improving with us or Palace for that matter.
    2 points
  38. Keep, he’s gone from a 3 or 4/10 player last season to a 5 or 6/10 this and that’s in a woeful performing team with the most embarrassing attacking threat ever seen in the Championship. Can you honestly see him not getting more goals/assists if he’s in a squad that creates 25/30% more chances next season? This year he was our outlet because nobody else was taking responsibility. I genuinely believe he’s been taken out of the team towards the end of this season due to what Pearson said about the detrimental effects suffered by the youngsters being overplayed.

  39. Let’s face it that for £3m we wouldn’t be able to get Szmodics from Peterborough. In fact they probably wouldn’t sell a striker for less than £5m now even to a Championship club so it’s a no from me. Unfortunately his performances and appearances seemed to drop off at the end of the season and I wondered if we had moved to a head-turned scenario with Antoine. It will all come down to how much we need to fund incomings and whether other than Kalas, Bents and Han there are any other marketable players. It also depends on Nigels view of him and his value going forward but as NP has already made clear players have to decide if they want to come on the journey or not and maybe Antoine doesn’t either have or want a place on our bus.

  40. On the flip side to my earlier post of ‘hold out for £10m’, if we did sell for, let’s say £4m, we could rebuild the side in the following manner : Scott Twine - compensation fee from Swindon. Matt Jay - circa £750k from Exeter. Stephen Humphrys - circa £600k-£1m from Rochdale. You’ve then rebuilt your whole front line with 3 players for the price of 1 and still £2m left to plough into the defence or midfield.

  42. I don't see it like that at all mate. Both of those players are beasts, with unorthodox talent. Regardless of ' manager' it could go either way imo. Outside of a covid year I reckon a Prem club would risk £10 m on him. Right now, it's an unknown quantity value wise. A true gamble. I'd edge on the side of keep him as I see potential, but if £10 m I'd sell. I think post covid we have to play hardball as you say.
    2 points
  43. I rate Semenyo. He's a great athlete - quick, strong, and powerful. He's very direct and dangerous with the ball at his feet. I think he's probably better in front of goal than many would give him credit for (any attacking player would have struggled for goals in our team this season). Given his age and the amount of potential he has, £3m - £5m seems like a pretty low fee. The big problem is that it's hard (for me at least) to know where the market is right now following COVID. What does £5m buy you right now? Is £5m this summer the equivalent of £10m in previous years? Frankly, I have no idea - but that makes it so difficult to get an understanding of what a "good fee" might be
    2 points
  44. I think both clubs are in the right ball-park, he’s in that £3-5m range imho. Few appearance based add-ons and a sell-on and I think you have to take it. I think there are players out there that will suit Nige’s team system better.
    2 points
  45. With the usual add ons . When a Prem club shows an interest it is nigh on impossible to refuse the player the chance to secure their future. So it looks like we’ve seen the last of AS in a City shirt. I had hoped we would benefit from a Bobby Reid style season from the lad next season.
    2 points
  46. Strange one isn't he? That goal against Millwall in the cup, i thought "wow he has the ability to do that". Plus the 5/6 assists that he got in the first half of the season. I didn't rate him at all, based on the evidence of the 19/20 season. But i thought i would have to reevaluate my thinking around him. However, second half of the season (like everyone else), his overall performances were not of the same standard. His two league goals consist of 2 x chasing down the keeper, and the ball coming off his ass. He's not a natural goalscorer, in the way that Conway and Britton have demonstrated for the under 23s, and first team. In that case, what sort of player is he? In the current climate £4-5m affords us the capability to get 3/4 other players in to help with the rebuild. I have no problem with him going for that figure. But a lot will depend on how we replace him. That will be the indication of whether we've learned from our previous mistakes; and that the new processes/talent id process is working in the way we hope it will.
    1 point
  47. 3-5m probably is about right regarding him as a player rn. However why not just hang on see if he develops more next season then potentially sell him on for maybe 3/4x times that amount. I’m sure the players out of contract frees up a lot of wages in regards to signing others that will suit Nige’s system. Don’t need to sell surely

  49. For a young player who cost us nothing. And whilst he has potential if we sold him to palace for 4 million I wouldn’t be to disappointed. Especially seeing the next crop of youngsters coming through.

  50. Add to that, that Bristol Sport were chucking money at a racing driver and badminton side at one point, I can't believe the investment required for the womens side would have been that great to even get them as a mid table side. The WSLs profile is going to take off next season and sadly we've missed the boat. I really feel for Matt Beard and his squad tonight as they couldn't ever be faulted for effort but sadly just not up to the required standards to stay in the league Sky struggling again
