Stoke_Gifford_Red
Not just Coventry, I've heard the same about other stations including one near Old Trafford. As Tomarse says, the same may happen for Ashton Gate is it is unlikely any new station will be able to cope with the crowds unless special trains are put on. Talk about a private company providing ammunition for those who want to re-nationalise. Without wishing to get too technical, there is only small short term demand for new diesel trains. There is increasing electrification of the railways - it is ridiculous to run diesel trains on electrified lines so diesel trains will be "cascaded" down. Chappers
So the tax payer should spend billions instead?Taxpayers do, subsidy is far higher now in real terms as private companies are inefficient and want profits. Everything is so disjointed the administration and bureaucracy is huge, and it's one huge mess. Games are Tuesday Eve or Saturday, so spare commuter stock should be available. RedRock
So the tax payer should spend billions instead? Yes. Why not, if the private sector has an epic fail in providing what customers want and society thinks is highly beneficial to the common good then they should clear off. Anyhow, with our massively expanding population the tax revenues will be there to fund it. Got to be some benefits to us from this population boom or is it just a case we cram as many people on to this small island just to watch how our transport networks implode? Don't worry, electrification of the railways south-west of Bristol won't happen for at least another hundred years. We'll have the diesels down here assuming we've any rail track left to run them on. Admin phantom Posted August 25, 2015 Admin Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 There is a shortfall of rolling stock all across the country. That's because they are hundreds of carriages and engines rotting away in an old raf camp as the government won't lease them to rail companies Let's be honest if Temple Meads was built where Ashton Gate station is planned to go that would struggle with the numbers too
Stoke_Gifford_Red
There is a shortfall of rolling stock all across the country. Whilst some new trains are being purchased, these are all electric as diesel are considered old technology. Unfortunately, the amount of electrification planned is much less than expected pre-May 2015 and therefore the number of new trains (and spare diesel trains) is much less. This is caused by the "record investment in the railways" and "record levels of electrification" which were much touted by the coalition prior to the election turning out to be unachievable, so multiple upgrades were cancelled (mostly in the North of England). This was known by the government departments in early 2015, and without wishing to turn this thread political, either the Conservatives and Lib-Dems lied by failing to mention the cuts to come or were incompetent in not knowing of billion pound projects needing to be cut. 22A
Electric v diesel is a result of a fragmented industry.Network Rail; "The train operators are buying diesels, so we won't electrify any further".Train operators; "Network Rail aren't electrifying more, so we'll buy more diesels".It's only because of a push from the very top the route to Paddington is being electrified. 1960maaan
So the tax payer should spend billions instead? we are already paying billions in subsidies which is handed on to shareholders in dividends. http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/apr/16/rail-operators-200m-dividends-subsidy
The Bard
So the tax payer should spend billions instead? we already do,subsidising profits of foreign owned companies. The truth is that our rail service is more expensive and worse than it was when publicly owned. Before it was sold off it was the victim of a massive smear campaign through the media. At the time it was one of the better rail services in Europe through any fair measurement.
pongo88
You laugh but they'll probably say this if they ever get a stop at Ashton Gate..Not probably, it will be definitely. A new station at Ashton Gate will be of limited benefit to City, as regardless of whichever rail operating company runs the service on the Portishead line, there will be no spare capacity to provide extra trains on a match day. British Rail was very efficient compared to other countries. The other countries ran a better service, but only because of the vastly greater government subsidies. If BR had been given the same level of subsidy, the service in this country would have been superb.
