Bryan 100% going....

It's not a shirt for a centre half, ffs. Give it to a defensive midfielder. Generally couldn't give a **** who wears what, but Flint and Fonts wearing 4 :grr:

Webster can have 3 if Bryan is off

3 is a full back number.

Go through all English sides when the seson has started and see how many CBs and how many CMs have #4.

Said on here several weeks back that Bryan will go, however I now think Germany is his preference. Suppose we will know soon enough.

No2, Alonso. Was No1.  Fillol the keeper no5.

Charlton Athletic did it in 93-94, Stuart Balmer wore no.1..in midfield!

I think the Netherlands numbered the '74 squad alphabetically with the exception of Cruyff. In 78 they numbered the surviving members of 74 with the same numbers and everyone else had 'normal' numbers (goalkeeper Jongblooed (sp?) wore 8 again)

Italy had an interesting one, with players allocated numbers alphabetically based on position-keepers were 1, 12, 22 (though often the actual number 1 would wear the 1 shirt, hence Zenga in 1990) defenders 2-8/9, midfielders 9/10-18 and strikers 18/19-21. Exceptions were allowed, Baggio wore 10 in 94. By 98 they had largely left this numbering policy.

That was before squad numbers and when everyone played 442. A midfielder HAD to take a number now used for defenders.

Steve Bruce wore number 4 for United. I've always thought of 4 and 6 as CB numbers.

If Joe will not sign the club must sell him!!

Joe has the opertuneaty to become a club legend by staying and being part of the squad that takes us to the promised land!

The problem is the riches that he could get and the signing on fee from another club. He is probably see this as possible his only chance to get his big move.

I for one would love him to stay as a lad that has come through the system to first team is alway special to us fans. Plus he’s a dam good player when on his game.

The closer we get to the deadline the fee may raise but it may not be able to get a replacement or use the cash in this window.

No one HAD to take a particular number. Squad numbers or not, 4 should be banned for centre backs

Too bad you won't ever see teams play all 1-11 in a game anymore. If you wanna see a CM wearing #4 so bad go watch non-league instead.

How do you deal with teams that don't play 442 as well? What about when we've played 352 in the past?

I don't like centre backs wearing 4. I don't care about formations, 1 to 11 or non league football to any great degree. But thanks for your concern

Think if setup right it could be pretty decent with cover for injuries and suspensions- but the quantity creates a problem in itself, because what's our best team- what's our best shape?

With that many options...tinkering becomes highly tempting (and possible).

Doesn't count. As we all now know :fear:

And your namesake could wear any God damn number he wanted!

Here’s Ardiles wearing number 1.... although this pic could have been from the 1982 World Cup? I think Argentina did the alphabetical thing then as well....but I seem to remember they made an exception so Maradona could wear 10! What a diva!

If we took on some part-timers say 3 days a week and alternate Saturdays, then we could have players sharing the same number. It would never get confusing during games because they would never work on the same day together. Similarly, we could allow players to have a holiday or two during the season and get in temporary players to fill the void and they would be allotted the same number as the vacationer. Perhaps we can just hire two full-time professionals to fill in for the two players who are on holiday at any one time and thus have multiple numbers. This would be a good source of revenue as the club could run a lottery pre-season in which supporters guess the sequence of numbers a particular fill in player will wear during the season. Anyone who gets 6 in a row gets free use of an executive box for a year. Anyone who gets 5 out of 6 and then the bonus shirt gets a brick in the Wedlock Wall.

This is the germ of a good idea. We could be the first club to give players 4 weeks paid holiday during the season, on condition that if they are ever injured they use part of their holiday, or all of it, there and then. At present, if a player is injured/suspended other clubs rub their hands in glee. Like, Leeds United fans will be buoyed if they hear that the City team facing them will be without Pack and COD due to injury. However, if they heard that City were without Pack and COD because they were on holiday, it would really freak them out and get into their heads. They would automatically feel inferior because we were so strong we can allow players to have in season holidays.

Of course, if a player gets injured during a match, this will have to be disguised to make it look like he is going off on holiday early to beat the traffic. For instance, stretcher bearers can come on to the pitch carrying a suitcase and also a pair of shades to apply to the stricken player. The fans can do our bit by calling out, 'Have a nice time,' and, 'send us a postcard,' etc as the player is stretchered off.

I find it hilarious how grown men fret so much about what numbered shirt they play in.

Multi-national superstars with brands, like CR7 or Beckham, I understand, they have marketing commitments, but Championship footballers etc. I just don't get the big deal personally.

wen i played outfield I always played in a number 4 shirt because it was my lucky number, I spent most of my outfield games on the left wing or left back despite being right footed,

the age of positions having numbers has long gone, its down to what number a player wants these days and its normally based on seniority

Completely understand that aspect of it Monkeh, and that certain players have preferences, I just don't get why they make such a huge deal about it (fans as well).

I've never actually said that, have I?

Just to it's exceptionally clear for all (I mean you, I think everyone else has cottoned on now) 4 is a number for a tough tackling midfielder as back in the 70s, the era I grew up watching. It's completely irrelevant with the use of squad numbers now

As discussed, I have an aversion to 14, 23 and 32 as well. I have no idea why. I really like 3, 33 and 39 and would be happy for a centre back to wear any of them

If you'd like a full list from 1 to 99 with my thoughts please let me know

I'm not putting them into a 352 or a 532 though. That's obviously your thing, you can work out who goes where

During the 70's Liverpool had Kennedy and a couple of others who played attacking midfield with 5 on their backs, Donnie Gillies played up front for us wearing the number 2. Hardly a new thing really.

Didn't Ronnie Whelan wear 5 as well at times? Seem to remember that

And to completely disprove my point about tough tackling midfielders wearing 4, I'm pretty sure I remember Hoddle wearing it at the start of his Tottenham career. Wouldn't have fancied a 50/50 with him

I think we can both agree we'd like our goalkeeper number to be between #2-11 and an outfield player to have #1.
