Tonks55
I guess we have to be realistic so probably it will be someone who has an affinity to the club (i.e. prepared to look past the dogs breakfast we have/are making) and is affordable. Who does that leave? Keith Curle (Experienced at lower levels) Mark Robins (Has done a good job at Coventry in difficult circumstances) Terry Connor (Probably not as only just joined McCarthy at Cardiff) Paul Tisdale (Did a good job at Exeter but not at the Gas (well many of us would argue that he was doing just 'dandy' at the Gas. The reality is that even Paul Daniels would struggle at the Mem.) Are there any other candidates that are ex City? My choice would be Mark Robins as he is used to working under adversity and would leap at the chance to manage a club with our facilities compared to having to 'lend' Birmingham city's facilities! (Many will disagree - please tell me why?) As much as I would prefer a bigger manager I don't think Lansdown will tear up the blueprint of a management team he is working to (i.e. Ashton) nor will he shell out fortunes to attract a top manager when even a top manager might fail under the current circumstances. bcfcnick
Geoff Twentyman mentioned that he knew Paul Cook well from his playing days and he is the type of character who would want complete control. I think everyone surmised that as well. In short Geoff was just abou saying that Paul Cook wouldn't work under Mark Ashton or anyone who influenced or dictated recruitment. I wouldn't be surprised if GT hadn't actually spoken with Cook at the time or sometime after the recruitment process. Paul Cook seems to have a great eye for a player and recruits well with a balanced squad plan in mind. So if Steve Lansdown wants success and someone who will do well with his money with player recruitment then Cook looks the man to fulfil that role. It does mean SL has to be bold enough to move Mark Ashton on or MA has to relinquish any influence in the transfer market. I don't think MA is the type of person to relinquish any control whatsoever. I am sure SL is bold enough to make that decision (to move MA on) but is he astute enough to realise it's needed? Seemingly not unfortunately. I really wanted Dean to do well and thought he could but, even allowing for injuries, I got that wrong. I think it goes beyond injuries and we look a poor team and teams with lesser resources make us look poor. It's rarely fun to watch at all even when we scrape through with a win. He's also got too much of a liking for recruiting seasoned past their sell by date injury prone pros. Dean is obviously a very decent and likeable man and will no doubt make a good number two as the 'good cop' in a supporting coaching or assistant manager role. I hope if he does go that he gets a good payout and a decent coaching job soon after. He's still young and I don't doubt he will have a decent coaching career working up from lower leagues. We don't need a stable character as such. The club is so stable it's become stale. We need someone to shake things up. Yes, and even Lansdown himself admitted we were "stale" when he talked to TalkSport radio and said we needed a "breath of fresh air." Then he appointed LJ's assistant. You have to wonder about the quality and the diversity of thinking that goes on currently at Bristol City. If it is just one man and his ideas and his way or the heighway, and after 20 years we are still miles off reaching the PL, then it's SL and his thinking and his judgement that is what needs shaking up. He is the common denominator running through two decades of underwhelming performance on the pitch.

Ashley Williams in a higher line, 2 in CM, 2 + Palmer- list goes on... I think we have better players than recent performances have shown of late. As in we're less than the sum of our parts- we're not even equalling them, never mind exceeding them which is what managers often need to do. As to your second post, certainly doesn't seem like they've been leaving everything on the pitch most weeks of late. Thought performance vs Brentford and in some respects Sheffield United far exceeded vs Cardiff, Derby or Watford and the question is why?

I've got a soft spot for the Cowley's. I saw them nearly get Braintree into the League, a small town in Essex punching massively above their weight. Did well at Lincoln, promotion and started to change their style when they moved to Huddersfield. They are detailed and forward thinking and I think if they get the right club will do well. Now, they seemed to do OK at Huddersfield, kept them up but then got sacked. From what I heard they wanted complete control over recruitment, and I see a sticking point there. They are TV friendly and articulate, they don't strike me as trouble but with your board, more over with Ashton I don't see a fit.

If someone saw potential in us and a good chance to get promoted, I think we could get a real good coach. I don't see (from the new mans perspective) it as impossible. Most of these men would be very confident in themselves and would probably back themselves to change minds. From the other side, I see Ashley as a bit of a Billy Big Spuds and he might feel threatened by someone experienced that could actually do the job everybody wants. What would need in that scenario is Lansdown to act as a real leader and set boundaries for Ashton. It's the only way we actually do progress IMO. It needs SL to realise the club set up is broken, it needs change from the top. He surely must realise that after all this time it's not working. I'm conflicted on Pearson. Definitely helped lay some foundations but post Derby he's not been particularly in demand. Think he was out before end of September for on and off pitch reasons. Post then he's not been particularly in demand has he? Watford I thought his sacking was harsh, but would he have got anything from final two v Man City and Arsenal? Difficult to say. He actually might have been sacked by Leicester in February 2015 before getting reinstated you know, he also broke FFP on the way up, or his club did to be more accurate. In a way that wouldn't be possible today. A similar example albeit at a lower level might be Cotts. Sterling work for us, yet how many Championship jobs has he been seriously linked with. With respect to Pearson, could he be out of step? Football is ever changing, is fluid- maybe he needs to change to adapt to clubs.

And you want me to run everything by you before I make any decision despite you having a background in football that doesn’t back up your power trip? I can make this club successful, do you want me to just do it or do you want to stand in the way to justify your inflated salary? I’d hate to think that is true, but somehow I think it is - yet sooooo many on here just don’t want the successful, proven guys at our club - you know who you are ... remember the established young lady on here who said a few years ago she’d push everyone in the river by the Cumberland Basin if they wanted Warnock as manager?! ... people like Bruce, McCarthy, Hughton, Warnock will get you out of the championship and into the Premier League - it doesn’t mean you have to then stick with them as managers when you are up there - lovely, nice guys like Millen, McInnes, SOD, Cotterill, LJ, Holden will do ok as championship managers, but they won’t take us to the next level... ...just as football players all find their level and realise that is the level they will reach and no higher, so do managers, they just don’t tell their bosses - I have ranted and raved and pushed for Warnock on here for years, but I’ve always said that he isn’t a premier league manager - I’ve always said we should just use him to get us up and out of this division - I said the same on here about Cotterill, as soon as he promoted us with that amazing 2014/2015 season I said we should say ‘cheers Steve, here’s your payoff, thanks for an amazing season but we are gonna go with a gaffer who has a proven track record at this new level’ - we need to be more ruthless! 1. They might not want to come 2. I wouldn't want Colin here, either. Vile man, vile football.
