Maradonnas shirt from 1986 v ENGLAND

Recommended Posts

There was a really interesting piece (outside of the Hand of God stuff) on BBC Breakfast this morning about the shirt.

Apparently, Argentinas first few games they wore a cotton shirt and the players were uncomfortable. Had no alternate materials so the kitman headed out to Mexico City and purchased a new kit, the one worn vs England. Just off the peg plain blue shirts in a Sports shop. Badges were sewn on (and they were the “old” Argentina badges as that’s all they had) and the numbers were glittery, because the only ones they had were made for American Football.

Maradona allegedly chose the blue shirt they used over another option. It wasn’t worn as a kit again.

Assume it’s true as the bloke from the National football museum was there.

Doug from Classic Football Shirts knows his stuff. I’m inclined to believe it

I've known this for a while...explained here. https://museumofjerseys.com/2020/06/22/great-one-offs-argentina-1986/

Same for France in 1978 WC...who wore FC Kimberly green and white striped shirt, a local team, as an alternative. Different times.

Look at Admiral kits of England in the 70s...hand sewn badges and numbers, different styles, no consistency. All hand sewn. All over the place.

Anyone remember airtex and the yellow and blue away kit England wore in the early 70s as an away kit? It was gorgeous.

I never knew England played in yellow

Back when I was a kid, in a set of those football cards with the chewing gum that lost its flavour after 3 seconds, I had a Kevin Keegan in a yellow England kit.

It wasn’t that game though, but a friendly in the US.

Very short lived. Admiral toyed with a yellow and also light blue third kit for England 1982. The yellow version would have been stunning imo. The 78 kit would also have looked great as a third kit in yellow.

I second that mate. Burn it after as many England fans as possible have had the opportunity to defecate and urinate on it. Lovely job. Never been able to understand why top footballers still say he was one of the greatest as though they can ignore his blatant cheating. I would argue most England fans believe he was (god rest his soul) the biggest cheating b.....d in the history of sport and don't get me started on Thierry Henri.

Hope you agree with me Darkside

Is this a wind up?  I don’t want to get whooshed!

I did read something saying that Maradonna's family were claiming it wasn't his shirt (I assume they are skint and have another one!) but Hodge could prove it by the specific details. Great pay day for him fair play but probably a lawsuit heading his way...

England wore the yellow and blue kit when losing that World Cup Qualifier two nil in Poland in 1973. Reckon that was the death knell for it. Plus I think Alan Ball got sent off, so it was a night of infamy. But it is a great pity, as I agree, it was a lovely looking kit.
