  1. At the Sunderland game there was a tribute to Stoney Garnett in the 76th minute. He was a remarkable character and it was right that his passing was acknowledged. I was glad of the opportunity to remember a true City fan who made so many of us smile. I am wondering whether these tributes should take place during the game.

A tribute during play, especially as late in the game as the 76th minute, in a competitive game can lead to unintended consequences. I have seen games where a tribute early in the game where teams “ease off” until the minute has passed. I don’t think there is a code of conduct that both teams should do anything other than make best efforts but you can see some players are influenced in their approach by the stadium atmosphere. Had there been a goal or key incident it would have, one way or another, led to mixed emotions. There didn’t seem to be a coordinated big screen tribute during the game, there were separate tributes to a number of fans (pre match or half time) who had passed away during the summer break. I don’t find fault with the club in this respect. The Sunderland fans joined in but a minute is a long time. Ball in play time was 55 minutes and 7 seconds in the Premier League last season, most fans would prefer to avoid any reduction in that time or any period of play where there is any easing off for the purpose of a tribute.

My preference would have been a single tribute before the game. The players can join in. The big screen can add to the experience. Next best would be to have “in play” tributes in the first half.

  2. RIP …. A real character, I did not know him personally but seeing him at so many away games over the years it seemed that he always spread a little happiness. I remember Fulham A in recent times when a hard tackle came in during the first minute and he screamed out “all game ref, he’s been doing it all game”.

Our home shirt in the future should be the opposite of this year’s away shirt - red with a white stripe. Apart from looking good, it sets us apart. Over the years there are many teams with red shirts that are little different from ours- Liverpool, Man U Notts Forest Aberdeen etc , ( Arsenal are a bit different with the white sleeves) but the white stripe will set us apart. Everyone will know that it is a Bristol City shirt,

Do you mean a red shirt with a black and white stripe?

Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby is brilliant, much better than the film. I also remember Only A Game? by Eamonn Dunphy from the 1970s which I thought was well written.

Nice chapter about Malcolm McDonalds debut for Arsenal against Bristol City, pre match he bragged about scoring five against the country bumpkins. Paul Cheesley’s goal secured us a 0-1 win in our first game in the top flight for ages, August 76, heatwave, Wurzels at number one, only green grass in the country was at the football grounds…. Happy Days

    Full kit looks really smart

The photos of the shorts don’t make it clear whether there is a pocket (there is stitching on the right hand side) or string ties to keep them up. Previous years have had no pocket but do have string ties. Does anyone know?

  6. Accounting made simple. Equity is a good thing to have. It represents the amount by which assets exceed liabilities. Debt is the opposite, it is a liability to be repaid at a future date. Depending on the interest rate the club can find itself in a debt trap (think Man United) that enriches the owners. SL owns the club because he cares about it with a passion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Be careful what you wish for. Owners that convert debt to equity are fine by me.

Yeah I think so too. But I don’t understand the glass houses bit. Are we not allowed to pile into this fan just because we have had fans do it as well?

This incident after a play off win comes to mind. Unacceptable seems to be the consensus verdict from the posters, whoever is involved.

  8. Interesting piece in the Times today. 8 players have had a single touch in the Premier League, since Opta stats started in 03-04. Kieran Agard played for Everton vs Chelsea, December 2009 in a 3-3 draw.

seven other players had just the one touch; Andrew Barrowman, Christian Negoyai (managed to get sent off), Anthony Grant, Arturo Lupoli, Louis Lang, Marcella Trotta and Rafael Camacho.

Agard scored 15 times in his 64 games with City

  9. If the referee can tell the VAR that he is uncertain or did not see it as he would have liked then VAR do not have the higher burden of establishing a clear and obvious error. The evidence seems to be very strong but stops short of fully conclusive. If the ref says nothing to VAR they likely do not award a penalty. If he says he would like their standalone opinion it is in all probability a penalty. They are still humans and humans make mistakes, plenty of them. Mind you given that it is Man City I think they are looking for a “clean catch” to use a cricket term before changing the decision.

  10. It is a long shot but you never know ..... Are there any Club Wembley members out there who might want to help? Active members can access the resale market for the Carabao Cup final.

I am a City fan. In the 80's I lived in Liverpool and my friends like to meet at Wembley finals, I am looking for two tickets. Even the  LFC season ticket holders are struggling as it is a 1 to 1:6 lottery. One of my friends missed out. Message me if you think you might be able to help. Thanks in advamce

It was all a bit unreal how quickly things went downhill. I still blame the Board for the financial mismanagement after a coup in which Robert Hobbs (the Chairman) was overthrown after overseeing our successful seasons in Div 1. The new board got us relegated and then to make things worse sacking Alan Dicks due to a poor start in Div 2, if we'd kept him I think he could have turned things around. By the time we got to the Newport match we were at rock bottom and the board managed to focus on the AG8 as the issue to obscure their own failings.

Rock bottom was probably away at Rochdale in December 82. 0-1 defeat after a late, late goal saw us rooted in 92nd just three years after being in the running for a place in Europe. Things could only get better.
