Probaly best we have not been awarded one.

Why some footballers 'choke' during penalty shootouts: Brain scans reveal those who miss are overthinking the consequences of missing the shot

    • A penalty is one of the most pressurised individual events in all of sport
    • There have been many high-profile misses such as Southgate at Euro '96
    • Researchers found some people activate the pre-frontal cortex in their brain
    • This is responsible for long-term thinking and leads to nerves and apprehension
    • People who trigger this region of their brain are more likely to fluff their attempt

Sounds like me playing golf - just can't get Chris waddle and pizzas out of my head.....

Whilst I understand the gist of your post, running around a lot doesn't mean anything, unless it's constructive and positive.

Someone may run a lot because they are constantly correcting their positioning.

You have to use your brain just as much as your legs to read a game.

Some of the very top players will stand still on occasion, and let others run, freeing up space for themselves.

Even moving towards where the referee is stood is a clever move.

Of those I've seen first hand, Messi and Modric were / are exceptional at that - plus very short bursts from that space, creating goals...

Yeah, a very important role but not necessarily one that gets the plaudits or credit. A handful and I mean a handful of elite ones aside- Makelele, Busquets, Kante and probably a few more assorted ones. Not many do though!

    To become a Premier club.

    Agreed, but a huge punt.

A CFO who has worked with Premier League and Championship sides once told me that 'unless you are happy to burn £15m per annum of your own money, stay away from Championship clubs'...

    Seems reasonable....

I remember being in the video room in the Dug Out in 1980 watching I will follow by U2, said to my mates "best band in the world" ?

Saw both U2 and Simple Minds in concert in 1985.

Still can't decide who was better.

Actually, I think Big Country were ?

Further to your reply 're" if you can't hit the fairway on the first at st Andrews.." I give you Ian Baker Finch, an Aussie golfer good enough to WIN the Open in 1991 but in 1995 famously hooked it out of bounds on the very same 1st hole of his first round of the Open @St Andrews. I can see it now? poor bloke and apparently he was fine practising but just got the yips when it mattered...

Worth a watch even if you don't like golf,  very gentle, sweet film.

The first time I played there Will, it was blowing a gale and OOB right was definitely in play.... Solid driver, then good 8 iron just over the burn.... For perspective, we drove the 18th...

The second time I played it, I dinked a 3 iron down there, then chipped over the Swilcan Burn from about 5 yards short of it.... Crazy place.

Maurice Flitcroft - my favourite pub quiz question ? I have read the book, and a shame they didn't mention his calamitous high diving act at holiday camps when he was young - more Eddie the Eagle than Seve....

    Sounds about right. ??

I don't play anymore, sadly no time. However I intend to start again in the future.

I started playing as a junior at Chipping Sodbury. Team golf. Then continued through adulthood.

Then moved around a bit, became member at Stockwood Vale, Saltford, Players and Kendleshire.

Played team golf in Bristol and District and in Somerset over the years. Captained team at Somerset Bowl final etc etc. Won Club Championships.

Played lots of individual tournaments as well.

I had too many interests. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Then Skiing took over. Which I turned pro at.

My only regret in life is I didn't turn pro at golf.  I got asked to be assistant pro at Sodbury under Terry Mercer when still a teenager. Went to college instead.

Would never have made it as a touring pro...both my cousin's were, and they were better than me...and they struggled.

But as a teaching Club pro...I reckon I could have achieved that back in the day.

    Good memories.

I'd hack it round now with my arthritic hands. ?

I played a lot at Sodding Chipbury in BDGL during the late 80's, early 90's. Think we had a League Finals day there one year?

Sounds a similar story - had the same assistant offers at Worlebury & WSMGC, but realised I wasn't a good enough player so decided to play for fun....

I'm still mates with Scott Readman, who worked with Terry Mercer at some point - do you know him?

Member at Burnham for some 20 odd years, and still have a bit of involvement with Somerset Golf (Over 35's).

Youngest daughter is playing now though, so that keeps me interested now she's starting to hit it past me!

It's the most arse clenching feeling ever.

Like you...played ok standard at competitive golf

But when they announce your name on the tee, everyone watching goes quiet, all eyes on you...most wanting you to duff it.

You can hear your heart beat...just getting it on the fairway is a relief ??

It may be wide, but you definitely start thinking about it..... ? I had an 8ft putt for birdie on 17, never tried so hard on a putt in all my life, and left it 2 inches short..... ?

Where do you play spudski? Did you ever play Bristol & District / County?

I've not played Troon yet but I'm at Royal Birkdale at the end of the month.....

I always think that first tee shot is so easy! You have to be pretty bad to miss the fairway.

I've played to an ok standard over many years, playing a fair amount of competitive golf.

I can tell you I have never been as nervous as I have been on that first tee..... Shaking so much, I struggled to get the ball on the tee!

What was yer last game? And why you haven't been arsed since?

Mine: Man City in the cup. Previous to that, Man Utd. Been busy, tbf. Won't go again until Kasey "Ken" Palmer is bombed out.

    You?

Bristol vs Exeter rugby was the last visit, Hull game before that.
    Can be arsed ??
