We did Porto a few years ago. Cant comment on trips outside the city but would recommend a port tasting tour, and this football club near the main bridge is a great viewpoint for a beer https://maps.app.goo.gl/LV2e8hRmgqcU8AKh6,

Also second @petehinton advice to do a walking tour. We always do a free one (you do tip the guide) and ask for recommendations.

Loved the tiles on the front of buildings as well. Came back wanting to do ours!

Just next to the medieval wall, lovely spot although I've yet to visit the club, will check it out. Another place with a great view over the bridge and river is this new bar in the maze of steps and alleys down from the cathedral @PHILINFRANCE:

My wife and I are off to Porto for the last week of May.

We have booked a very comfortable central hotel, but are intending to explore outside the town centre itself.

Does anybody on here, @Porto Red perhaps, have any recommendations such as trips to nearby beaches/islands?

We are familiar with, and love, the local cuisine, but any restaurant recommendations would be appreciated.

    Many Thanks in advance.

Hi Phil, I take it you've already done the centre on previous visits then?

I should probably update my user name as I haven't lived in Porto since 2012 although I do go there fairly regularly (next trip I have planned is in July to see The Cult, although it'd be unusual if I didn't also go sometime between now and then, anyway I digress) - I'm up in the mountains now.

You should definitely do a Douro river cruise if you haven't before, they are available for all budgets and of varying duration, the spectacular scenery of the terraced Douro valley, home of the great vineyards of port wine fame.

Beaches, well you need go no further than Matosinhos in the Northern suburbs - take the metro from the centre and go to Praia de Matosinhos, a vast expanse of golden sands with plenty of beachfront bars. The area is the traditional fishing port so you can eat fresh seafood anywhere if that's your thing.

In the centre I often find myself lunching here, good Portuguese fare at reasonable rates and right next to Estação São Bento (although can be a bit of a nightmare getting to it currently due to the ongoing works for the subway extension):

I was literally going to say the same thing. I don’t think there’s a post from RR that someone doesn’t pop up and make some bullying scathing comments!
Even perfectly measured comments from him come under attack. It’s not like he’s ever particularly controversial.
Only yesterday when he was describing, on another thread, the state of the men’s toilets of old, he was referred to as having a “perverted fantasy”!!!  It didn’t even make sense.
It doesn’t sit well with me. Just bullying.

I find your thought process valid and you're clearly a decent person. Having said that, let's re-evaluate once you've had to put up with him for 20 years.

(See rest of thread for corRobboration.)

He's come under some stick in recent weeks, but that's the best performance I've seen from us since the Lee Johnson days. Brilliant from Manning and co.

Played a game plan to perfection, kept our shape and discipline brilliantly, counter attacked with pace and took our chances superbly.

Southampton hadn't lost since September and we took them apart, what a performance. Superb from all involved.

Want to agree, but I guess you missed 2014/15, that was exhilarating

  5. Couldn't agree more, came here to post a Hayden thread myself. Absolutely outstanding tonight in defence and attack. The Bristol City left back charm continues, imagine having him and Pring competing.

When LM talks about "not getting to high and not getting too low" he is talking (in plain English terms) about trying maintain an optimal level of arousal.

So he's not saying players should be emotionless as thisnresukts in 'under-arousal' and a widening of attention or attending to thingd that are outside the field of focus. Manning (being a very intelligent coach) clearly understands this. Equally he means players should not be 'over-aroused' as this is equally dangerous to performance levels and can result in a narrowing of attention or attending to the wrong things.

Not sure we've consistently found the magic sweet spot yet under LM mind but there have been signs of it.

First time I've heard "arousal" in a football context since LJ

  7. Slightly odd the apparent obsession with our away stats from a supposed Coventry fan. This is not something we remotely have a complex about (unlike the blue few), we are well aware that we don't travel in great numbers these days to anything other than marquee occasions, largely because we've been floating in mid table in this division for several millennia now and there's nothing new to see.

Your American equivalent says "that's what she said'"

Which apparently is the modern and much less expressive version of "as the actress said to the bishop". Everything is getting shitter and less meaningful now, we were the lucky last ones. My work colleagues call me boomer, little do they know (about basically everything, but particularly about how less in depth and valid their world view is, a worrying retrograde)

I think it was that he's fighting the Mexican Luis Nery next. Nery is a hate figure in Japanese boxing, so they're all desperate for Inoue to batter him!

He pissed hot when absolutely nuking Shinsuke Yamanaka in Tokyo, then came in massively overweight when ordered to rematch him. Yamananka is a hero over there and they're furious with Nery's cheating and disrespect.

It'll have to be in the States though, Nery is banned from fighting in Japan forever!

Ok, thanks Stortz, interesting history, I'll keep an eye on that from now.
