I'm not sure that how your experience 30 years ago has much bearing on how the US currently feels about football. Obviously football is never going to be as big as the major sports over there, but you only have to look at the attendances in the MLS (and NWSL) to see how much the sport has grown in recent times. There will definitely be a big (relatively speaking) interest in this game, and the tournament as a whole.
