If you were around then (& I was), not really.

This was the year of Heysel, the Millwall riot at Luton on TV. Pretty sure our one at Reading was the year before.

Football was seen as violent, an almost exclusively male pursuit in crumbling, dangerous stadia. Definitely not cool.

A lot of the 80s was like this.

Whatever any of us think about the Premiership, Sky’s influence & the rest, the rose tinted nostalgia for that time is to a great extent, misplaced.

The Bradford City fire (11/5/85) was just over 2 weeks before Heysel (28/5), 2 horrific and tragic events.  I am pretty sure that we had one of our worst home matches for violence - yes Millwall - only a few weeks earlier.  As you say, violence and dangerous stadia. Grim times.

I and others , have made the comparison between this Ipswich run and ours of 2007 - 2008 . Promotion followed by a good start, confidence peaking and doing much better than expected.
Because of that I went back and had a look at the run in, man it's even worse than I remembered . TBH I wasn't going as much around then , picking and choosing games , it's a long story , but I kept an eye on it all .
After getting in a great position in Feb / March , we tanked big time .

Through Feb , after a 3-0 loss at QPR , we went unbeaten until March 11th. 3 draws doesn't seem too bad after a decent run , 16 points from 24 or 2PPG.

Table looking good , and then the wheels fell off.

Hard to look at that table and realise we didn't finish top 2 . 7 points from the last 8 games is n amazing run for a team top of the table.
Over the season 15 out of 20 games we won, was by the odd goal , which explains poor GD and shows we were just getting over the line a lot of the time .

3rd and a point behind 2nd after the draw with Wolves , all be it WBA had a game in hand , still in touch with the autos travelling to Stoke .
I watched the Stoke game in the Rising Sun , McCombe stands out in the memory for their 2nd.

When you look at it , Wembley wasn't the missed opportunity it was that run in.

    Screenshot2024-03-06at11_38_30.png.b1137852474ca369490f92ddde4da1d1.png

Over a period of about 7 weeks WBA went from being 5 points behind , to 7 points ahead .
Not sure we will ever be in that position again , what could have been.

It's also worth noting that, if we had beaten Stoke away, we would have finished 2nd, assuming that every other  result had remained the same.  The problem with that assumption is would we have breezed  past Preston on the final day if a  place in the Premier  League was up for grabs?

  3. I don't think many fans remember quite how bad Paul Cheesley was when he joined us from Norwich for 30k ln 1973. He seemed slow, couldn't really hold the ball up or affect the game in any way. What a transformation for season 75/76 when his goals, hold up play and presence in and around the box spearheaded our promotion season followed by the opening day winner at Highbury.  By the time he got that knee injury against Stoke he was always going to be a club legend, buy he was really poor in his first season, and yes, the fans let him know it..

To save you pain on the day, I would suggest you speak to City before Saturday as only tickets in Google/Apple Wallet will scan you into the ground.

Thanks for that, I think someone mentioned that they had been sent a ticket on an e-mail to print at home, so will hopefully be sorted, at least for the PNE game.

  5. I wonder if someone can help with something that is niggling me (hopefully needlessly).

I received my e-mail with the digital ticket. I have never really used the google wallet but have 2 debit cards in it.  I did what seemed to be the "right" thing and added the ticket to my wallet, but it just never appeared there.  I have gone back to this a few times and tried to add the ticket to my wallet and it just says "already added".  Does anyone know if I can just show the ticket from the e-mail when I turn up on Saturday.  The club have not let me have a physical ticket as I have a smartphone so that route has been blocked off!

Thanks for in advanced for any good advice.

Saw Queen supporting Mott the Hoople at the Colston,  Roxy Music supporting Hawkwind at the Locarno and The Eagles supporting Neil Young at the Hippodrome, all around '72/'73.

Went to that Mott the Hoople concert.  Loads of people went to the bar before the interval just to get away from the noisy support band, who seemed so out of date compared to the Bowie-esque MTH.  For Queen to go from that, to producing stuff such as The Seven Seas of Rye/Killer Queen/Bohemian Rhapsody in a couple of years was astonishing.

I could have also claimed to have seen Genesis supporting Lindisfarne and Van Der Graaf Generator in 1972 at the CH.  Only problem was that they broke down on the motorway.  As people were mainly there to see the top 2 on the bill (weird combination, but that was how it was with multiple line ups)  a big cheer went up when we were told we wouldn't have to sit through Genesis!  And all for 30 new pence!

Middlesex must be one of the worst T20 sides in history of tournament this year ?

Went to the game today and, although Glos were efficient, Middlesex looked like they had lost before they had started.  Their body language was dire. I have seen plenty of teams that are a bit thin on talent, but to go into  what was a winnable game for them (given that we beat them in the last over of the away match last week and that could have gone either way) and not show any sign of fight or positivity says it all.

Jim Harvey, had a spell here I recall, he always looked a good player

Yes he was, until he joined us! IIRC he looked nothing like the player we thought we had signed, only played a handful of games (just checked, not even a handful - 3 games).  We do seem to attract more than our fair share of these types of players.

  9. I am pretty sure the announcer said  there would be "a period of silence which will be ended by the Referee's whistle" which was actually what happened, although the "period of silence" only lasted about 2 seconds.  I distinctly remember the "period of silence" being stated as I thought that it was unusual, as I am sure that I had read somewhere (the OS?) that there would be one minute's silence.

  10. Great win for Glos against Sussex.  The commentator on the official stream said there was a world-wide viewing audience of over 100,000 towards the end of the game, which is mind-boggling for a County game.  I guess this shows how global the game is now, also no doubt a few taking a punt on the various outcomes!

It would’ve but I thought he scored at the other end (same half as Byfield scored early on)? Or has my memory gone?!

No, it was definitely in the Atyeo, it is one of those goals that is etched into my brain.  Saints had a corner at the Wedlock/East End/South End and being a goal down and into stoppage time, their keeper went up for it.  Basso got hold of it and passed it to Ivan, who "passed" it past every player on the pitch and just ran and ran!

Ah that goal v Saints when he ran half the length of the pitch, c2009

More than two-thirds the length, I recall.

When, with the entire half of the pitch and an open goal at his dipsosal and his fantastic pace, which got him into that position in the first place, he almost ended up running it down the tunnel in the Atyeo!. Which would have been the ultimate in game management...

Revisionist history had no limits it seems. Amazing how the facts (sic) of the matter appear in the hands of those who weren't around at the time.

City owe nothing to 'The 8', unless that is you wanted City to go bust, which is nearly where they took the club. 'The 8' looked only after themselves, for which I don't blame them, but lest not forget the players immediately became free agents and later were paid around half of the outstanding balance on their contracts, so it's not as though they were left high and dry. Bristol Dockers who were being shafted at the time weren't so fortunate. Kids singing their stupid song might start by asking themselves if 'The 8' were such heroes then why were their testimonials so poorly attended? Answer, although one or two genuinely had been playing heroes most weren't and all their attitudes at screwing as much as possible out of the club didn't go down well with fans.

At the time the players, Merrick in particular, were filmed saying they'd never set foot in AG ever again. For several years Merrick also wasn't shy in describing his thoughts on the club's treatment of him, as many a person who's worked in the building trade will attest. How times (and facts) change.

And no, if there's a card on my seat dream on if you think it'll be held aloft, as those like me who thought my beloved club all but gone recall how the hard the PFA had to work to talk the players out of their demands.

City's sad chapter should be buried, not celebrated.

As someone who was around at the time, watched them in Division 4,bought the shares etc., I totally agree with you.  Although 6 of them were City heroes having been part of the promotion winning team/ top flight journey, they were also responsible for the abysmal performances that saw us drop down the leagues.  If this had happened these days, when we no longer have to rely on a drip-feed from the local media who held the view that the 8 were martyrs, they would have been run out of town for the shocking and abysmal performaces they were putting in.

The contracts were not their fault, and obviously no-one likes to see people lose their jobs, but if they had been worth the money we were paying them they would have been snapped up by rival clubs.

  14. Am I missing something here?  I got this book 3 years ago for a Xmas present.. It is very good especially for those of us who were there for the top flight seasons. Anyone know if it has been updated or is just being re-launched?  I know they were unable to locate Brian McNeill from the players that played in the 1st Division, so I was wondering if it had been updated with any info on him, or any more recent interviews from the other players/backroom team.
