Are you sure you can travel from a tier 3 area to a tier 1 area to go on holiday? Apologies if I’ve got this wrong but there is a lot of confusion surrounding these tiers and what we can and can’t do - over a year ago I booked a week in Cornwall for this Christmas but it’s looking likely that I won’t be able to go ... I don’t think you can just leave Bristol to go on the lash in Cornwall after the lockdown closes and we go into tiers - as draconian as that sounds ...

You can travel to our County, but you must abide by the rules of the Tier you reside in. Tier 3 cannot go in a pub, Tier 2 can order a meal but must leave when you have eaten it.

My point again Bristol City/R*vers.  BRISTOL !

It might be a small point, but as the original response was to a 1982 jibe it was called for.

During 1883 there was a Bristol Rover Bicycle Club from Stapleton, even before Eastville Rovers, so in 1899 they were named after a cycling club.

  3. Regarding the 1939 re-election to the Third League [South], on May 3rd 1939 Evening Post, the Bristol Rovers FC were facing finacial ruin and needed £2000.00 to prevent the club folding. The Chairman Mr Fred Ashmead said the amount was needed to pay staff and players thro' the summer and one person had promised £500 but the rest was req'd soon. The following days saw public donations but they had not reached the amount.

Then, on the 22nd May 1939 Western Morning News, Rovers were compelled to sell two of their best Players, forward Curran and left back Millar to................Bristol City!

Fred Ashman was so grateful for City to aid them that way and saw them able to survive thro' the close season with less anxiety.

So history may foretell the future of Rovers again........you never know.

  4. 'Pat on starting his new job on the building site, was told to collect his things from the store.

At the store he asked for 'one wellington boot and a pair of gloves'

The storeman said 'Why one boot?

Pat said 'I've got to work in one foot of water'

Liverpool Cathedral in Liverpool is fantastic as a modern example of Scouse religious architecture.

The Catholics really upped their game when they moved to the new building in the seventies.

I believe that old Cathedrals are just not up to the demands of modern religion even though the atmosphere in these edifices is superior.

Major, the chandelier in this Cathedral was made in Bristol by Gardiner Sons & Co Ltd at their Midland Works and the whole device was erected in the T A Hall, Old Market for the workers and staff to see before dismantling and delivery. As a draughtsman there, the sight was remarkable for something this ornate to be seen.

  6. Apparently times don't seem to change over the years.

Am always looking up items in old newspapers for my genealogy project and came across this.

Extract from Daily Mirror 19th October 1945

    Section Sports Mirror Page 4

''Local boys make good angle appears to Bristol Rovers. Unwilling to enter soaring transfer mart, Rovers set themselves to comb home-town junior leagues.

Result-six new pros: Vic Lambden, Randall Watkin, George Petherbridge, Ronald Davis, Arthur Hobbs Roy Jennings......

Old Uncle Tom Cobley an' all ''

Even in 1945 poor old Rovers were in for it.

  7. Remember April 1958 away at Fulham when we were 3-0 at half time and still won 4-3! Best atmosphere ever with their fans, plenty of feeling good. Seem to remember finishing up at 'Dirty Dicks' near Liverpool Street Station?

My late Father was watching a reserves game at the 'Gate' and everyone thought a mistake had been made with the half time score when it was put up.

    Good old days.

I think todays game will have a similar scoreline, hopefully in our favour.
