  1. May be related to the England win. Or it could be that the City's Women should have a decent chance of gaining promotion back to the Premier League. With the relegated side being Birmingham, they will probably not be able to bounce straight back. Although we did lose to Saints in FA Cup last season so need to beat them for a good start.
  2. I would expect that the population of Southend would not be aware of the connection with certain events and people nearer home. Perhaps it might be one for the Moderators to close it down. @Moderator
  3. What you have said about your father is similar to my father's looking after me as a young boy and on through the First Division days until he left us in 1987. He started while Billy Wedlock was an England player. You and I were provided with a lifetime of memories by our dads. How fortunate we were. Best wishes to you and family.
  4. A dreadful disease at such a young age and with a young family. My best wishes for a complete recovery to Nick and to his family that they can stay strong al of the time.
  5. Well said! Non premier League football in this country has always been very different to most other countries in that quality of football and attendances are vastly superior to the majority of other countries. England's Premier League cannot begin to realise that they would not exist if the leagues below were turned into regional, part time professional, meaningless games in local grounds with minimal capacity.
  6. Cheerful sod! Let's make him totally miserable by 17.00 hrs on coming Saturday.
  7. I am reminding all again about one of City's best defenders a long time ago. Gordon Part made his debut in 1957 but did not become a regular first choice until 1964/5 when he was approaching 25 years. I'm not saying Vyner will replicate his City career but let's just remind ourselves that players make the grade at various ages from 16 to 25/26. Vardy at Leicester was around that age when he blossomed, so why not Vyner? Nigel would not be selecting him if he thought he isn't good enough!
  8. So far so good but when points are at stake, it becomes a different matter as you said. We, the fans will expect everything from unbeaten after 46 games to October and still waiting for our first win. The squad however, appear to be confident without a loss in any of the warm ups, so I'm looking cautiously forward at the moment.
  9. Sorry people but a poor attempt by me at sarcasm. Glad that he's gone as he so so laid back, that it's a miracle he can even move on the pitch.
  10. Yet another with talent bites the Ashton Gate dust!
  11. As Frank Sinatra once said " He couldn't hit a bull in the fanny with a big bag of rice!" PS. Fanny is American slang for backside.
  12. Both goals had a big influence from Nakhi Wells. Still working hard with the young lads getting the benefit.
  13. Thanks @spudski. Not at my brightest after grouting a tiled floor in my conservatory.
  14. What a load of crap! Leave that sort of function for business people. I cannot see that it will help footballers to train and play any better than an ass kicking or verbal bollocking from manager or chief coach!
  15. Kalas hasn't played yet in any friendly. So at a guess, he'll not be ready for first league games.
  16. Some do not understand the purpose of this match. Should we return to the good old days when the City first team played the reserve team in the only public pre-season match that was allowed by the FA and Football League. I also remember pre season games when we won all of them and then went to Novenber before we won a match. Or lost all the pre-season friendlies and won a pile of games at the start of the season.
  17. Dolman is about 7,000. Lansdown approx 10,500 to 11,000.
  18. I've just spent two weeks holiday in Portsmouth. For me it is a place based on war and killing. All the museums dwell heavily on warships and their history. Hearing a guide gloating that thousands of French POW's had dug the soil and sand to create the deep harbour in appalling conditions, made me feel very uncomfortable. GB has treated enemies in the same way as possibly every other nation on Earth so we can hardly criticise others. The museum has little of note except for one section that was closed. Got chatting to a man who appeared to be in charge and of course when he determined that I am Bristolian, the talk led to football. I mentioned that I'd seen the Portsmouth side in 1952 at Cardiff City, the one that had win the First Division in 1949 and again a year later, he took me to the closed area which contained lots of items that covered that period and also their 1939 FA Cup Final win, leading to them holding the cup for seven years.
  19. Gordon Spiring 1938-39 with 4 appearances. Son Peter Spiring 1969-73.
