  1. Immediate thoughts after that performance are generally positive. We looked far more composed and comfortable with the ball throughout, although failing to be very creative with possession. we certainly look to be trying to play the ball forward at every opportunity and much quicker than in the past and it was a solid team performance. We didn’t seem to be under any massive threat from Southampton. The two pivotal moments were a world class strike at the start of the second half and a marvelous save from their keeper when we looked like scoring towards the end of the first half. Hopefully Naismith’s injury is nothing too serious, although I suspect it’s a reoccurrence of his recent hamstring issue. On balance a draw tonight would’ve been the right result, but we were undone by a truly excellent strike. Overall a tidy performance, which reinforced our weaknesses upfront in my opinion. Bell and Conway both worked hard, but never really troubled Southampton. We didn’t create a chance in the second half as far as I can remember. Great noise from the traveling fans who were a credit to the club.

Their relegation was confirmed on 13 May when they lost 2-0 at home to Fulham, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/southampton St Mary’s Stadium guide: https://footballgroundguide.com/leagues/england/premier-league/st-marys-stadium-southampton.html They are top of the form table (we are 12th) with four wins and two draws from their last six games and are currently (ahead of Tuesday nights games ) 4th in the table with 31 points (6 points more than us.) The last time we played them was September 2013 when we lost 2-0 in the League Cup 3rd round. Our starting line up that game was: Elliot Parish Brendan Moloney Derrick Williams Aden Flint Joe Bryan Bobby Decordova-Reid Nicky Shorey Jay Emmanuel-Thomas Marlon Pack Stephen McLaughlin Scott Wagstaff Subs: Marlon Harwood Neil Kilkenny Sam Baldock Head-to-head record Won: 16 Lost: 25 Drawn: 7 Officials Referee: Keith Stroud Assistants: Matthew Smith and Mark Pottage Fourth official: Gavin Ward In November 2022 they parted company with manager Ralph Hasenhüttl after four years, he was replaced by Nathan Jones. On 12 February 2023, Jones was sacked following a disappointing run of results during which the Saints lost seven out of eight league matches, leaving them bottom of the Premier League. After having served as caretaker manager in a 1–0 victory over Chelsea, Rubén Sellés, who had joined Southampton as first-team lead coach in June 2022, was announced as Jones's replacement on a contract until the end of the 22/23 season. Sellés was unable to save the Saints' season, and the team were relegated. On 24 May 2023, they confirmed that they would not renew the contract of Sellés when it expired at the end of the season. On 21 June 2023, the club appointed Russell Martin as manager on a three-year contract. Southampton stuff There are eight other ‘Southamptons’ in the world It may be one of a kind to those who live in the Hampshire city, but there are actually nine places across the world that are named ‘Southampton’. Amazingly, six of those are located in North America - with ‘Southamptons’ in Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Utah and Virginia. You’ll also find two ‘Southamptons’ in Canada, in New Brunswick and Ontario. The distance from Southampton, UK, to Southampton in New York is around 3,345 miles as the crow flies. Southampton was the original departure point for the Mayflower The Pilgrims left Southampton on 5 August, 1620 to embark on their historic transatlantic voyage. They were on two ships - the iconic Mayflower and the lesser-known Speedwell - and boarded on the south coast of England set for a new life in America. The Speedwell had leaked on her voyage from Holland but was able to be repaired at Southampton’s extensive ship building facilities near the port’s West Quay. The fact that the city was a thriving seaport also meant it had everything the Pilgrims needed to buy to prepare themselves for the journey. However, after departing Southampton, the Speedwell soon took on water again - thought to be either because she carried too much sail, straining her timbers, or the result of sabotage by the reluctant crew - and both ships were diverted to Dartmouth, in Devon. The Mayflower was not the only famous ship to sail out of Southampton The Pilgrims may have endured a treacherous transatlantic crossing, but they fared better than another famous vessel which attempted a similar journey almost three centuries later. The RMS Titanic etched its name into the history books when the grand cruise liner struck an iceberg en route to New York on 14 April, 1912 and sank – killing more than 1,500 people. Though the ship was built in Belfast and registered in Liverpool, the Titanic’s final departure point was Southampton. Southampton Old Bowling Green is the worlds oldest Bowling Green, it was first used in 1299. Southampton was the birthplace of cruise holidays with P&O first introducing a passenger service in 1844. The ship departed from Southampton and headed to the Mediterranean, soon Alexandria in Egypt and Constantinople (Istanbul) in Turkey were added due to the rise in popularity of Orientalism, a 19th-century fascination with all things 'exotic'. Renowned author Jane Austen had a strong connection to Southampton. It was her childhood home, and she lived there for a significant part of her life. The iconic Spitfire aircraft, crucial in the Battle of Britain during World War II, was designed and developed in Southampton by Supermarine Aviation Works. 5. And breath. Excellent result but we so nearly shot ourselves in the foot with two poor goals conceded in quick succession. Think that’s only Carrick’s eighth defeat while in charge at Boro. TGH goal was a bit special btw

  7. Last season it finished 2-2 we were two up with goals from Bell and Cornick (with his first City goal) https://twitter.com/BristolCity/status/1645481006420328449?s=20 Highlights: https://youtu.be/dYpB7VvKzJg LM pre match comments: https://www.bcfc.co.uk/video/interviews/manning-previews-boro-at-home/ and https://www.bcfc.co.uk/video/manning-meets-the-press-ahead-of-middlesbrough/ Carrick pre-match: https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/2023/november/23/pre-/ They started this season poorly at one point they sat rock bottom of the table, winless in seven games. They then managed four consecutive league wins and things started to look up. They have won four, lost one and drawn one of their last six games, beating Leicester in their last game. Michael Carrick enjoyed a good first season at the helm last season when they finished fourth with 75 points, they were beaten 1-0 on aggregate by Coventry in the play offs. Our ex-manager played 139 times for them. They signed defender Rav van den Berg from Dutch Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle on a four-year deal, for an undisclosed fee. The 18-year-old made his debut for the Bluefingers in May 2021, and has since played 32 senior games, scoring once. They also signed Central Coast Mariners winger Sam Silvera and ex-Melbourne City goalkeeper Tom Glover on three-year deals. They signed Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Seny Dieng for an undisclosed fee. Plus goalkeeper Jamie Jones on a one-year deal, following his departure from League One side Wigan Athletic earlier this month. In mid August they signed striker Emmanuel Latte Lath from Italian club Atalanta, and defender Lukas Engel from Danish Superliga side Silkeborg, both on four-year contracts. On the eve of deadline day they signed midfielders Lewis O'Brien and Sam Greenwood on loan from Nottingham Forest and Leeds for the season. Then on deadline day they signed Sierra Leone international Alex Bangura from Dutch side SC Cambuur on a four-year deal. They sold striker Chuba Akpom to Dutch giants Ajax in a deal worth up to 14.3m euros (£12.2m). Head-to-head record Won: 28 Lost: 35 Drawn: 24 They have only managed three doubles over us in 1928/29, 1970/71 and 1994/95. I have since had emails apologising and confirming that they would rectifying things.
  13. Amazon blurb makes it sound like a good read…… Alan Dicks’ football career spanned the second half of the 20th century. During those fifty years the game fundamentally changed and Dicksy was there, playing his part, when history was made. In Chelsea’s first ever League title win in 1955. Double promotion glory alongside Jimmy Hill at Coventry City in the 1960s. Boss at Bristol City for thirteen extraordinary years until 1980. And managing teams around the world. At Ashton Gate, he built a side on a shoestring budget and an indestructible spirit, becoming a national figure. A living legend to Robins’ fans, taking the club up to the top flight after a sixty-five-year wait, it’s part of an amazing football tale of a time when loyalty meant more than money. Football has waited over thirty years to hear his story. Finally, here it is.
