Like a golfer, you can hit the ball just as far with a good, steady swing…the extra yards you get from trying to hit it hard aren’t worth the effort at the expense of accuracy.  Antoine generates more than enough power from “stroking it”…and if he gets back into form, he will realise this.

I've heard that going too long without "stroking it" can result in heightened levels of tension and stress. Somebody get this man a nudie mag

It seems to me that Semenyo’s game is better matched with Martin’s, while Tommy and Nakhi play much better together as a pair.  Both pairs look to be better suited to different opponents.  Tommy and Nakhi seem to play better against good footballing sides who like to play out from the back, but they can get bullied by physical sides.  Martin and Semenyo are better against more physical sides who like to play longer.  Semenyo links well with Martin as a decent target man who links the play, especially with the threat of Weimann running in behind which creates space for him.

I’d use them like that, with Semenyo available also to come in later in games against better ball playing sides to cause problems for tiring defenders.  That way he plays every game pretty much and we maximise his strengths.

I'm not saying you're wrong or disagreeing with you but I don't understand your point. What difference does it make for the strikers if the opposition plays long balls going forward vs slow build up, possession based play? Sorry if this is a dumb question as I am not as tactically astute compared to others on here.

  3. As a neutral, the match was very entertaining but I feel sorry for Jesse Marsch after watching that. Tactically outdid Arteta but has got **** all to show for it. The disallowed Bamford goal should have stood, but his finishing is absolutely shambolic. Luckily for them, we have a certain A Semenyo who may be available for the right price. £20M plus add ons should do the trick ??

  4. I think it is the managers job to put the players in position to have success. It does seem like he's not being used correctly at times; we must find a way to get him matched up 1v1. Since our system can be somewhat narrow at times I think he will find more favorable positions in the half spaces and out by the touch line. Look at all the space JD and Sykes get. I'm not saying play him as a winger or wingback but allow him free reign over both sides of the pitch. Does this sound like it might work or am I out of order here?

Conway has not hit a wall, he simply is not as effective without Wells.

Why has Pearson broken up such a lethal strike force, its an absolute joke.

Semenyo doesn't fit in with the way we play, so don't play him, revert to what worked so well.

After Blackburn away I genuinely thought play offs maybe are realistic with a bit of luck, now Im thinking relegation maybe with Pearson trying to fit Semenyo in, I just don't get it, does he not like Wells?

I haven't forgotten about last season with WSM, which was just as effective as Wells + Conway over a longer period of time. I get why Martin doesn't come on much anymore but I thought todays opponent would possibly have some issues dealing with that combo. I also wonder if Nigel insists on Semenyo would it be possible to include Wells, Conway, Semenyo simultaneously?

Could try pairing him with Wells, don't understand breaking up what was the leagues most dangerous and fruitful strike partnership, a joke!!!!

To be fair I thought Antoine was working hard for the team, he won a team high 12 duels and managed to draw 5 fouls as well. His shooting isn't right yet though, maybe he is better off rotating with Wells at this point.  This Millwall setup is one type of defending he often struggles with. He didn't get much space and thus found it difficult to break them down. Conway was mostly anonymous but I think that's more down to tactics than anything else.

Edit: Sorry, 2nd highest. Atkinson 1st with 14.

  7. Not many Portuguese managers with PL experience out there. Their team construction basically forces them to get a manager to speak Portuguese

Hopefully he can fire us in to the top 6 before the World Cup because if he is not signing a new deal he will be off in January as we must make the maximum profit

If a team comes back in for £10M do you think we take it

Interestingly, Palace has brought in at least one player from the Championship every season since they came back up. They seem to be able to incorporate them properly as well with the recent success of players like Olise and Eze. If Semenyo does go it probably shouldn't be to a Forest or Bournemouth as they will likely not stay up long enough for him to accumulate big bonuses or earn a big transfer fee percentage for us. Palace or West Ham seem to fit the bill, I could also see him having success in a high pressing system like Southampton or Leeds. I honestly feel like he would stand a decent chance of displacing Bamford or Che Adams even.

  10. Before the game I heard some comments that he is useless against teams that sit back and thus should be dropped vs Preston, which I don't necessarily agree with. I thought he was able to find space though and gave them problems, especially in the 2nd half. He just needs a bit more composure in front of goal, which will come with more consistent game time and confidence as we saw last season. He is a joy to watch and I think his attributes point to a future starter in the Premier League, although he will need some time to adjust. His injury this summer while unfortunate has given him more time to develop at this level because were he healthy a big bid may have come in.

Should probably keep the shorts on.

Actually, the shorts make him less aerodynamic -- and thus indirectly contribute to his noted lack of pace. If we want to have success we must be willing to think outside the box. These are the types of questions that these timid reporters need to be asking of NP. Hold his feet to the fire!!

  12. What about this idea that Scott, Semenyo, and Conway are worth a combined £30M? I think if we are willing to let either Scott or Semenyo go for ~10 plus add ons this January they will both be snapped up immediately. I don't see the point of selling Conway as we still don't know how good he is/could be and neither does anybody else.

Another thing I want to know -- does a sell on clause typically only apply to a percentage of the profit from a sale or is it applied to the full amount of the fee?

    Kodjia, Abraham and Reid.

Kodjia created chances for himself and others….the number of crosses from inside the box he put along the 6 yard box would’ve been heaven for Tammy.

Tammy, for his goalscoring but he was deceptively strong back to goal, and would create space for Kodjia.

Reid, for his energy, cleverness…and proved he could score too.

Excellent picks. The hardest choice for me was between Weimann and Kodjia. I think Weimann played out of his mind last season but Kodjia is the more talented player. Semenyo may be a bit of recency bias on my part but I genuinely believe he's as talented as any forward we've had here. I didn't think many people would pick Reid but I'm glad you did -- he's underrated.

  14. Inspired by another recent thread, which I couldn't participate in because it was before my time, I decided to make a thread of my own. If you were building a squad to compete for promotion in the Championship, which 3 of the following forwards would you select, and why?

    2014-15 Sam Baldock

    2015-16 Jonathan Kodjia

    2016-17 Tammy Abraham

    2017-18 Bobby Reid

    2018-19 Famara Diedhiou

    2021-22 Andreas Weimann

    2021-22 Chris Martin

    2021-22 Antoine Semenyo

    2022-23 Tommy Conway

    2022-23 Nahki Wells

I went with Tammy and Antoine up top, as I believe they would compliment each other very well. Tammy with his size and excellent poachers instinct in the box, and Antoine with his ability to create space and beat defenders 1 on 1. The number 10 was a tough decision but I chose Weimann. Who would you pick?
