x3widRacin
The numbers are not the goals scored in the final, but the seasons in the top flight after promoting. The benefits to winning the playoffs are obvious, but I've decided to take a look at all the play-off final results and see what did happen to those two teams that were involved on the day, how many times the winner went straight back down and what happened to the runners up? I also took a look at how many seasons the winner stayed in the top flight immediately after promotion, and how many seasons the runner-up stayed in the top flight if they were promoted in the following two seasons. Considering all the obvious benefits to winning the Playoff Final, the losers have not fared poorly in the long run. Year Winner (Seasons In Top Flight) Runner-Up (Seasons In After Eventual Promotion) 1988 Middlesbrough 1 Chelsea 19 Winner: Relegated the following season and did not return for 3 seasons when they were relegated again. Runner-Up: Won the league title the following season and have remained in the Top Flight ever since, winning it twice, qualifying for Europe 12 times in the process. 1989 Crystal Palace 3 Blackburn 0 Winner: Lost 0-9 to Liverpool as a welcome to the top flight but survived until finally being relegated in 1993. Runner-Up: Made the playoffs 2 of the next 3 seasons before finally being promoted and quickly becoming Premier League Champions 1990 Swindon 0 Sunderland 1 Winner: Never even got promoted due to illegal payments Runner-Up: Promoted despite losing, Relegated next season 1991 Notts County 1 Brighton 0 Winner: Relegated the following season Runner-Up: Relegated from Championship 1992 Blackburn 7 Leicester City 1 Winner: Finished 4th in the Premier League, won it 2 seasons later Runner-Up: Made the playoffs the following two seasons, being promoted on the (third) attempt 1993 Swindon 1 Leicester City 1 Winner: "Pulled a Derby" and had one of the worst seasons in the top flight, never returned Runner-Up: Won the playoff final the following season and bounced down and back again 1994 Leicester City 1 Derby County 6 Winner: Relegated immediately then bounced up again Runner-Up: Promoted automatically two seasons later 1995 Bolton 1 Reading 0 Winner: Last Place, Relegated Runner-Up: Slipped a bit and did not reach the top flight for 10+ seasons 1996 Leicester City 6 Crystal Palace 1 Winner: Survived with a best finish of 8th in 6 seasons Runner-Up: Relegated but made Europe 1997 Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0 Winner: Relegated Runner-Up: Did not Promote or Relegate until reaching top flight 9 seasons later automatically 1998 Charlton 1 Sunderland 3 Winner: Relegated the following season Runner-Up: Won the league with a record amount of points and finished 7th their first two seasons in the top flight 1999 Watford 1 Bolton 0 Winner: Relegated Finishing Bottom Runner-Up: Did not promote the following season, but won the playoffs 2 seasons later and have been in the topflight ever since 2000 Ipswich 2 Barnsley 0 Winner: Finished a strong 5th before being relegated the following season Runner-Up: Slipped to Division 2 for a few seasons 2001 Bolton 7 Preston North End 0 Winner: Survived ever since Runner-Up: Still in the Championship 2002 Birmingham City 4 Norwich City 1 Winner: Stayed in the top flight for 4 seasons with a best finish of 10th Runner-Up: Promoted as champions two seasons later 2003 Wolves 1 Sheffield United 1 Winner: Relegated in last place Runner-Up: Promoted as Runners Up 2 seasons later 2004 Crystal Palace 1 West Ham 4 Winner: Relegated Immediately Runner-Up: Promoted the following season through Playoffs 2005 West Ham 4 Preston North End 0 Winner: Remain in the Top Flight Runner-Up: Still in the Championship 2006 Watford 1 Leeds 0 Winner: Relegated Runner-Up: Financial Stuff we all know 2007 Derby 1 WBA 1+ Winner: Worst Season in top Flight history Runner-Up: Promoted as Champions 2008 Hull City Bristol City

tombcfc
Very interesting, but how can West Ham have been in two consecutive finals, having won the first one? (2004 and 2005) They lost the 1st one to Palace, the 1-4 is the amount of time the clubs have been in the Premier League since then.
Cooter
Very interesting, but how can West Ham have been in two consecutive finals, having won the first one? (2004 and 2005) Argh, no! :noexpression: I knew myself that I read it wrong, as soon as I seen it said "Chelsea - 19" right at the top... The numbers next to the team names, are not the scores in the play off final! They relate to the number of seasons the club has been in the top flight, since that particular game...
