Bristol City Comprehensively Outplayed

Those are the words in the Daily Mail report today (right at the end).

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...ath-Hansen.html

What planet is this guy Neil Ashton on ( n.ashton@dailymail.co.uk ) ?

Surely he should not be allowed to write such inadequacies in a National newspaper?

We all know the game was, at worst, pretty even, separated only by a stupendous strike, and these stats tell a better story than he does:

B.CITY-----------H.CITY

13 Shots On Target 4

8 Shots Off Target 6

16 Fouls (Conceded) 11

2 Corners 1

1 Yellow Cards 1

0 Red Cards 0

"Bristol City were comprehensively outplayed at Wembley, allowing Hull to squeeze past them when Windass scored the best goal the new stadium has seen so far."

So we were 'comprehensively outplayed' yet Hull only managed to 'squeeze past' us to win?

The bloke's an idiot.

Had Hull beaten us 6-0 and had all the play then yes we would have been 'comprehensively outplayed'. We lost 1-0 with about 50% possession - we were not outplayed.

Just emailed him, what a complete idiot. Lazy national journalism again:

Dear Mr Ashton

I can only presume that you did not attend Saturday's playoff final at Wembley, and based your report on "Hull scored, Bristol City didn't".

You state that Bristol City were "comprehensively outplayed" yet the statistics show that they had over three times as many shots on target and an equal amount of posession during the game.

They were undone by one moment of individual brilliance which was the only thing to choose between the two sides for the entire game.

Had they been beaten by a handful of goals, then "comprehensively outplayed" would have been apt.

Whatever they pay you to bash out this drivel is clearly far more than it's worth! It's lazy journalism at it's very best(?) and just once it would be a refreshing change to see a national newspaper give the Championship coverage the same amount of effort that it puts into it's coverage of the Premier League.

I won't hold my breath though.

Where are your stats from? The Mirror gives it as 6-4 on target and 4-9 off target - Sorry, just found them on the BBC. Has the BBC found 7 extra shots on target, or have the Mirror misplaced them?

EDIT - I have also sent the little ar*ewipe an E Mail, keeping it very polite.

Stats are from the Official Site (same on Hull's OS) and also from Sporting Life who take them from the Press Association I think?

Possession 49% vs 51%.

I emailed too saying he either didn't watch the game or he didn't care whether what he wrote was anywhere near the truth.

Didn't the Mail give us a similarly bad write-up after an evening game not too long ago?

Sure it was mentioned on the forum but my search facility here isn't working.

This Guy is know different to the rest, I got the impression from the start that as far as the Newspapers and Sky Sports were

concerned Bristol and Bristol City in particular are a little West Counntry outfit who have No Right to be where we are, and to be

doing what we have done. WELL WE ARE HERE, SO GET USED TO IT AND GIVE US THE RESPECT WE DESERVE.

there i feel alot better now. :city:

EDIT - I have also sent the little ar*ewipe an E Mail, keeping it very polite.

My email was, err, slightly less polite:

Dear Sir,

I have a query.

Do you even bother to watch the matches you report on or do you just write it based on the scoreline?! Do you even care about 'lower league football?

These were the stats from Saturday's Championship Play-Off Final:

Bristol City----Hull City

13 Shots On Target 4

8 Shots Off Target 6

16 Fouls (Conceded) 11

2 Corners 1

1 Yellow Cards 1

0 Red Cards 0

Doesn't that suggest to you that Bristol City had slightly more of the play!? And that aside from the fact they didn't get the ball in the net, they played the better football?

As I remember, Hull's goal was scored during one brief counter attack and can hardly be described as 'comprehensively outplaying' Bristol City.

And do you seriously believe that Dean Windass scored THE best goal that has been seen at the new Wembley!?! What planet are you on?

What poor, lazy journalism. Still, it's only to be expected from a Daily Mail journalist, I suppose.

Regards.

Wow, a reply from the man himself! My message to him

Sorry Mr Ashton, your lazy journalism does not do justice to Bristol City,

nor to the reputation of the Daily Mail. All Bristol City fans are very

proud of what we have achieved this year, and on Saturday, we matched Hull,

only losing to a fantastic goal. City gave it a good go, battered Hull for

much of the second half, but did not get the break that we needed. Even

the match stats don't back up your claim, and whilst actual numbers vary

from source to source, we had more shots on target than Hull. Beaten, yes,

but most definitely not 'Comprehensively Outplayed'.

I hope that you have the decency to print an apology, as I suspect that you

may get a large number of E Mails from irate City fans, and I suspect that

Hull fans would fully agree with us as well.

And his reply -

Hi John

Thanks for your rather charming email.

Of course I was at the game and I can understand your frustration. My own

team has been beaten in a play off final before and it hurts like hell -

you will get over it, in time.

Remind me, just how busy was Boaz Myhill? I don't recall him making a

single save.

Still, at least your manager accepted defeat with good grace.

There will be no apology from me. Perhaps there should be an apology for

that performance.

Kind regards

Your friend

Neil

And I will remind him how busy Boaz Myhill was!

Hang on,

If he is asking us if Myhill made any saves thats ludacris, there were 13 shots on target so he must of had to save 13 shots that were on goal. May sound obvious but it must escape these idiots who write about Championship football.

Funny that, my email received from him was almost identical! Seems like the 'poor' chap has had some work to do this morning...

I don't understand what he meant by 'Perhaps there should be an apology for that performance'. What is he talking about?! We were the better team.

Utter b***ocks, outplayed, utter, utter b***ocks. He must have been watching a different game to the rest of us. Why was the big screen showing Windyarse looking very worried on the bench once he'd come off?
