Eddie Hitler
This was on BBC4 tonight but I'm sure they'll repeat it: Storyville: The Father, the Son and the Housekeeper Father Michael Cleary was the unlikely superstar of the Irish Catholic Church. However, a year after his death, a shocking secret emerged. Tonight 9pm I was a big fan of Father Ted but having seen this Linehan & Matthews did sod all as it was all already there. Father Michael Cleary had two number one albums, topped the bill at the Sydney Opera House, owned a racehorse, had his own nightly radio show after which he went gambling, and lived with his housekeeper and their (illegitimate) son. His bishop, who introduced him at the Pope's vist, had a child in the US and he stole church funds to pay maintenance. When this came out Cleary was really pissed off as the bishop had been lecturing him for years about his own son. Half the characters could have gone straight into Father Ted and worked. The actual programme was a bit dull but stick with it as the world it revealed was like a parallel universe. Ireland was a very different world in the 1970s and 80s.
