It doesn't make any difference to the players who take up the number, but the player who loses his number would be really annoyed and it would just create bad feelings in the squad. For example, imagine how Davie Noble would feel if they gave his number 8 shirt to Gavin Williams, he'd feel unwanted and betrayed; and so may want to leave the club for something as petty as a shirt number.
