Philip Belgrave
The Australian national soccer side, the Socceroos, has kicked off the final stage of its World Cup qualifying campaign with a win, defeating Uzbekistan one-nil in Tashkent. Scott Chipperfield scored the winning goal off a Luke Wilkshire cross in the 27th minute. Chipperfield said that winning away from home has provided a boost to Australia's chances of qualifying. "Yeah, it is a great start away from home to get three points," Chipperfield said. "You target to win your home games and pick up points on the road. "So to get three points today it's a great bonus for us and a difficult situation for Uzbekistan now, two losses, so next game is Qatar, if we get a win there then we're in good shape to qualify." Australia's opponent in the next qualifying match, Qatar, has played out a one-all draw in its qualifier against Bahrain.
