Funny Thing Happend At Sunderland

I went to Fulham on the weekend and sat in the away end with my mate who is a Mackem.

Wierdly, Jimmy Hill was spotted in the corner....cue 4000 fans screamng abuse and trying to get to 'the chin'. The poor old duffer had to have a police escort away from the ground for his own safety.

I asked my mate why such vitriol? He explained that it was due to the last game of the season, way back....Jimmy Hill ensured that Coventry's last game against another team facing the drop was put back because of 'crowd issues' until after the Sunderland game had finished...Sunderland lost and both teams knew that a bore draw was enough for both to survive.

I had a lovely warm glow knowing I was the only person out of 4000 giving Chinny a standing ovation.

Jimmy Hill...Ledge!

A ledge indeed remember it well, and the 'defensive' approach of both teams once Sunderlands dicking (3-0 at Everton?) was made known.

Of course those warm hearted Wearsiders would never have done such a thing themselves would they..

I didn't even notice on the night - far too busy celebrating City's great comeback for the last ten minutes.

City fans were balancing on top of crush barriers in the open end at Highfield Road looking skywards, arms outstretched with tears streaming down their faces.

We could see that City and Coventry fans in the divided covered end opposite us had stopped their almost continual aggravation ( there were almost 40 arrests that night) and both sets of fans were celebrating, but for the 10,000 plus City fans at our end it was just unbelievable emotional bedlam after the equaliser.

At the end both sets of fans charged onto the pitch but it was the massed ranks of City fans who swamped the home fans and the BCFC players who took a bow in the Coventry directors box.
