Barrs Court Red
Yes, as pointed out to me by Tompo. Very dissapointed and yet another pub gone I have fond memories of. (Far more than the Wedlocks it has to be said).

Guest
Someone will regret that when/if we move to Ashton Vale.. it would then become the nearest pub and a probable gold mine!
Fodbarmyarmy
Someone will regret that when/if we move to Ashton Vale.. it would then become the nearest pub and a probable gold mine! The place closed because it was only busy one day every two weeks (on average) New ground would not change that I expect there will be at least one new shiny "conservatory" type pub built in the whole scheme of the development not to mention the bars in the new ground itself so probably would not make a difference anyway Still a shame though.....had many a pre match sing song in the Ship pre Liverpool in the cup being one that particularly springs to mind plus drinking Champers outside after the Rotherham game.. Whites
Gutted to hear this, Had some memorable times in the Famous Ship and Castle!!! Especially with the Sunday football side. , and of all the times i have seen the Wurzels, this was the best place/atmosphere i have ever seen them (the first time they played there). The place was closed due to fire after a a recent renovation and the Brewery refusing to sell it to anybody wanting to run it as pub the same as the Wedlocks. Sadly this responsible brewery are doing the same all over Britain. Britsish pub guide - Update 21 July 2008. The pub is closed and boarded up. It has suffered some fire damage and is being sold by Enterprise Inns with a covenant that means it can never be reopened as a pub! Britishpubguide.com abhors Enterprise Inns policy of selling pubs with covenants meaning they cannot be pubs ever again. This is Enterprise Inns riding roughshod over local communities and our nation's heritage in search of 'shareholder value'. We would urge all Britishpubguide.com users not to reward Enterprise Inns with their custom.
Guest DanC
Still find it interesting that the last time it was open there was trouble in there( V Stoke)
Elton red
Still find it interesting that the last time it was open there was trouble in there( V Stoke) That wasnt 'trouble' Dan, that was some absolute a**holes stood at the back of the forecourt who lobbed a couple of bottles at the Stoke 'Jerseys' being escorted back to their buses. Disgraceful, I was embarrassed and ashamed.
cider head
Someone will regret that when/if we move to Ashton Vale.. it would then become the nearest pub and a probable gold mine! nearest standing pub is now the robins but there will be pubs built near the new ground plus houses etc.
norwichrobin
nearest standing pub is now the robins but there will be pubs built near the new ground plus houses etc. new ground sounds fun, massive car park as we will all have to drive and cant have a beer anyway (Doncaster, home fans only). full of people carriers and corporates, with the working class thumbing a lift back to town (like covs ground). with beyonce blearing out over empty seats as all we all sing a song we heard the week before on the champions league programme. progress yes i agree but I'm getting old, really looking forward to getting non league /lower division, opposition away or wrexham away tuesday night few beers before the game freezing cold city win, heaven, going to get abuse for this but the new ground will be bristol city in name only the footballing experience we all love and lets face it thats why were on this forum will go. shame these pubs are going but does the average footy fan have a pint before a game now the souls gone out of football, wheres me prawn sandwich ? cider head
In case you can't get down there! The police will love this as thats where they put the away coaches (behind the pub) and will no longer have to escort away fans past that pub full of city. Uxbridge Red
In case you can't get down there! A tragic site to see. I have fond memories of pre-match drinks in the lounge (right side?) at the Ship, and then waiting for the traffic to die down in there watching the results. I have to agree though, being busy once a fortnight is no way to survive nowadays. RIP Ship & Castle!!!
WhistleHappy
In case you can't get down there! Blimey :noexpression: the times they really are a changing as wtfigo said... always sad to see any pub go, its all happening a bit too fast for my liking... Big Lump In The Throat Time - a sudden realisation that it wont be too long before we see similar images coming from among the debris of ... gulp, ASHTON GATE itself... sigh, it's all a bit much right now after just reading some of the posts and watching CH's youtube vid in the AG memories thread... OK we gotta move on & we're looking forward, but sometimes looking back at what we had in our youth is hard to bear.. thanks for the memories. Sad the young un's nowadays will never know what they missed down at the Gate & elsewhere (& all the real emotion that went with it) back in the day when football really was football & not the sanitised media hyped entertainment show that its become. Christ I'm getting all emotional now... sad old git tear to the eye, would'nt you just love to be able to go back once more to launch a bog roll into the air towards Gibbo's goal mouth from the East End of yesteryear? cider head
Christ I'm getting all emotional now... sad old git tear to the eye, would'nt you just love to be able to go back once more to launch a bog roll into the air towards Gibbo's goal mouth from the East End of yesteryear? maybe not at gibbo but at basso!! there is a streamer / bog roll launch planned for crystal palace at home, a chance to do it one last time.. While we have people who keep our memories and traditions alive Bristol city will always be there for us no matter where we play, but we need to mix the past with the future in a way liverpool do and it will be very emotional seeing the gate gone but as equally emotional seeing a john atyeo statue standing tall and proud infront of a new stadium, to be fair the only stand that has stayed the same over the years is the eastend (apart from the seats) and ashton gate has gone through many face lifts where really 2 stands were rebuilt and one new stand over terrace, some will remember ashton gate in many forms and faces but it has changed a lot and we do need to move foward with the rest of the clubs around us.
