Free Kicks And Corners

I cannot remember the last time we scored direct from a free kick (like the Wendesday goal today) or from a corner with a conventional header. Yet we regularly concede from these situations. If the situation was reversed we would be in the playoffs. - yes it's that simple! In the last few games alone against Forest, Preston, Swansea, Ipswich and Wedensday we have lost ten points from our inability to defend set plays (particularly in the last few minutes) , yet if we get a corner/ free kick/penalty we all know we will not score. It's a "result" if one of our corners beats the first defender or is not offside. Don't we have a coach for "set play" situations? Other teams score from these situations so why don't we?

Because the players taking the direct free kicks do not possess the required quality and/or practice enough to perfect these situations.

Am I right in thinking we've got a goalkeeping coach and defensive coach, but no attacking one? If so, I reckon that should be our first signing ready for next season, because we really are clueless from set pieces and we all know how predictable our attacking play usually is.

It's amazing we've finished as high as we have, considering our lack of ideas in forward play and it just emphasises how much we owe our defence and battling midfielders like ME and CS.

If we can sort that out next year, we could be a real force.

Strange, since we seem able to compete with most teams until it comes to corners and free kicks. I think it's down to coaching. For example, if we have a free kick twenty yards out who is our specialist dead ball expert?

Johnson and McIndoe seem to take the free kicks. And neither has scored with one this season if my memory serves me correctly.

Exactly. Maynard is talented with a powerful shot so why is he not coached as our free kick/ penalty taker? I know he missed a penalty against Portsmouth but even Ronaldo misses the odd penalty.

Interesting point. Could be because his job at free kicks is seen as picking up rebounds/defections etc in the box.

Ive posted before i reckon maynard should have a go. He clearly has the most powerful shot on him so a bit of training accross the summer should be enough to get him on target
