I posted on 606 to ask the locals and the general consensus is Heworth metro station in Gateshead (about £2 all day to park I think) and then metro direct to St. James for about £3 return I think. Yes, that's what I'm going to do - it's just at the end of the M'way and just a few stops into the city judging by the map.
