Intimidating/scary Away Pubs

On the FA CUP Ball 8 Thread someone hopes for Aldershot Away

That reopened an old memory - many many moons ago - when the Ground was in some old Park - one of the scariest Pubs I ever went into at an away ground was at Aldershot - the Army Boys and Gurkhas supporting the Shots were hard as Nails and although fighting never occurred we supped our beers and got out asap - it was a bit like one of those films you watch when you see someone walk into a strange town (The Jam - used to love em) and you know it is going to turn out nasty

For sheer intimidation and lurking malevolent presence this was the scariest Pub I ever went into - anyone else got memories of such places at other grounds?

And the Paras still use the Pegasus :englandsmile4wf:

The place has a strange ambience about it these days though when compared to past......too many missing friends I guess :disapointed2se:

Admitedly a scary bunch of guys but there is nothing to be afraid of ...........unless of course you are wearing a provo T Shirt or a backpack or a Navy uniform! :noexpression:

As for scary pubs.....I remember going in the Roker at Sunderland at around 10.00am one year we played them and it was already well stocked with Mackems - that was hairy

Also the Boleyn.......thats quite a nervous pint of Cider to order before a game I can tell e.....

Scariest for me was not whilst watching City but England away. Got the train up to Glasgow for the Scotland England play off game, got there on the Friday night, thought we would have a pint in the station before heading to the hotel and on asking for 3 ciders the rather large bloke at the bar next to me said in a very strong Glasgow accent "You can have that drink then on your way, your not welcome here".

Needless to say we didn't take long to neck our drinks and they sang stand up if you hate the English most of the time we were in there! Luckily we found a pub run by a Irish bloke who couldn't care less about the scottish team and spent the weekend in there!

Not the friendliest race, are they!

Scariest pub for me - Stockport away, not got a clue the name of it. Went up there for the rearranged Cup game after the first game was called off on the Saturday morning. 13 of us (never a good number!), walked in, and they clicked we were City. The landlord said it was no problem us being in there, but a QPR fan got shot in there in the 3rd round, so it was up to us. Funnily enough we didn't bother with that one!

Thats quite funny!! Interestingly (I think) it is some of these less glamorous Teams that have these Pubs - I can remember a few Pubs where there was nearly always a bit of a ruck (not condoning it) like at QPR, Forest the old Leicester - but they just did not have that edge of "Lets get out of here this is Deliverance Country)!

I remember that pub very well. We stayed in there for a beer and a few glasses went flying. Ended up at an off-licence and bought some cans.

Ah! The Boleyn Arms, Upton Park, before an evening game, early nineties!

No way can you disguise a Bristol accent in east London :bruce_h4h:

At the last Cardiff away game I was at a pub and when we all left were walked into the middle of about 2000 Cardiff fans get escorted by the police with them shouting things like "kill the English", we quickly darted for to the front told the police we were city fans and they let us run across the police divide to join up with the rest of the City fans. That was pretty scary! While not a pub story as such...

It was me who wants Aldershot away.

Aldershot is a different town now since the parras have left, its full of medics and chefs so no trouble these days apart from some gobby chavs and pissed up squaddies still in training.

I dont think thats the case at all...

Read this thread here for the full horrors of what still happens in Aldershot. Nasty little town and some really horrible fans.

Quite Grim - to be fair the Pub we were in (which seems like it must have been the Pegasus) knew were City but they kind of took the view there were 3 of us and loads of them so why bother - just made it clear we were not welcome - I can't remember any real trouble between ours and theirs it was just the ambiance of the place at that time! I can also remember a grim place near the old Stoke Ground - good beer but not the friendiest place -

(best beer I ever had at an away game was actually at some pub called the Cartwheel or something near Man City - it might have been an Adnam's or something but a great pint - and some superb Jennings at Carlisle!)

What happened to those Bournemouth fans was disgusting. But unfortunatly every club up and down the country (including ours) has its element of dick head fans, mainly youth 14-22 who belive that are part of an underground firm reminisent of the 80's firms. these people have no place in todays game and they must be made known to the relevent authorities. However what happens out of the ground cannot be directly attiributed to the club and unfortunatly if one club has a few more tXXts than another club that club and town will be branded with the sh*t brush.
