Coppell Transfer History At Reading

Kingswood Village

Recommended Posts

I was chatting with a work mate the other day who happens to be a season ticket holder at Reading. We got to talking about our new gaffer and he said that where Coppell really excells is in the transfer market. He then went and worked out all the transfers in and out while Coppell was manager of Reading FC. It makes some pretty interesting reading - not least the amount of players aquired from his previous clubs. Anyway - for what its worth - here is the list of transfers (my mate is at pains to point out that there maybe 1 or 2 factual inaccuracies but believes it in the main to be correct).

Cheers

Now you can see how little he likes spending, so talk of all these big signings coming your way is a wide of the mark. And the one he did sign for the most Matejovsky, Halford and Fae have also been flops - Halford and Fae hardly played a game between them.

Made a profit of £1m on Halford. Matejovsky has been one of best players in the championship this season. I don't understand where some people get their opinions from?!

I think I am more qualified to make opinions on Reading players that a Bristol City fan who doesn't knows his facts or research his answers before responding.

We did not make that much profit on Halford, but we did recoup our money plus a small profit. But he was a flop in playing terms making only 3 appearances and being described as one of the poorest "trainers" they had ever seen at the club.

As for Matejovsky, I can only assume you are confusing him with Majewski at Forest because Matejovsky has only had 15starts and 2 subs appearances this season. In fact he has only 34 league starts since joining us 2 and a half years ago.

Would it be fair to say that your relegation from the Premier League was at least partly down to Coppell's refusal (or inability) to add to the squad?

It's not an issue for me if it was, because his record at this level is second to none and I'd rather have a manager who is reluctant to make signings than one who spends wildly (see Hull, who will be returning to the Championship in a quite dreadful state).

Hi Wycombe Royal

many thanks for your comments and also hats off to OP for the time to get this together.

Looks very much like we can expect Coppel to do most of his best work under 1million which is good news for us as our excellent chairman Steve lansdown has gone on for ages about wanting to run the club prudently as a business.

couple of questions for you Wycombe Royal if you wouldnt mind answering

a) is Coppel heavily responsible fpor picking these players out or do you have some kind of dream scouting team? ie who set up this link with Cork City that seems to have been very beneficial

b) His use of loan players at face value seems to have brought him less succes (not many names on that list that have gon onto much), did he use the loan market more as a last resort ot short term fix or was he happy to bring in season long loans etc

c) which players of Reading (past and present) who played under Coppel do you think could hack it at this level for us, might be in our range/available, and would be potentially interested? any names that spring to mind

cheers

Most definately. He wanted to reward the squad for their 8th place finish and give them the chance to prove it wasn't a one off.We had the chance to sign Matty Taylor, Gary Cahill and Gary O'Neill but Coppell decided they weren't better than what we already had. We lost Glen Little to injury which left us with John Oster as our only right winger and the rest is hitsory.

Coppell did not do the initial scouting. Brian McDermott was chief scout and he did all the legwork with the assistance of Nicky Hammond (who he reported to). McD was the one doing all the miles watching lots of players and taking in foreign trips. The link with Cork City came from Eamonn Dolan (our academy director) who's twin brother Pat used to manage Cork. He notified his brother of the player called Kevin Doyle and Coppell only went to watch him after McD and Hammond had scouted him. Coppell was also a bit drunk and can't remember much of his trip to Ireland (according to Stuart Roach's book).

Coppell never identified the players he just looked at ones suggested to him by the scouting team.

b) His use of loan players at face value seems to have brought him less succes (not many names on that list that have gon onto much), did he use the loan market more as a last resort ot short term fix or was he happy to bring in season long loans etc

He doesn't like bringing in loan players and that can be seen from his transfer record. He doesn't agree with the loan system and therefore doesn't like using it.

c) which players of Reading (past and present) who played under Coppel do you think could hack it at this level for us, might be in our range/available, and would be potentially interested? any names that spring to mind

Ivar Ingimarsson - is the obvious one. Doesn't want the pay as you play deal we are offering and will porbably be leaving. Vastly experienced but getting very slow now. He has played for Coppell as Brentford, Brighton and Reading.

Dave Kitson - he will be interested in him but may not be able to afford or entice him to Ashton Gate. His injury problems prohibit a large fee being spent on him and Coppell knows all about his fitness issues.

Ibrahima Sonko - he had a falling out with Coppell before he was sold (he was suspended for a period after saying he didn't want to play for the reserves) so I'm not sure what their relationship is like. However he was never the same player after his serious knee injury and has played well for a long time. I wouldn't want him back at my club.

Kalifa Cisse - doesn't reallyhave a best position and I would think we will listen to offers. He is an OK centre back and an OK central midfielder and will be on decent wages. We wouldn't stand in his way if Coppell came knocking.

Greg Halford - will probably be available but I can't see him touching him with a barge pole.

Andre Bikey - not sure what his situation is at Burnley as he doesn't start many games. However Bikey left us because he wanted to play in the Premier League so I doubt he would be looking to move to another Championship club. Plus wages might be an issue.

Shane Long - again we wouldprobably listen to offers although McD does like him. Not had the best of seasons but is still fairly young. Hewasn't Coppell's preferred striker so I don't know if he would want him.

Stephen Hunt - Coppell's love child. Had him at Palace and Brentford and saved him from signing for Bradford as he got off a plane at Leeds/Bradford airport by offering him a contract at Reading. He will leave Hull to the highest bidder which I doubt will be a Championship team.

James Harper - out of contract at Sheffield Utd and he loves Steve Coppell. Won't be cheap on the wages front but I'd be surprised if he wasn't interested in him.

Liam Rosenior - out of contract with us this summer but I don't know how they got on together.

Glen Little - may be too old now but the two love each other and he is out of contract. One of the best players I have EVER seen play for Reading.

Can't think of any more at the moment.

brilliant WR cheers for that

of all the ones youmentioned there i think Ingirmarson fits the bill the best, although he might be getting abit slow we need a commanding centreback who can lead a back four. We have fontaine to play next to him who is relatively nippy for a CB so could prob cover.

Hunt and Kitson would be great but prob both a bit our of our range.

if Glenn Little is fit and out of contract at sheff utd he might be a cheap option for our right wing, but at 34 that would have to be very short term fix

That's Ok; we don't have a drinking culture at AG anymore :innocent06:

He doesn't like bringing in loan players and that can be seen from his transfer record. He doesn't agree with the loan system and therefore doesn't like using it.

That's OK; we don't like Angry Man or Lazy John type players either.

Ivar Ingimarsson - is the obvious one. Doesn't want the pay as you play deal we are offering and will porbably be leaving. Vastly experienced but getting very slow now.

That's OK; we've got Louis already.

If SC relies heavily on scouts:

(1) Do we still have a chief scout since GJ's departure?

(2) Does anyone think PJ is going to find us the 'rough diamonds' to get us promotion?

This has been my chief concern since the SC unveiling. The scouting situation is of paramount importance in terms if identifying new players. I'd love to know if PJ and network is still with us (or has departed to start the Johnson clan at Peterboro' which in time I think he will). Who will fill the void though is anyone's guess. I've no doubt SC can take us forward himself but without a quality scouting network in place, he may not fulfill the full potential. I think WR said SC doesn't have an entourage so it'll be very interesting to see what unfolds.

Oh, and as I've not been overly impressed with many of PJ's identified players, my answer to your second question is "no". Let's start with a clean slate please.

important question indeed

cheers to WR for clarifying the scoutiong position as i thought it would be a bit much to expect coppel to have picked all these players out himself

hopefully we can get a scout in of his choice so he can unearth some more diamonds

Well, looks like we best be hoping Reading lose their first 8 matches of next season, McDermott gets sacked and joins Coppell at City as chief scout!!!!

Can't think Pete Johnson will be with us for long - surely a conflict of interests there now.
